2 Preparation - Family Tree Qin Shi Huangdi (259BC to 210 BC) was the First Emperor of a unified China. He was the Emperor who ordered the building of the Terracotta Army. His family tree was very complicated and he came from a long dynasty, which were called the Qin. A family tree is a map which shows you who your relatives are and how they are all related to each other over lots of generations. 4 Assignment Two Now that you have filled in your family tree, compare it to the family tree of the First Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi and answer the following questions 1. Who was Qin Shi Huangdi s Dad? 2. Who was Qin Shi Huangdi s Mum?.. 3. Who was Qin Shi Huangdi s Grandpa (his Dad s dad)?

5 Preparation - Mathematics China was divided into Six Kingdoms and each of these Kingdoms used a different type of money. That meant that if you had money in one Kingdom, you couldn t use it to buy anything in another Kingdom. So, when Qin Shi Huangdi became Emperor he changed this. He created a new type of money that all of the Kingdoms had to use. It was called the Half Liang (picture below)

6 Assignment Three Alice has 6 Half Liang in her purse and she wants to buy as many vegetables as possible. When she visits the market she has a look at the cost of the vegetables. 7 Preparation or During Visit Human Body The warrior statues are assembled from lots of different parts. Amongst them were the following parts of the body: Feet Legs Torso (stomach and chest) Arms Hands Head Each of these parts, were made separately and then all put together to build the warrior statue, a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. Even though the Warriors were all made from the same body parts, they all looked different to one another. The craftsmen who made the Warriors gave them different facial expressions, different eyebrows and different ears; while some had moustaches and some had beards. By making them all look different the people who made the Warriors were able to show us whether they were young or old age, and also show us the mood of the Warrior - angry or thoughtful, happy or sad.

8 Assignment Four Draw a line from each body part to where it belongs on the Warrior. Don t forget to think about which one is the left arm and which is the right arm!

9 During Your Visit The Terracotta Army is the last great archaeological find of the 20th century, after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen. The archeological site was divided into several areas known as Pits. In each of these Pits they discovered different types of statues; some were Warriors, some animals and many other types that you ll learn about on your visit. So, let s begin and embark on a fabulous voyage that will take you back to China, as it was, more than 2,200 years ago. There are several questions and assignments to accompany the exhibition. If you look carefully, you will find most of the answers yourself. You may even find them on the wall! Assignment Five Which Warrior is this? 10 During your visit - Can you find the Bronze statues of two birds? As one of the oldest civilisations in the world, China has thousands of symbols important to their culture. These two birds were very important symbols in Chinese traditional culture and have special meanings. This bird symbolized longevity. Chinese often used them as symbols to wish someone a long life. What is it called?.. This bird was a messenger of good news and a symbol of courage, unity, solidarity and loyalty. What is it called? FUN. FAST. FACTS. The Terracotta Army was made up of many types of Warriors.

11 Each member of the Army had a different role. Charioteers who drove the beautiful Bronze horse-drawn carriages. High Ranking Officers wore detailed armour. The Infantrymen wore long robes. There were two types of Archers, Kneeling and Standing both holding a bow and arrow. Assignment Seven During your visit 1. Which is your favourite type of Terracotta Warrior? Why? 2. Who do you think was the most important person in the Terracotta Army? Why? What did the Cavalryman have that the Archer did not?.. Did you know? As well as ordering the creation of the Terracotta Army, The First Emperor, Shi Huangdi was responsible for the construction of many other important buildings in China. He ordered the

12 digging of canals and built lots of palaces. But most importantly, he built the very first version of the Great Wall of China. It was over 2000km long. When they built the wall they used rice to stick the bricks together! Assignment Eight The site of the Terracotta Army was one of the greatest Archaeological Discoveries in history. Can you name the other important Archaeological sites below?? Use your imagination.
