3 List Designer Designing Lists This topic contains the following information: Overview Designing Lists List Designer Window See Also Overview This portlet application allows administrators to design lists to be displayed in the List Viewer portlet application. The List Viewer displays information in a table format. The information can be in the form of text, numbers, gauges, alarms, or line graphs. You can create two kinds of lists, detail or group. In detail lists, each row displays information for a single host or target. In group lists, each row displays aggregated information for a group of systems. When creating group lists, you specify a drilldown list for each group. Typically, the drilldown list contains the data for the individual hosts or targets that make up the group. When viewing the list in the List Viewer, you can double-click the row of a group to display the specified drilldown list. When you create a new list, by default it is a detail list. To create a group list, add groups to the list. If you do not have the List Designer permission set in the Access Control List (ACL), you will see a "Permission Denied" message when you try to run the List Designer portlet application. Designing Lists To create a list to be displayed in the List Viewer application: 1. Click the New View icon. 2. From the Rows As pull down, select Hosts or Targets. 3. In the filter pane, enter filter criteria for the host or target list if desired. 4. Click Apply. 5. To create a Group list: a. Click Add Group. b. Enter the appropriate information in the Add Group pane. c. Click Apply. d. Repeat these steps to add as many groups as you want to display in the list. 6. Click Add Column. 7. Select a QoS measurement and Host. 8. In the Data Format (bottom right) pane, select the data format for the column from the Display as pull down. 9. Enter information for the column type you selected. For information about specific fields, see Add Column Panes. 10. Click Apply. 11. Continue adding as many columns as you want. To change the order of the columns drag the column headers. 1

4 UMP List Designerl Online Help 12. Click the Save icon. 13. Select the directory location where you want to save the list and enter a name for the list. To save the list in a subdirectory, enter a directory structure such as servers/disk_usage/latest_list. This creates the subdirectories servers and disk_usage and the list named latest_list. 14. Choose whether to save the list as a public, account, or private list from the Access type pull down. 15. Click Save. 16. Click Edit to design the drilldown list (if you are designing a group list) or parent groups (if you are designing a detail list). List Designer Window Add Column button Remove Column button Refresh icon Displays the Add Column panes, where you can define a column for a list. Removes the selected column from the table. Updates the data displayed in the table. New view Open view icon Clears all fields or resets them to the defaults. Edit the settings to create a new list, then click the Save view ( ) or Save view as ( ) icon. Opens the Open View dialog, where you can select an existing list. 2

Public lists can be viewed by all users. Private lists can be viewed only by you. You can also use the Save View dialog to delete lists. Displays the online help for the List Designer. Drag the column headers to change the order of the columns. Enter a name for the column you are defining. Select whether the data is to be displayed for the hosts (the systems doing the monitoring) or the targets (the endpoints of a test). For example, for disk usage choose Hosts to see information about the systems where Nimsoft Monitoring System (NMS) is installed. For a URL test choose Targets to see information about the destination of the URL test. Displays the Add Group pane, where you can create a group. A group displays aggregated data for a defined set of hosts or targets, rather than data for each individual host or target. Updates the table display with your changes. Enter the name of the list that you want to be a parent to the one you are creating. Or, click the Find Parent icon ( ) to the right of this field to select the name of an existing list. Enter the name of the group that you want to be a parent to the one you are creating. Or, click the Find Group icon ( ) to the right of this field to select the name of an existing group. Select this check box to keep the members of the list you are creating and the parent group synchronized. Toggles between the parent and child lists so you can make edits. Deletes the current group. Filter pane Use these fields to display only specified hosts or targets in the list. For example, you can filter for only hosts monitoring a certain QoS measurement, or for all hosts or targets on a specified hub. not button - Click to display all items except the specified items. Source pull down - Select the item you want to filter for. starts with pull down - Select the operator (starts with, ends with, contains, or is) you want to use for the filter Text box - Enter the text you want to filter on. 3

This icon is visible if you have more than one row of filter options. Add Column Panes QoS panel Host or Target panel Select the QoS measurement you want to display in the column. Select a host or target for the QoS measurement. This list is populated once you select a QoS measurement. If for the QoS measurement you selected the host name is part of the target, you see $HOST at the top of the host list. This variable allows you to create a single column for the data. Otherwise, because the host name is part of the target, you would have to create a new column for each system. Usually if the $HOST option is present you will want to use it. Data Format pane Use the fields in this pane to define the data to be displayed in the column. The fields and buttons in this pane change depending on the data format 4

If you choose Last, the last measurement is used and the time period is not relevant. If you choose a method other than Last, the Time Period fields are activated. Time Period combo box and pull down Select the number and units for the interval you want to see data for. Show Units check box Click to display the unit of the measurement, such as percent or second, in the column. 5

Updates the table display with the changes you made. Enter a name for the column. Click the color box to open a palette where you can select a color for the graph items. Choose the type of graph, Line or Column. Select the number and units for the interval you want to see data for. 6

Updates the table display with the changes you made. Enter a name for the column. Enter threshold values for the color display in the gauge: All values up to Warn are green All values between Warn and Critical are yellow All values between Critical and Max are red Find Max Value icon Finds the maximum value to date for the selected QoS measurement. Click the icon, then click Apply. Aggregation pull down Choose the method you want to use to aggregate the data. If you choose Last, the last measurement is used and the time period is not relevant. If you choose a method other than Last, the Time Period fields are activated. Time Period combo box and pull down Select the number and units for the interval you want to see data for. 7

Enter a name for the column. Enter the name of the subsystem for the alarm. Enter the name of the probe issuing the alarm. Enter any text you want to identify the alarm. Status Data Format Pane Display as pull down Select the data format for the column. 8

Aggregation pull down Choose the method you want to use to aggregate the data. If you choose Last, the last measurement is used and the time period is not relevant. If you choose a method other than Last, the Time Period fields are activated. Time Period combo box and pull down Thresholds fields Select the number and units for the interval you want to see data for. Use these fields to assign a status to a specified range of values. You can add more rows to create a series of status levels. In the From and To fields, enter a range of values for the status. Or, leave the From field blank to include all values up to the value in the To field. In the status icon pull down, choose a color icon for the status. In the Text field, enter the text to be displayed for data that falls in the specified range. For example, you could create a series of statuses that display the words low, medium, high, severe, and critical. To add more rows, click the add row icon ( ) to the right of the Text field. Source Data Format Pane The Source data format displays the system associated with the target for the QoS measurement. This can be useful if you are viewing QoS measurements by target. For example, if the target you are monitoring is disk space on the C drive, the Source column tells you which system the C drive is on. Display as pull down Apply button Column Header field Select the data format for the column. Updates the table display with the changes you made. Enter a name for the column. 9

Enter a directory structure before the list name to create subdirectories. For example, servers/disk_usage/latest_list creates the subdirectories servers and disk_usage and the list named latest_list. Choose the type of access for the list: public - Can be viewed by all users. account - Can be viewed only by users of the account you are logged in as. private - Can be viewed only by you. Deletes the list that is selected in the directory tree. Saves the list. Closes the dialog without saving the list. Add Group Pane Name field Drilldown field Enter a name for the group. The name must be unique within each list. Specify a Drilldown list for each group. When viewing the list in the List Viewer, the user can double-click the row of a group to display the specified Drilldown list. The Drilldown list can be any list, but typically it contains data for the individual systems that make up the group. Enter the name of a list, or click the Find view icon ( field to select the list from a. ) to the right of this Sync check box Edit button Remove group icon Select this check box to keep the members of the group you are creating and the associated Drilldown list synchronized. If you change the systems that belong to the group in this list, for example, those changes are also made in the Drilldown list. Toggles between the parent and child lists so you can make edits.
