1 A Midsummer Night s Dream Project Overview You will read three versions of a project of your choice. Part 1 this famous play by Shakespeare and will work in groups in 1. Look at the Wordle poster shown by the teacher and discuss what you think the play is about A Midsummer Night s Dream is about 2. Read the prose version of the play 3. Read the cartoon version of the play 4. Read the selected original extracts from the play 1

2 Part 2 1. Do the comprehension worksheets about the story What the Puck (reading) Who s Who? (characters) Shakespeare s language (language analysis) Puck Final Monologue 2. Get into groups and choose what you want to work on from this list One from this list 1. Act out a scene: Choose a scene (or portion) to present to the class. You may choose to rewrite your scenes or present them as they are. 2. Create a puppet show of a scene 3. Analyze Shakespeare s language use in the original play 4. Compare the three versions: prose, cartoon, play second Shakespeare: create a 60-second video, slideshow, animation, rap or poem about the play 6. Analyze Shakespeare s time at the time of this play 7. Character Diaries: Choose a character and write a journal/diary from his/her point of view retelling all the events he/she experienced. 8. A set of comprehension activities (worksheets) 9. Create a stage setting and costume design for the play Or two from this list 10. Create a diagram of flow chart of the four pairs of lovers Theseus/Hippolyta, Oberon/Titania, Lysander/Hermia, and Demetrius/Helena and explain how it changes throughout the play to the final pairings. 11. Which of the four women is more like a modern-day woman? In what ways is each of them modern? 12. Character analysis: choose one character and analyze it 13. Write Agony Aunt letters from: Hermia, Helena and Egeus. 14. Write or perform an interview with a character 15. Conflict resolution: Hermia s father wants her to marry Demetrius. But she loves Lysander, and Lysander loves her. According to ancient laws without her father s approval, she can t marry him!! What would happen nowadays in the same situation? Why do young people in love sometimes experience conflict with their parents? What is the best way to resolve a conflict? Read this chart: 1. identify the problem 2.determine the importance of the problem 3. identify and discuss options 4. agree on an option 5.act on your decision 6. evaluate your decision If you have another idea, tell the teacher to see if it s possible 2

4 Frolicsome fairies cause love mix-up "My Oberon! what visions have I seen! Methought I was enamoured of an ass." Titania (above) Act 4, Scene 1 Thanks to cheeky imp Puck and his magic love-juice, the woods are alive with the sounds of kissing. Following orders from fairy Chief Oberon, the sprite sorted out a thorny love-tangle amongst the youth of Athens - but not without a few hiccups. And the night didn't go so well for Oberon's missus Titania, who made a real ass of herself! It began when young stud Demetrius decided he'd wed babe Hermia, and got her Dad's say-so to do it. But the course of true love never did run smooth - she preferred luscious lover Lysander instead! All the time, leggy lovely Helena was mooning after dishy Demetrius - who couldn't have cared less. When saucy pair Hermia and Lysander ran off to the woods, Demetrius was quick to follow - with hapless Helena trailing after. But pesky pixie Puck had a surprise in store for them. Meanwhile, some local yokels had the fright of their life when the little mischief maker gave their mate Nick Bottom a donkey's Continued below... Oberon He's King of the Fairies, so he's pretty used to being obeyed. That meant when his missus Titania wouldn't give him what he wanted, he made sure she'd regret it! head, then used his magic powers to make Fairy Queen Titania fall for the silly ass. The two were left together for true love to follow its course - at least until hubby with the hump Oberon had had enough of Titania's embarrassment. Titania The Queen of the Fairies, is a strong proud woman who keeps her promises. Despite being very much in love, she and Oberon can have their disagreements. Puck Oberon's right hand hobgoblin, Puck's fond of playing pranks on people. Amongst his talents are magic, invisibility and girdling the earth in forty minutes. Next Puck worked his magic mojo to make Demetrius fall in love with Helen - but the fairy feller botched the job. He realised his mistake after setting both Lysander and Demetrius drooling over Helena, and soon set things right. There'll be a double wedding in the morning! Bottom Down-to-earth weaver Nick Bottom has a pretty high opinion of himself, despite his crude manners. Puck made an ass of him, but gave him a night to remember in Titania's arms. "The course of true love never did run smooth" Lysander Act 1, Scene 1 "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." Helena, Act 1, scene 1
