1 SUGGESTED ATTIRE AND SADDLERY FOR SHOW AND WORKING HUNTER CLASSES Clothing and tack should be workmanlike, practical, clean and free of defect. Riding wear should be conservative, without garish colour/glitter/sparkle. SADDLERY Natural coloured leather dressage/ show/all purpose saddle, brown is preferable but not essential. A plain sheepskin half pad/numnah may be used under the saddle. It should fit the saddle and be unobtrusive in both colour and cut. It is preferable that the colour be the same as the horse s colour or the saddle. The girth should preferably be leather and match the colour of the saddle, however, girths made of other materials such as neoprene should not be penalised. White girths should not be worn on a dark horse, however may suit a grey or broken coloured horse, being unobtrusive. A beautifully made, well fitting bridle, specifically created for a hunter with flat noseband and browband in havanna brown. Bridle to be plain (ie not patent) leather and the same or similar colour to the saddle. It should not be fine, the browband and cavesson should be plain and flat. A plaited top rein is fine as is a plaited leather browband. A thicker noseband is traditionally used on an animal with a plain head/roman nose to help hide its plainness. Thus you would not generally use a thick noseband on an animal with an attractive head. Bitting is to be a simple snaffle/pelham/bit and bridoon with no deviations ie wire snaffle etc. 1

2 CANES/WHIPS A plain bamboo or leather covered cane or plaited crop with subtle decoration may be carried but generally should not exceed 75cm in length, minus a lash. A full hunting whip complete with tongue and lash is the most correct accessory but not mandatory to complete the overall appearance. GROOMING OF THE HORSE Subtle, non oily/shiny makeup; the tail should be plaited or pulled and a false tail may be utilised. A plaited mane is preferable, a hogged mane should not be penalised. Quarter marks to enhance but to remain subtle. No glitter should be applied to the animal. WORKING HUNTER CLASSES All previously mentioned may be utilised, however the all purpose saddle may be the most convenient option bearing in mind there is no change of gear allowed in these classes. A running martingale is permissible and a set of protective boots may be worn for the jumping phase but must be removed for conformation judging. A beautiful and correct picture of horse and rider well presented for a major state show. The rider wears a tweed jacket, with complimentary, yet coordinated collar and tie. The rider has chosen brown gaiters and boots which are perfectly acceptable, and carries a full hunt whip. The tack chosen completes a superb picture. 2

3 RIDER ATTIRE ADULTS Headwear should be an appropriate colour to the rider s attire. Any rider at any event organised by, or affiliated with AHHA must wear a helmet which has been safety approved according to the current Australian/New Zealand, European or American safety standards. The chinstraps of which should be secured at all times whilst mounted. A well fitted tweed jacket worn with a collar and tie. A dark coloured jacket may be worn with a ratcatcher or stock. No mini tails or cut aways, plain, frock style being the most appropriate. The jacket may be single or double vented with a solid coloured dark lining with plain unadorned, matching buttons (unless hunt buttons have been awarded by the rider s hunt club) Traditionally velvet or colours on the collar are not worn unless issued by the rider s hunt club. Red jackets are traditionally only ever worn by males who have again been awarded their hunt club s button. Tweed/plaid material should be subtle and remain traditional without gaudy colour or print. The shirt may be white or a cream to tone with the overall attire. Cufflinks may be worn with a French cuffed shirt. The vest should not be bright in colour and it is preferable to be mustard or a colour matching the jacket. The stock may be traditional or ready tied, but must remain white or cream in colour. The tie may have some colour, navy or red polka dot or similar in the tie itself is suitable. An appropriate plain stock pin or tie tack may be worn and may have a fox/horse/whip emblem. Gloves may be made of leather or string. Leather should be toning to the jacket, the leather of string gloves should match the colour of the breeches/jodhpurs. Jewellery and makeup should be subtle if worn and the rider s hair should be immaculate again without brightly coloured adornment. Plain fawn, banana or buff coloured jodhpurs/breeches. 3 Horse and rider dressed traditionally and formally to compete at the highest level in a hunter class. The rider wears black with correctly tied stock and plain stock pin. The rider carrying a full hunt whip complete with lash. The horse beautifully presented with correct, unobtrusive and workmanlike saddlery and subtle make up and quartermarks suitable for a hunter.

4 Plain black or brown boots being either jodhpur boots, boots and gaiters or top boots. Plain blunt/dummy spurs are permissible if required, however the shank should be no more than 3.5cm long and point toward the rear of the horse. CHAMPIONSHIP, HORSE OF THE YEAR, ROYAL SHOW CHAMPIONSHIPS (ADULTS) A stock and stock pin with a solid dark coloured jacket. A top hat (if show rules allow) or dark helmet Top boots with garter straps to match. Gents may wear black top boots with mahogany cuff Full hunt whip to complete the formality. NB: Competitors obviously will not be penalised if they do not adhere to the above as these are a guide only for championship classes. CHILDREN Headwear should be an appropriate colour to the rider s attire. The rider s hair should be immaculate with subtle decoration such as ribbons in a toning shade to the attire. Plain fawn, banana or buff coloured jodhpurs/breeches. Plain brown jodhpur boots with jodhpur clips if required. Plain blunt/dummy spurs are permissible if required, however the shank should be no more than 3.5cm long and point toward the rear of the horse. A beautifully presented child rider in a dark navy coat, collar and tie and with matching hat; cream jodhpurs and well polished jodhpur boots. The rider carries a neat bamboo cane. Not the unobtrusive cream half pad, most suited to a grey. Subtle make up on the pony completes a beautiful picture. LEADING REIN/IN HAND Female and male handlers may wear riding attire or street wear, children certainly look best in riding attire for in hand classes. The female handler may wear a smart skirt or pant suit in subdued autumnal or tweed tones teamed with gloves and a hat suited to the outfit and purpose of the class. Smart, sensible shoes and pantihose should be worn, again with minimal makeup and jewellery. The handler s hair should be immaculate. The gentleman handler may wear a flat cap, Akubra or trilby style hat in tweed or plain, with a tailored tweed or plain jacket with collar and tie, beige trousers or moleskins with riding boots or smart shoes for less formal occasions. A smart suit with collar and tie with matching hat for more formal occasions and leading rein classes. If for leading rein, the handler s attire should tie in with the child s overall colours scheme.
