IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE The minimum transferrable course grade is C- Majors in Psychology must present Math 30-1 before Year 2 if planning on taking PSYC 312. University of Alberta Psychology Majors ONLY can present Math 30-2 and take STAT 251 to satisfy 3 credits of U of A s stat requirement. Majors in Economics must have Math 30-1 for Admission into U of A. All U of A BA Degrees require the completion of at least 6 credits in one language other than English If you have credit at the 30 level in High School in a language other than English (i.e. French or Spanish), do not enroll in the 100 equivalents at RDC start off at the 200 level. Courses that transfer to the U of A at the 100 Level are Junior Courses Courses that transfer to the U of A at the 200 or 300 level are Senior Courses. CMPT 261 does NOT transfer to U of A Students interested in Criminology must have completed at least 30 transferable credits before applying. 3 Recommended RDC Courses for Specific Majors NOTE: Courses listed may not be offered every year. Bolded courses are offered for the year. ANTHROPOLOGY Year 1: Choose 2 of: ANTH 200, ANTH 201, ANTH 204 Year 2: ANTH 306, ANTH 307, ANTH 308, ANTH 309 Notes: Do not take ANTH 200 or 201 if you have completed ANTH 203. ANTH 306, 307, 308, and 309 may not be offered every year. Take other Senior, Transferrable ANTH to total 12 credits in year 2 if courses not available. ECONOMICS MATH 30 PURE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS MAJOR Year 1: ECON 201, ECON 202, MATH 202 or 203 Year 2: ECON 381, STAT 251 and 6 credits of Senior, Transferrable ECON - see notes. Notes: MATH 202 and STAT 251 will also fulfill Science Requirement. You may replace up to 6 credits of Sr. ECON with minor or option courses in year 2 depending on course availability. ENGLISH Year 1: ENGL 219, ENGL 220 Year 2: 18 credits (*) of Senior, Transferable English Courses. Recommended to include a diverse course selection. The RDC English department recommends taking ENGL 302 (6*), ENGL 340 (6*) and 6 additional credits of Senior, Transferable English. Note: - Students with credit in ENGL 332 should not take ENGL While the majority of our ENGL courses transfer to the University of Alberta, not all transfer as specific courses. Many courses transfer as ENGL 2xx. The University of Alberta will attempt to fit all your completed courses into the transfer that is most advantageous to you. However, not all courses are guaranteed to transfer into a specific category. You are allowed a maximum of 48* in your degree, so whatever you do not finish at RDC you can finish at the U of A. Ensure to check the Alberta Transfer Guide to guarantee transferability of courses. HISTORY Year One: 2 of HIST 207, HIST 208, HIST 209, or CLAS 209 Year Two: 12 credits of Transferable, Senior HIST (see note below) Note: The Department of History and Classics strongly recommends that students avoid undue concentration in any one field of History. Students are urged to take courses in different chronological eras, in different geographical areas, and among different themes. These themes include: (1) Chronological Eras: Ancient History, Medieval History (to 1500), Early Modern History ( ), and Modern History (1750 to Present) (2) Geographical Eras: Africa and the Middle East, Asia, Canada, Europe (including Britain), Latin America and the United States (3) Thematic Fields: the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, the History of Religion, Women and Gender, and Perspectives on Empire In addition to courses offered in History (HIST), students may count up to 6* of Ancient History towards a major. 4 MODERN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE STUDIES: FRENCH AND/OR SPANISH The Modern Languages and Cultural Studies program at the University of Alberta allows the completion of a separate major or a combined major in languages other than English. In each case, students must also complete a minor field of study. Year One: FREN 202 & FREN 203 or SPAN 101 & SPAN 102 (only if no prior 30 level Spanish from school) Year Two: FREN 302 & FREN 303 or SPAN 201 & SPAN 202; if doing combined major, take 6 credits in each Note: SPAN 101/SPAN 102 will not count towards major requirements, but will work as option/second language requirements. If you have no prior FREN/SPAN history, it is recommended to start at the 100 levels at RDC. Starting at the 100 levels may add extra time to degree completion. If you have taken a second language at the 30 level in High School, register in the 200 level RDC course. Do Not Take the 100 Level! Initial level is determined by prerequisites presented. Students presenting French Language Arts 30, Français 30, or French 31 may apply for advanced placement directly into French 203. Those wanting credit for French 202 may apply to challenge the course. PHILOSOPHY Year One: 6 credits of Transferable Junior Philosophy Courses Year Two: 12 credits of Transferable, Senior Philosophy Courses. Not all Philosophy courses are offered every year. If available, recommend to enroll in: - One of PHIL 301, PHIL 321, PHIL 323 Notes: There are 21 specific senior credits required in the complete this major. Only 3 credits are available at RDC (one of PHIL 301/PHIL 321/PHIL 323). POLITICAL SCIENCE Year One: POLI 201 and 3 credits of Transferable Junior Political Science Courses (POLI 223 or POLI 283) *Students with credit in POLI 200 should not take POLI 201 Year Two: POLI 320 (full year 6 credits); POLI 308 (fall) and POLI 309 (winter); 6 additional credits of transferable Senior Political Science Courses *Must transfer POLI 308 and POLI 309 together to gain full transfer credit for U of A POL S 210 PSYCHOLOGY: MATH 30-1 OR MATH 30-2 IS REQUIRED FOR THIS MAJOR Year One: PSYC 260, PSYC 261 Year Two: - PSYC 312 OR STAT 251 and 3 credits of Senior, Transferable Psychology (see Notes) - PSYC 358 & PSYC Choose 2 of: PSYC 353, PSYC 389, PSYC 341 Notes: - If you are taking PSYC 312, be advised it is a full year course (6 credits). Math 30-1 is required for PSYC If taking STAT 251, be advised this is a 3 credit course and Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 is required. - Both PSYC 312 and STAT 251 will satisfy 3* of statistics that BA Psych Majors require. Students will still need to satisfy another 3* from CMPUT, MATH, or STAT (not including PSYC 312/STAT 251). This will most likely be completed at the University of Alberta. 5 INFORMATION ON BA CRIMINOLOGY BA CRIMINOLOGY This is not a direct entry program at UofA. There is a mixture of academic and non-academic requirements students must meet before applying ACADEMICS: To be considered for this program you must: attain a minimum grade point average of 2.7 over your past 30 transferrable credits In addition to the Academic Requirements, there are non-academic requirements that must be met. Below are some of the additional requirements that need to be completed. It is essential to visit the U of A Calendar and contact the U of A Criminology department (info located end of guide) for more info. the UofA calendar for complete requirements including additional admission requirements Two relevant letters of reference attesting to ability and personal suitability for employment in the criminal justice system. A resume of personal data, particularly volunteer or work experience in the criminal justice system. A written statement of career objectives. An interview. RECOMMENDED COURSES: Year 1: ENGL 219, ENGL 220, SOCI 260 and SOCI 261, PSYC 260 and PSYC 261, 6 credits in one Language other than English, 6 credits of Basic requirements. Year 2: SOCI 325, SOCI 327, PSYC 353, PSYC 383, Other recommended coursework: ANTH 307, FAM 315 Note: In addition, students in the Criminology program will not need to complete a typical BA minor. The Criminology program has a strong interdisciplinary second area of concentration which is a more flexible and diverse version of the typical "minor" This program also has differing application deadline dates. For more info: ANTH 307 has a pre-req of ANTH 201 or ANTH 203 Students must take SOCI 260 and SOCI 261 to get credit for SOC 100 at the University of Alberta BASIC REQUIREMENTS It is strongly advised that students complete the following requirements in the first two years of their program Junior English (ENGL)/Writing Studies (WRS) (6 credits) At RDC, ENGL 219 (3)/ENGL 220 (3) (we do not offer any WRS courses). Students who have been granted advanced placement may be eligible to substitute any English course that transfers to the U of A at the 200-level or higher for the core requirement. Language Other Than English (LOE) (6 credits in one language) RDC offers instruction in both French and Spanish. Many other languages are offered at the U of A. Students who decide to take a LOE in which they completed the high school 30-level must take courses at the RDC 200-level. Students who have completed their secondary education in a LOE will be permitted to take 6 credits in options in lieu of the LOE core. Students presenting French Language Arts 30, Français 30 or French 31 may apply of advanced placement directly into FREN 203. Those wanting credit for FREN 202 may apply to challenge the course. The Study of Science (6 credits) Select courses offered by the Faculty of Science or recognized by the Faculty of Science as Science courses. RDC offers courses in the following areas: ASTR, BIOC, BIOL (NOT BIOL 209), CHEM, CMPT (not 261), GENE, GEOG (only 230 and/or 231), MICR, MATH, PHYS, PSYC (only 260, 312, 368, 375, and/or 377), STAT, ZOOL. The courses you choose at RDC must transfer to the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. Make note of the pre-requisites needed for Science courses. 6 Breadth and Diversity (18 credits) Select 6 credits from each of the categories below. Group 1 Creative Processes in the Arts (6 credits) Select courses from the following areas available at RDC: ART, DRAM, MUSI, ENGL (must transfer as WRITE courses) 377, 378, 379 Group 2 Cultures and Cultural Products (6 credits) Select courses from the following areas available at RDC: SR ENGL, FILM, HIST, CLAS, PHIL. Group 3 Social Systems and Interactions (6 credits) Select courses from the following areas available at RDC: ANTH, GEOG (only GEOG 250 and/or 251), ECON, INTD 301, POLI, PSYC (only 261, 312, 341, 347, 353, 383, 389), SOCI. Notes: 1. PSYC 312 will fulfill 3 credits of Science and 3 credits of Group 3 Social Systems and Interactions. 2. Psychology or Sociology majors should not choose STAT 251 as a Basic requirement nor as an option. 3. Courses taken in the Major field may also count towards Basic Requirements. If you are using a course to cover both a major and a basic requirement, make sure you take an additional open option in order to replace credits. (i.e., PSYC 260 can work for both your major and science requirement, but will still count for only 3* total in your degree). No one course may meet more than one of the basic requirements. Basically, any course, whether or not it meets multiple requirements, counts only once in the total credits required for the degree. OPTIONS: Students are responsible for checking the Alberta Transfer Guide to ensure that the specific options selected (e.g. ANTH 200) are transferable to University. The Alberta Transfer Guide can be accessed on-line at Some of the classes listed below may be restricted (i.e. only students in a certain program can access them). Check the Red Deer College timetable for further information. Junior courses are those that transfer to the University 1xx or are numbered from in the Transfer Guide. 7 DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (for more info, follow the link below): 1. First Year: Within the first 30 credits, students should complete courses from the basic program requirements (junior level recommended) including the required 6 credits Junior English. Students should enroll, if possible, in a course in the Major Subject in the first year. Students are also encouraged to obtain required prerequisite courses early in the program. 2. Basic Requirements: The Basic Requirements (36 credits) are designed to provide the foundation of a liberal arts education. It is strongly advised that students complete the Basic Requirements within the first two years of their program. Note: No one course may meet more than one of the Basic Requirements. Senior courses in the area of the major or minor which meet the basic requirements are also counted toward the major or minor requirements. 3. Major: Students must declare either a single or a double major. Students who declare a single major must also complete a minor. Students who declare a double major are not permitted to declare a minor. Refer to the University of Alberta calendar for a list of subjects which may be declared as majors in the BA ( Each major must include a minimum of 30 credits to a maximum of 48 credits at the senior level (U of A s 200-level and above) (i.e. additional courses in the major may not be taken as options). Where a double major is declared, the same Faculty minimums and maximums apply in both majors. A minimum of 15 credits at the senior level toward the major must be completed with coursework offered by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. Senior-level courses in the major subject taken as part of the basic program requirements must also count toward the major. 4. Minor: Students who have declared a single major must also declare a minor. Refer to the University of Alberta calendar for a list of subjects which may be declared as minors in the BA. A minor must include minimum of 12 credits to a maximum of 42 credits at the senior level in an approved subject outside the single major. The maximum units of course weight may not be exceeded (i.e. additional courses in the minor may not be taken as options). For Arts minors, a minimum of 6 credits at the senior level must be satisfied with coursework offered by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta and for Science minors, a minimum of 9 credits at the senior level must be satisfied with course work offered by the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta. Senior-level courses in the minor, taken as part of the basic requirements, must also be counted toward the minor. In addition to the Arts disciplines (refer to the University of Alberta calendar) students may also select as their minor an area or discipline from the Faculty of Science (refer to the University of Alberta calendar 43.3(4) for a complete list and further, specific information, or this link: 5. Junior courses: Maximum of 48 credits at the junior level are permitted for credit to the program. Students should complete 30 credits at the junior level before registering in senior-level courses. At the University of Alberta, Junior level courses (Jr.) are courses numbered from ; Senior level courses (Sr.) are courses numbered 200 and above. Combined Majors in Languages other than English: Apart from the option to declare a double major and no minor, students may opt instead to select two related languages which can be combined as their major subject; a valid minor is still required when this option is selected. Students selecting a combined language major should take two languages other than English in the first year, deferring any other basic requirements except the Junior English to do so. Open Options: A maximum of 18 credits may be taken outside the Faculties of Arts and Science as long as these courses do not duplicate courses already offered by these two faculties. Refer to the University of Alberta Calendar for further details. ADMISSION AND TRANSFER INFORMATION PROGRAM INFORMATION LENGTH OF DEGREE: 120 credits in total TRANSFER CREDIT: 60 credits can be completed at RDC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS HIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS - ELA Four courses from Group A, B, and/or C. Only one course maximum may be presented from Group B. - Math 30-2 can be used for admission purposes, however, Math 30-1 is required for certain disciplines (PSYC, ECON) AGPA CALCULATION (admission grade point average) AGPA is calculated based on all university transferable work completed in your most recent two terms of study, if those terms contain 24 credits. If your most recent two terms do not contain 24 credits, all the work in the next most recent term(s) of study are included until a minimum of 24 credits are reached. For applicants who have attempted less than 24 credits of transferable course work, the AGPA is based on all university transfer credits earned/attempted. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM GRADE REQUIRED: C- MAXIMUM JUNIOR LEVEL COURSES : 48 Credits GPA REQUIRED TO APPLY 2.00 GPA UNIVERSITY RULES REPEAT COURSES/COURSE ATTEMPTS Students are allowed 2 attempts per course --A Withdraw (WD) does count as an attempt. If the student repeats a course in which they already have a transferable grade (C- or better), only the first passing grade will be used in calculating admission SPRING COURSES Students taking a spring course (in the year of transfer) should contact the University of Alberta undergraduate office regarding the document deadline via at arts.undergrad@ualberta.ca including their full name and ID number (this is to ensure the U of A knows not to refuse your admission). 9 ACADEMIC STANDING Required to Withdraw Applicants who have previously been required to withdraw, or equivalent by the standards of the Faculty of Arts, only once from any postsecondary institutions (other than the University of Alberta) may be considered for readmission. Following the requirement to withdraw, applicants in this category must either: o Successfully complete 24 credits elsewhere transferable to the Faculty of Arts with a o competitive AGPA (minimum 2.0) or Successfully complete 18 credits elsewhere transferable to the Faculty of Arts with an AGPA of at least 2.7 (Students are not permitted to repeat courses previously passed at the University of Alberta or any other institution) Applicants whose previous postsecondary records indicate they have been required to withdraw more than once, or equivalent by the standards of the Faculty of Arts, will be considered for admission after 5 years have passed, or after 3 years have passed and applicants have also o o Successfully complete 24 credits elsewhere transferable to the Faculty of Arts with a competitive AGPA (minimum 2.0) or Successfully complete 18 credits elsewhere transferable to the Faculty of Arts with an AGPA of at least 2.7 (Students are not permitted to repeat courses previously passed at the University of Alberta or any other institution) All applicants whose previous post-secondary records indicate they have been required to withdraw and/or failed probation more than twice (or equivalent by the standards of the Faculty of Arts see 42.6(2) for details) will not be considered for admission.
