2 Void Scanner supports new project plans The Renishaw Void Scanner is an innovative system for on-the-spot, underground mine surveys, which can be used to support project planning and daily operational decision-making. Practical and easy-to-use, Void Scanner provides 3D laser scans of subterranean voids, stopes, tunnels and shafts, and is built specifically to operate in conditions found in underground mines. By giving you more confidence in the data used to plan new programmes of extraction, and in the data used to evaluate the volume of extraction, Void Scanner makes the complex and time-consuming process of operational planning and improvement, simpler and easier to achieve. Since 2008, underground mines have used Void Scanner to plan new, profitable projects, safely and efficiently, as well as to complete regular checks for auditing and safety management purposes. Increase safety Flexible deployment methods let you scan inaccessible voids, from a place of safety, quickly. Detailed models of underground voids enable safe project planning. As-built models run through computational fluid dynamic (CFD) packages help to ascertain ventilation network efficiency. Improve efficiency Large areas can be surveyed quickly by one or two operators, who need only minimal training. 3D data can be used to improve installation times on costly projects and verify the accuracy of an installation against design. 3 Void Scanner applications Mapping abandoned mines enables project managers to evaluate the safety of activities. Mine subsidence and collapsed mines Void Scanner can be used to safely scan abandoned room and pillar workings, and collapsed mines, where an aperture of 15 cm or more exists. Data can be used to plan mitigation work (shotcreting, sealing and closure), or used in support of planning or environmental applications. New project planning Whether it is to satisfy environmental or safety requirements, or to assess the profitability of a new project, accurate, detailed data is important for feasibility studies and crucial for evaluating new ventures. New value opportunities The visualisation capabilities of the Void Scanner and its 3D manipulation tools allow our customers to gain valuable data, which supports the creation of new value opportunities. For example, the geological data obtained can be used to help identify new ore bodies, while the spatial measurements from Void Scanner can be used to aid mine design in CAD. Once the mine design is complete Void Scanner is used throughout the mine infrastructure development and build stages often alongside other surveying and measurement tools to check that work is completed according to design, including the positioning of installations. Void Scanner helped to create the first ever complete 3D model of the UK s famous Gaping Gill cave. Multiple Void Scanner scans can be stitched together easily to build up a complete map. Void Scanner gives mine owners the opportunity to gather this data at a low cost, reliably, and so is often used by customers wishing to survey a newly acquired mining property, as well as customers wishing to ensure that safe extraction has been maximised in current holdings. Because it is easy to stitch together point cloud data from several Void Scanner deployments, and to insert Void Scanner data into maps held in other mining software packages, a full 3D picture can be created. Safety Renishaw s Void Scanner can measure tunnels, voids and stopes in areas that have been mined previously but where maps are incomplete or lacking in accuracy. This means that when planning projects, managers can ensure that it is safe to proceed with new extraction operations. The detailed maps can also be used to help plan shotcrete, sealing and closure, as well as for other safety measures. Reconciliation of underground workings and ore stockpiles End-of-shift scans take just minutes, and give mine foremen a record of the volume extracted for a quick, easy, accurate record of productivity. Renishaw s Void Scanner can also be used to survey waste and ore stockpiles, to help audit operations and account for material. As well as providing vital data to support operational management, the two data sets can be used to help evaluate mine workings against the planned design, and to adjust predicted extraction on a regular basis.

4 Underground blast planning Blast optimisation helps minimise the problems associated with vibration, flyrock, and over- or under-fragmentation. Void Scanner makes blast optimisation easier to complete, and can transform the profitablity of mining operations, at a low cost of investment. By using Void Scanner to accurately measure the size of voids, the optimal quantity of explosives can be calculated more easily, resulting in safer, more accurate blasting. 5 How it works Laser scanning Laser scanning is a quick, modern, and highly accurate surveying method, which requires little operator training. 3D laser scanning captures spatial data by the use of laser light. The laser in the Void Scanner probe sends out pulses of infrared light, which bounce off solid surfaces and are then received back into the Void Scanner. The shape, position, and spatial locations of objects are recorded by millions of points, each with XYZ co-ordinates. The laser distance measurements are accurate to around +/ 5 cm and the encoders measuring the direction of the laser are accurate to 0.2. Quick set up and scan time Void Scanner scans more quickly than other surveying tools: With a 200 points per second scan rate, a full 1 scan will take around 12 minutes. Void Scanner offers a 360 horizontal scan and a vertical scan extent of 270. Set up is quick and simple: Essential for those customers using Void Scanner for daily void volume calculations. Ten minutes is sufficient to unpack the system, connect cables, mount to the boom, and ready the laptop. The Void Scanner is powered by either a 12 V dc battery, or by mains power: A battery and an ac power adaptor are included in the package, or operators can use a 12 V car battery or equivalent power source. Locating the void relative to other maps To plan new projects, customers want to know the absolute position of any voids they scan. The Renishaw Void Scanner comes with a 360 prism, which screws onto a mount on top of the Void Scanner. A total station can be used to shoot in the position of the prism in relation to local survey control points. Once the position of the Void Scanner is established through observations to the attached prism, one more co-ordinate referencing the back end of the boom allows the software to calculate the orientation of the boom, and the system itself. Rugged design, portability and a range of deployment methods mean Void Scanner can go deep underground where other systems cannot. Designed for deep underground mines As underground mining has ventured ever deeper in recent years, Void Scanner is designed to withstand the higher operating temperatures found deep underground, as well as being robust and portable enough to be used for multiple deployments. Many of our units have been in operation for over six years. The lightweight and portable Void Scanner weighs 5 kg and, with a diameter of just 15 cm, can be deployed into very small apertures. Versatile deployment Void Scanner s flexible deployment options give customers the opportunity to reach previously innaccessible or dangerous voids, safely and quickly. Void Scanner s mounting points allow it to be deployed by tripod, boom, mast, crane or wire line. The system also has built-in digital three-axis pitch-and-roll sensors to automatically correct for the instrument s inclination, whether deployed vertically or horizontally. Data output and control (from tablet PCs or PDAs) is via a 13 m power/data cable. A WiFi option is available and can be used, for example, when the instrument is deployed from robotic unmanned mining machinery. Multiple Void Scanner scans can be joined to each other or to datasets collected by other means, once the co-ordinate reference points are known.
