Do not cut out the shape on the cover. 3. With the exception of the cover, fold each page in half, keeping the blank side on the outside. The cover should be folded along both sides of the spine, with the blank side facing inward. 4. C RIGHT E 4. Glue the blank side of page 2 to the blank side of page 3. Continue this process for all pages 2 through 13; gluing 4 to 5, 6 to 7, and so on. 5. Glue the blank sides of the cover page to the blank sides of pages 1 and B LEFT 6. Cut out the shape on the cover. The hole you create should act as a window in which you can see the otter on page As you complete the requirements for the Discovery Badges color each one in. 8. 4 All About Owls Known for their large eyes and their mysterious habits, owls are birds of prey that can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Owls can be found in lots of different shapes, sizes, and colors, from large and dark gray to small and snow white! Did You Know? Most owls are nocturnal, which means they are active at night, but some owls are crepuscular, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. Facts & Figures There are over 200 species of owls. Weighing just over one ounce, the elf owl is the smallest owl species. Some owls can weigh up to ten pounds and have a wingspan of over six feet! 3 4

5 Owl Habitat Helpful Habitat Write a description of where you would live in the deep forest. Is it in a tree? On the ground? In a cave? What advantages does this location have? Almost Every Habitat Is Home Owls can be found in almost every ecosystem on the planet, from tundra to grassland to woodland. Most owls nest in small recesses and holes in trees, cliffs, buildings, and even the ground! 35 64

6 Social Behavior Owl Anatomy Owls are solitary animals, and they spend most of their time alone. When it comes time to look for a mate, some owls use a variety of calls to attract others. EARS EYES PLUMICORNS FACIAL DISC NECK Vivid Vocals You may not realize it, but you use your vocals for more than just talking. Try having a conversation with your friends using just whistles, hums, and other noises. Though it may look like owls ears are near the feathers at the top of their heads, their ears are actually located on their facial disc. This disc acts like a satellite dish that gathers sound, giving owls extraordinary hearing! Owls can also turn their heads 270 degrees to see and hear lots of the world around them! 37 84

7 Owl Diet Functional Features Owls have sharp beaks and talons because they hunt other animals. What features would owls have if they ate plants? Draw a picture of a plant-eating owl. Unique Skill: Hunting Owls hunt insects, fish, birds, and rodents, and they swallow their food whole. Later, they throw up a pellet made of all the parts that can t be digested. Scientists know what owls eat by studying bones, feathers, and fur that are in owl pellets. All owls hunt, but unlike other birds, most owls have special feathers on their wings that soften the sound of the wind. These feathers allow owls to sneak up on their prey by flying in almost total silence. Owls also use their strong, opposable toes and their large talons to get a tight grip on their prey

8 Experiment The cone shape of owls facial discs helps funnel lots of sound into their ears. Your ears are shaped differently, but with a few quick modifications, you can know what it s like to hear like an owl! WHAT YOU NEED large piece of paper, tape INSTRUCTIONS Roll the paper into a cone, with one opening being small and the other being large. Tape the cone together. Hold the small end of the cone against your ear and point the large end at different noises that are different distances away. Questions to Ask 1. Does the cone make it easier or harder to hear noises it is pointed at? 2. Is it easier or harder to hear noise the cone is not pointed at? 3. What happens if you make the large end of the cone wider? Narrower? Excellent Ears Think of an owl, a human, an elephant, a horse, a lion, and a wolf. List why you think each animal s ears are shaped the way they are
