4 Introduction Traditionally, minimal hardware requirement for a fault tolerant Hyper-V failover cluster setup is 2 Hyper-V hosts and at least 2 servers or SANs which will provide shared storage to the cluster and also replicate it in real time for data access redundancy. 3 JBOD Enclosures and proprietary SAS fabric interconnect is required if Clustered storage spaces are used as the storage layer. This often makes the setup complex and expensive to implement from both cost and management prospective. StarWind Virtual SAN allows users to create a fully redundant, fault tolerant Hyper-V failover cluster and shared storage for it using just the 2 Hyper-V hosts and their local storage, without any dedicated storage hardware or proprietary equipment necessary. This introduces an added value compared to the native storage solutions available for Hyper-V. This document shows how to configure StarWind Virtual SAN on 2 dedicated servers to provide fault tolerant shared storage to a client hypervisor cluster. A configuration with a dedicated SAN layer gives customers the ability to provide both block level and file level storage to the clients, resulting in a unified SAN/NAS solution which can be used for different applications and virtualization environments at the same time. It also allows users to configure StarWind Virtual SAN as a gateway to consolidate their heterogeneous storage environment into a single storage resource pool. Backend SANs can be a mix of different SANs from different vendors using different storage media like FC and iscsi. This guide is intended for experienced Windows system administrators and IT professionals who would like to configure a hyper-converged Scale-out File Server cluster using StarWind Virtual SAN to convert the local or iscsi attached storage of the cluster nodes into a fault tolerant shared storage resource to be then presented to the client servers using SMB3 file share protocol. 5 Pre-Configuring the Servers This document assumes that you have already configured Active Directory and added two servers to the domain. It also assumes that you have installed the Failover Clustering, Multipath I/O features (enabled for iscsi devices for example using MPIO manager), and the Hyper-V role on the both servers. These configurations can be performed using Server Manager (the Add Roles and Features option). 1. Install StarWind. 2. Open a StarWind configuration file. NOTE: The default path is C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind\StarWind.cfg Find the string "<!--<iscsidiscoverylistinterfaces value="1"/> -->" and uncomment it (should look as follows: <iscsidiscoverylistinterfaces value="1"/>). Restart StarWind Service and repeat the same procedure on another StarWind nodes. TECHNICAL PAPER 5

7 Creating Virtual disk (WITNESS, CSV1, CSV2) 1. Open Add Device Wizard by one of the following ways: Right-click a StarWind server and select Add Device (advanced) from the shortcut menu. Select a StarWind server and click the Add Device (advanced) button on the toolbar. 2. As Add Device Wizard appears, follow the instructions to complete creation of a new disk. 3. Select Hard disk device as the type of a device to be created. Click Next to continue. 4. Select Virtual disk. Click Next to continue. 5. Specify a virtual disk location and size. 6. Click Next. 8 7. Specify virtual disk options. 8. Click Next to continue. 9. Define the caching policy and specify the cache size (in MB). You can also set maximum available cache size by selecting the appropriate checkbox. TECHNICAL PAPER 8

9 10. Click Next to continue. 11. Optionally, define the L2 caching policy and the cache size. Click Next to continue. 12. Specify target parameters. Select the Target Name checkbox to enter a custom name of a target. Otherwise, the name is generated automatically in accordance with the specified target alias. 13. Click Next to continue. 14. Click Create to add a new device and attach it to the target. 15. Click Finish to close the wizard. TECHNICAL PAPER 9

10 16. Right-click the recently created device and select Replication Manager from the shortcut menu. Then, click Add replica. 17. Select Synchronous two-way replication as a replication mode. TECHNICAL PAPER 10

11 18. Click Next to proceed. 19. Specify a partner hostname, IP address and port number. 20. Click Next. 21. Choose Create new Partner Device and click Next. TECHNICAL PAPER 11

12 22. Click Change network settings Specify interfaces for synchronization and Heartbeat channels. Click OK. Then click Next. TECHNICAL PAPER 12

15 Adding Discover portals This document assumes that you have already installed the Multipath I/O features (enabled for iscsi devices for example using MPIO manager) on the hypervisor servers. These configurations can be performed using Server Manager (the Add Roles and Features option). On cluster nodes 1. Launch Microsoft iscsi Initiator: Start > Administrative Tools > iscsi Initiator. The iscsi Initiator Properties window appears. 2. Navigate to the Discovery tab. 3. Click the Discover Portal button. Discover Target Portal dialog appears. Click Advanced button. TECHNICAL PAPER 15

16 4. Select Microsoft ISCSI Initiator as your Local adapter and select your Initiator IP. 5. Enter an IP address of local StarWind Server in the appropriate field of the Discover Target Portal dialog. 6. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 16

18 9. Select Microsoft ISCSI Initiator as your Local adapter, select your Initiator IP. 10. Enter an IP address of partner StarWind Server from the same subnet in the appropriate field of the Discover Target Portal dialog. 11. Click the Discover Portal button once again. 12. 22 Connecting Targets 1. Click the Targets tab. The previously created targets are listed in the Discovered Targets section. NOTE: If the created targets are not listed, check the firewall settings of the StarWind Server as well as the list of networks served by the StarWind Server (go to StarWind Management Console -> Configuration -> Network). 2. Select a target located on the local server and click Connect. TECHNICAL PAPER 22

23 3. Select Add this connection to the list of Favorite Targets and Enable multi-path checkboxes in the Connect to Target dialog. Click Advanced. 4. Select Microsoft iscsi Initiator in the Local adapter text field. 5. In the Target portal IP select the first portal IP. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 23

24 Select the same target like in step before and again click Connect. Select Add this connection to the list of Favorite Targets and Enable multi-path checkboxes in the Connect to Target dialog. Click Advanced. 6. Select Microsoft iscsi Initiator in the Local adapter text field. 7. In the Target portal IP select the first portal IP. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 24

25 8. Select the partner-target from second StarWind node and click Connect. 9. Select Microsoft iscsi Initiator in the Local adapter text field. In the Initiator IP field select the IP address. In the Target portal IP select the corresponding portal IP from the same subnet. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 25

26 10. Select the same target like in step before and again click Connect. 11. This time in target portal IP in dropdown list select another datachannel IP addresses for initiator and target portal. Click OK. 12. Repeat actions described in the steps above for other HA devices (CSV1, CSV2). TECHNICAL PAPER 26

27 13. After that repeat the same steps described in this section on the second StarWind node, specifying corresponding local and datachannel IP addresses. You should get like on screen below. 14. After that initialize the disks and create partitions, as if they were physical hard drives. TECHNICAL PAPER 27

28 Creating a Cluster 1. Open Server Manager. Select the Failover Cluster Manager item from the Tools menu. 2. Click the Create Cluster item in the Actions section of Failover Cluster Manger. TECHNICAL PAPER 28

29 3. Specify servers to be included to the cluster. 4. Click Next to continue. 5. Verify that your servers are suitable for building a cluster: select Yes and click Next. TECHNICAL PAPER 29

30 6. Specify a cluster name. NOTE: If the cluster servers get IP addresses over DHCP, the cluster also gets its IP address over DHCP. If the IP addresses are set statically, you need to set a cluster IP address manually as well. 7. Click Next to continue. TECHNICAL PAPER 30

31 8. Make sure that all of the settings are correct. Click Previous to make any changes. Click Next to continue. 9. The process of cluster creation starts. After it is completed, the system displays a report with detailed information. 10. Click Finish to close the wizard. TECHNICAL PAPER 31

32 Adding Cluster Shared Volumes To add Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) that is necessary to work with Hyper-V virtual machines: 1. Open Failover Cluster Manager. 2. Go to Cluster->Storage -> Disks. 3. Right-click the required disk and select Add to Cluster Shared Volumes. Once the disks are added to the cluster shared volumes list you can start creating highly available virtual machines. NOTE: to avoid unnecessary CSV overhead configure each CSV to be owned by one cluster node. This node should also be the preferred owner of the VMs running on that node. TECHNICAL PAPER 32
