Quick Setup Guide 2 Thin Clients Quick Installation BEFORE YOU BEGIN Before connecting your IGEL terminal, please check whether the following peripheral devices and services are actually available: 1x VESA standard monitor with VGA, DVI or DisplayPort connection 1x keyboard, PS/2 or USB 1x mouse, PS/2 or USB 1x 10/100/1000 Ethernet network connection (UTP = Unshielded Twisted Pair) 1x network (LAN) 1x network socket 1x power strip with voltage overload protection (not required but recommended) INSTRUCTION MANUALS AND HANDBOOKS This quick setup guide will introduce you to the numerous functions of IGEL thin clients and help you to quickly complete the installation. For more detailed information, download the appropriate IGEL User Guide from: REMARKS ON KEYBOARDS AND MOUSES Your IGEL terminal is equipped to connect a keyboard (USB or PS/2) and a mouse (USB). REMARKS ON MONITORS You can connect to a VGA display via the enclosed DVI-VGA adaptor. REMARKS ON THE ETHERNET NETWORK Your IGEL terminal comes equipped with a 10/100/100 UTP autosensing port for ethernet network connections (modelspecifi c). If needed, you can set the transfer rate in the expanded network setup of your IGEL terminal to 10, 100 or 1000 Mb/s. REMARKS ON THE POWER SUPPLY Your IGEL terminal is equipped with an auto switching power supply that detects the incoming line voltage therefore it can be operated on all power sources with voltages of 100V to 250V and frequencies of 50Hz to 60Hz. It is highly recommended that you connect your IGEL terminal to a power strip with voltage overload protection! REMARKS ON THE DHCP Your IGEL terminal is confi gured as a standard setting for the use of the Dynamic Host Confi guration Protocol. This also requires that your network have a DHCP server. The DHCP Service will then confi gure all network addresses required by your IGEL terminal. If the DHCP is not used, then you will have to ask your network administrator for some information: local IP address of the terminal to be set up, such as , local subnetwork mask, such as local name server address, such as (optional) local gateway address, such as (optional)
Quick Setup Guide Linux STEP 1: UNPACK THE TERMINALS Your terminal is delivered in reusable packaging. If you own numerous IGEL terminals or have a demo product we recommend that you retain the packaging, with regard to any possible returns to your suppliers or for the purpose of an exchange under warranty. When unpacking, please keep in mind that staples or other sharp objects may cause injury. 3 Check the packing list to make sure that you have all necessary components. STEP 2: MAKING CONNECTIONS Connection cables of computer components and peripheral units not equipped with a USB interface, must not be connected while the units are under PLEASE NOTE! power. Hot plugging to non-usb units can lead to serious damage to your equipment! Please bolt together the terminal and its base for upright operation. The terminal s On/Off button is on the right front when the terminal is set up horizontally. To operate the terminal recumbently please stick on the optional rubber feet on the bottom (board) side of the terminal. Take care of adequate ventilation of the terminal. Connect the UTP ethernet network cable to the ethernet jack of your terminal. Do not connect any other type of cable (such as a telephone cable) to this jack, as this could cause serious damage. Proceed carefully when connecting the monitor cable to the video output jack to avoid bending contact pins. The use of screws to secure the video plug to the terminal is recommended. First connect the power cable to the terminal and then to a multiple socket with overload protection. STEP 3: START UP TERMINAL If your network is confi gured for the use of the DHCP, then no changes are required. The boot procedure will last for only a few seconds and during this time the IGEL startup image is displayed along with a progress bar. During the course of the boot procedure, a series of services and settings is initiated, also including the network confi guration.
Quick Setup Guide Linux 4 STEP 4: SETTING OF SOME BASIC OPTIONS PLEASE NOTE! At this point we recommend to install the IGEL Universal Management Suite. You will fi nd it on our website ( Using the Universal Management Suite allows you to confi gure, manage and update an unlimited number of IGEL thin clients. If the default parameters satisfy your requirements, you can skip sections 4 to 9 and continue with STEP 10: OPEN SESSION. After the conclusion of the boot procedure, the usual desktop appears with the IGEL task bar. The standard screen resolution is set automatically. As a result, compatibility with virtually all monitors is ensured during the initial confi guration. On your desktop, a program called an Application Launcher is started. From this program (open sessions), you can also start the IGEL setup application (confi guration program). The IGEL setup application allows you to locally confi gure all terminal functionalities. Please pay particular attention to the sections System, User Interface and Network. STEP 5: LANGUAGE SETTINGS (USER INTERFACE > LANGUAGE) Select the language and keyboard layout you would like here. STEP 6: SETTING OF THE INPUT EQUIPMENT (USER INTERFACE > INPUT) The set up pages allow you to confi gure your keyboard and mouse. If you own a special keyboard or would like to set your mouse for left-hand use, then this is done here. STEP 7: SETTING OF THE DISPLAY PARAMETERS (USER INTERFACE > DISPLAY) Before selecting a higher resolution or refresh rate, make sure that this is also supported by your monitor. Select your screen resolution (Resolution) and frequency (Refresh Rate), your screensaver (Screensaver), wallpaper and the Windows schema.
Quick Setup Guide Linux STEP 8: SETTING BASIC NETWORK PARAMETERS (NETWORK) If you use DHCP, then your network settings are already confi gured. 5 To set network parameters, you need the information collected above on your network. You will require at least one local IP address and subnet mask. Many networks also use a name server and a default gateway Default Gateway. STEP 9: SAVE CHANGES Click on OK, so that your preferences go into effect. You will be prompted to confi rm this action. Your terminal will now process the new information in the confi guration database and make the corresponding setting. During the course of this process it may happen that the screen updates itself independently. This is completely normal. STEP 10: INITIATE SESSION Take a little time to become familiar with the IGEL Application Launcher. This program is a high-performance tool that serves to control the conduct of the session initiated by you. The IGEL Application Launcher is a multipurpose tool with which you initiate, process or conclude the various sessions. Select the IGEL Application Launcher on the start menu. Start the Setup application Select the Sessions tab and click the Add button to create a new session. Now you can select and confi gure each of the available sessions. Typical sessions include the ICA Session, RDP Session, PowerTerm Session, Local Shell, application via SSH/RSH. NOTE The term, session is used in a general sense to designate server connections and applications carried out locally on your terminal. In principle, every application started on your terminal is called session.
Quick Setup Guide Linux 6 Error Recognition and Elimination GENERAL INFORMATION ON SWITCHING OFF You do not need to follow any particular procedure before powering down your IGEL terminal. Since the operating system is read-only, only its standard parameters are restored by this. Only the data of the configuration database are permanently set in the file system. INSTRUCTIONS FOR REMOVING ERRORS Generally, your IGEL terminal is largely protected from any disturbances, since it has no moving parts and the operating system is stored in a write-protected file system. RESTORING THE DEFAULT FACTORY CONFIGURATION Restart the terminal and press the escape key as soon as the text loading kernel is displayed. This will present a menu consisting of 4 options to control the boot process: Quiet Boot (startup without a detailed display of the boot sequence),verbose Boot (display of the individual steps of the startup sequence, loading of the parameters and their values, etc.), Emergency Boot (emergency startup, only setup), Reset to Factory Defaults (restoration of the standard configuration made in the factory). If you have defined an administrator password for the terminal setup, then you will be prompted to input it before you are allowed to reset the terminal. If you own several IGEL Terminals or have a demo product, we recommend you retain some packaging for a possible return to your supplier or an exchange under warranty. When unpacking the product, please remember to be careful with the staples or any other sharp objects that could cause an injury. Check the packing list to ensure that you have all the necessary components. STEP 2: MAKING CONNECTIONS Connection cables of computer components and peripheral units not equipped with a USB interface, must not be connected while the units are under NOTE! STEP 3: START UP THE TERMINAL If your network is confi gured for using the DHCP, then no changes are required. The boot process takes just a few seconds, during which the IGEL opening image appears together with a progress bar. A series of services and settings, including the network confi guration, are initialized during the boot process.
TM Quick Setup Guide WES 2009 / W7 Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard STEP 4: LOGGING IN AS ADMINISTRATOR If the default parameters satisfy your requirements, you can skip sections 4 to 9 and continue with STEP 10: OPEN SESSION. 9 The familiar Windows desktop appears after the boot process has been completed The default screen resolution is 800 x 600 pixels at 60 Hz, whereby compatibility with practically all monitors is set during the initial confi guration. You are logged in as the USER default user. You must log in as ADMINISTRATOR to be able to change setup settings. To do this select the Log Off user option in the start menu and confi rm with the Log Off button with pressed SHIFT key. (Keep SHIFT pressed until the login mask appears, otherwise you will be automatically logged in as USER!) The login data is set by default to user / user or administrator / administrator. STEP 5: LANGUAGE SETTING (CONTROL PANEL) Open IGEL Setup from the start menu and select User Interface. On the Language tab you can change the setup language, Keyboard, Location and Standard & Formats settings. To change the system language, please refer to the FAQs on Save your changes and these will be applied to the thin client. STEP 6: SETTING THE INPUT DEVICES (QUICK SETUP > KEYBOARD) Click the QUICK SETUP icon in the task bar and select the Regional Settings entry from the pop up menu to choose your keyboard layout. The mouse confi guration (e.g. lefthand mode etc.) can be found within the IGEL SETUP. STEP 7: SETTING THE DISPLAY PARAMETERS (QUICK SETUP > DISPLAY) Before choosing a high resolution or refresh rate you should ensure that your monitor also supports this. Click the QUICK SETUP icon in the task bar and select the Display entry from the pop up menu to set your display s resolution, colour depth etc. STEP 8: SETTING THE BASIC NETWORK PARAMETERS (QUICK SETUP > NETWORK) If you use DHCP, your network settings are already confi gured. You require the previously gathered information about your network to set the network parameters. You require at least a local IP address and sub-network mask. Many networks also use a Nameserver (DNS) and default gateway.
TM Quick Setup Guide WES 2009 / W7 Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 10 STEP 9: SAVE CHANGES Click on SAVE to save the changes. End the IGEL setup with the OK button; the device will now restart, depending on which changes have been made. During this process it may be that the screen will update automatically, which is completely normal. STEP 10: OPEN SESSION The most important elements for setting up and starting diverse sessions are included in the IGEL setup. Among others you can confi gure sessions such as RDP, ICA and Browser. NOTE The term, session is used in a general sense to designate server connections and applications carried out locally on your terminal. In principle, every application started on your terminal is called session.
TM Quick Setup Guide WES 2009 / W7 Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 11 Finding and removing errors GENERAL INFORMATION ON SWITCHING OFF You do not have to follow any special procedure before shutting down your IGEL Terminal, as it will not be damaged by simply switching off. As the operating system is write-protected, this will only restore the default parameters. The File Based Write Filter (FBWF), which is in the administrator s start menu, must be deactivated in order to change data permanently. It is recommended, however, that you leave the FBWF activated. INSTRUCTIONS FOR REMOVING ERRORS For the most part your IGEL Terminal is largely safe from faults, as it does not have any moving parts and the operating system is saved on a read-only memory file system. Deficient configuration settings are therefore the most frequent causes of errors. RESTORING THE DEFAULT FACTORY CONFIGURATION Switch on the terminal and press the ESC button when the booting, please wait message appears. A menu with the following three options for controlling the boot process will then be displayed: Windows Embedded Standard (normal system start), Download Firmware Image (allows you to import a snapshot file), Start Rescue Shell (offers various set-up options). To restore the default configuration from the Rescue Shell, execute the reset_wes command. This resets all set-up parameters to their default values. If you have set an administrator password for terminal set-ups, you will be prompted to enter it before you can reset the terminal. SUPPORT Please contact our support department with any questions!
