2 T his year during the International Bar Association (IBA) 2009 Annual Conference, to be held 4 9 October in Madrid, the IBA s Young Lawyers Committee, in collaboration with LexisNexis, will again present an award to a young lawyer who has shown not only excellence in their work and achievements in their career to date, but also a commitment to professional and ethical standards. In its role as a dual membership organisation, comprising 30,000 individual lawyers and more than 195 bar associations and law societies, the IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession. Its Member Organisations cover all continents and include the American Bar Association, the German Federal Bar, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the Law Society of Zimbabwe and the Mexican Bar Association. The IBA Young Lawyers Committee s goal is to identify, discuss and promote issues relevant to young lawyers. Its purpose is to be an introduction to the IBA for young lawyers, so that from there they can learn about the other IBA committees and become further involved in the Association. LexisNexis is honoured to have partnered with the IBA Young Lawyers Committee to create the William Reece Smith Jr Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award. A former IBA President, William Reece Smith Jr has distinguished himself as one the finest and most respected legal experts. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he has demonstrated leadership in the legal profession as an accomplished lawyer, an extensively published legal scholar and lecturer, a mentor and an outstanding community servant. In addition, Mr Smith has exemplified a commitment to advancing many charitable and civic causes, most notably in his support for legal services to the poor. LexisNexis is delighted to sponsor an award in his name to recognise a young lawyer who has demonstrated outstanding professionalism. The IBA Young Lawyers Committee and LexisNexis invite you to nominate a young lawyer who you believe is deserving of this prestigious award. To do this, please complete and submit this form to Sibylle Duell at the IBA London office. The award will include a free registration to attend the conference, a contribution of up to US$5000 to cover accommodation and travel costs, and one years free membership of the IBA, PPID and the Young Lawyers Committee. All applications received by Friday 3 July 2009 will be submitted to a judging panel who must be satisfied that the nominee is eligible for the award. 3 The International Bar Association (IBA), the world s largest international organisation of law societies, bar associations and individual lawyers engaged in transnational law, will hold its 2009 Annual Conference in Madrid from 4 to 9 October. As one of the largest international legal gatherings in 2009, it will attract some 3,000 lawyers from more than 90 countries. All 48 specialist committees of the IBA s Legal Practice Division will present programmes covering current topics of significance to commercial lawyers worldwide. The IBA s Public and Professional Interest Division s committees will also be presenting full sessions, covering topics dealing with public interest and general professional work. 4 The IBA Outstanding Young Lawyer of the year Award in recognition of William Reece Smith Jr 1 Nominees will be considered on the following criteria: professional excellence; a reputation for, or advancement of, legal ethics and professional responsibility; service to the community local and further afield; and other merits similar to the above or considered relevant by the candidate or his/her nominators, such as an innovative approach to their legal practice, including, but not restricted to, pro bono work. 2 The award is free to enter. The decision will be published on the IBA website and in the next IBA Young Lawyers Committee newsletter following the award. The winner will be contacted at the address they have given on the form. They will be required to provide a biographical note giving details of their legal career, studies and professional appointments. 9 The award will be presented to the winner at the time of the IBA 2009 Annual Conference during the IBA Young Lawyers Reception, which will be held on Thursday 8 October 2009 in Madrid, Spain. 10 The winner, as part of the award, will also receive the following: a free registration for the IBA 2009 Annual Conference, 4 9 October 2009, Madrid, Spain; a contribution of up to US$5000 towards accommodation and travel costs to attend the conference; one years free membership of the IBA, PPID and Young Lawyers Committee 11 The IBA, the Young Lawyers Committee, LexisNexis and the judging panel are not responsible for the loss, damage or non-arrival of any nomination form, nor for any costs or expenses incurred in the preparation or the submission of any form. 12 Participants will be expected to have read and accepted all the above terms and conditions. 13 The IBA reserves the right to amend and update these terms and conditions at any time without notice.
