16 ROMANTIC ITALY Venice, or better, the Most Serene Republic of Venice, through shrewed diplomacy and savvy dealings, prospered for over one thousand years, dominating commerce and ruling over the Adriatic and most of the eastern Mediterranean. Embellished by its ruling elite over the centuries, still today Venice is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world and entered into the list of Unesco s Patrimony of Humanity for the incredible architecture of its palaces, churches, mausoleums. Not by chance, Venice is, after Rome, the second italian historical city with the highest tourism flow, mostly from foreign countries. Palazzo Ducale A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the Doge s Palace is an impressive structure composed of layers of building elements and ornamentation, from its 14th and 15th century original foundations to the significant Renaissance and opulent Mannerist adjunctions. The structure is made up of three large blocks, incorporating previous constructions. The wing towards the St. Mark s Basin is the oldest, rebuilt from 1340 onwards. The wing towards St. Mark s Square was built in its present form from 1424 onwards. The canal-side wing, housing the Doge s apartments and many government offices, dates from the Renaissance and was built between 1483 and The origins. The first Doges The first stable settlements in the lagoon probably came just after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476). Gradually, these became more established and are considered as outposts of the Byzantine Empire. It was probably with the approval of the Byzantine emperor that, in the 7th century, the figure of a Venetian Doge was instituted to oversee the autonomous administration of local affairs. At the beginning of the 9th century, Venice enjoyed a reasonable level of independence. In 810, Doge Angelo Partecipazio moved the seat of government from the island of Malamocco to the area of Rivoalto (the present-day Rialto), when it was decided the Palazzo Ducale should be built, however, no trace remains of that 9th century building. The Old Castle (10th-11th century) It is probable that the Palazzo Ducale, being protected by a canal, stout walls and massive corner towers, was an agglomeration of different buildings destined to serve various purposes. Reached by a large fortified gateway where the Porta della Carta now stands, the buildings within these walls housed public offices, courtrooms, prisons, the Doge s apartments, stables, armories, and other facilities.

17 A River of Art! Places to See and Visit The Venetian Villas of the Brenta Canal. Venetian Villas...or...the magic of classicism, between architecture, art and landscape... Andrea Palladio, Vincenzo Scamozzi, Giuseppe Jappelli, Giambattista Tiepolo, are just a few of the many illustrious architects or artists who contributed to make this a fascinating area for all art lovers. Villa Widmann Foscari Villa Widmann Foscari, called... La Malcontenta According to one of the legends, the name Malcontenta (which means... the unhappy one ) was given to the Widmann Foscari Villa and the surrounding area and is possibly derived from a feeling of contempt that peasants of the area held, since their fields were frequently inundated by the rivers and canals which backed up during works ordered by Venice. Another legend speaks of a certain wife of one of the Foscari, a powerful Venetian family, who was relegated to live in the villa apparently to atone for her infidelity. The villa, built by Palladio in 1560 on the request of both Nicolo and Alvise Foscari is considered to be a jewel of late Venetian Baroque style. Palladio himself desrcribed this work in the essay Four Architectural Books and this villa represents a certain uniqueness amongst his works. Subsequently the villa was enlarged and reached it s present shape in the mid 1700s after the Widman family acquired it and then remodeled it in French Rococo - style, which was much in vogue at that time. During the re-modeling work, the central body of the villa was transformed to be a perfect place for parties, banquets and the playing of all manner of games while guests delighting in fine food and drink.

18 A River of Art! Places to See and Visit The Venetian Villas of the Brenta Canal. Venetian Villas...or...the magic of classicism, between architecture, art and landscape... The Barchesse of Villa Valmarana at Malcontenta The entire complex of this villa was built in the 1600s by the Valmarana family who, on each side of the villa, added two L shaped constructions, called Barchesse which were characterized by an imposing colonnade. During the following centuries, the entire ground floor deteriorated to become first a wine cellar, housing quarters for peasants and a granary. Ultimately, during the 1800s, the villa was...blown up to avoid having to pay the new luxury tax. The foresteria (guest quarters) is the only building open to the public where it is still possible to see the original furnishings and several frescoes by Michelangelo Schiavoni, who was a famous artist in the 1700s. These beautiful frescoes have been brought back to life during the 1960s by a loving restoration conducted by the owner of the villa at that time. One of the best pieces can be seen on the ceiling of the central hall, where, in typical Tiepolo-style, the glory of the Valmarana family is depicted, surrounded by mythological figures along with pages and dames who appear to look down on the observer from an illusionary balustrade. Villa Pisani at the City of Stra Villa Pisani is without question considered to be the queen of the Brenta Canal villas. It represents the zenith of 18 th century architecture during which the height of Baroque meets classic styles, just like was seen in regal palaces such as Versailles or Caserta. Construction began in the early 1700s and was commissioned by the noblemen Alvise and Almoro Pisani. Inside the the villa, most of the 114 rooms are richly decorated with statues and also the originalfurnishings. The beautiful frescoes were done by the most famous artists of the time: Guarana, Amigoni, Urbani, Diziani and the most famous was Giambattista Tiepolo himself. Many famous people came to Villa Pisani: from Napoleon who acquired the Villa in 1807 to Mussolini and Hitler who met each other for the first time here at the villa in 1934.

20 ROMANTIC ITALY VENEZIA VENETO 1st day Arrival and transfer from airport to hotel The Brenta Villas The area near the canal is characterized by the presence of many aristocratic villas, primarily built between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries which were erected by the numerous patrician families of Venice. In those times this area was accessible only by water, since there was no system of roads until later. The Venetian noblity reached their villas by traveling on boats called a Burchiello which were pulled from the banks by men, oxen or horses. These were luxurious and spacious vessels which often featured verandahs. Instead, cargo was pulled by barges called Burci. To this very day, a cruise along the Brenta Canal is an attractive and relaxing sightseeing activity. 2nd day 4 nights 5 days Morning excursion to Murano+ Burano Afternoon excursion in a gondola Free Entrance to the Casino di Venezia free Venice, or better, the Most Serene Republic of Venice, through shrewed diplomacy and savvy dealings, prospered for over one thousand years, dominating commerce and ruling over the Adriatic and most of the eastern Mediterranean. 28 MONSELICE During September and October turn back the time at VENETO Historical documents tell us that during the year 1239, the Emperor Federico II, on his way to Padova, visited Monselice and gave order to establish a Giostra and Tournament. Today, our town s Giostra celebration brings back to life the traditional competitions of skills, strength and dexterity that characterized all medieval festivities of that time. Competitions on archery, the challenge of strength at the huge macine, the competition of speed in running, the chess tournament, the Giostra with staff-in-arm and the tournament on horseback are all typical of the Palio of Monselice. Nine are the contrade or town sections which have brought back to life the trades and skills of the territory in use during medieval times. The Contrade, according to a rigid set of rules renewed year-by-year, compete for victory in the diverse skill areas and together participate in the Historical Parade which makes display of itself along town s streets and alleys. Of particular interest is the faithful reconstruction of the big war machines like Towers, catapults, steaming hot pitch cauldrons and minor weaponry. At the Historical Parade participate over 1000 richly costumed individuals. Costumes, weapons, shops, artisans displaying their wares and skills transform Monselice for few hours and bring it back to a medieval era. 30 New Year s Eve & Italian Carnival Spend Your Holidays like the Nobility of Venice, in Splendid Villas on the Brenta Canal. The Brenta canal is the old natural path that the river Brenta followed before the Most Serene Republic of Venice decided to deviate its course and estuary from the Lagoon of Venice to the open Mediterranean Sea. Even Leonardo da Vinci was consulted for these colossal works, given his fame as a great hydraulic engineer. An impressive system of locks and movable bridges makes it possible to navigable the canal. From the very beginning, the Brenta Canal became a very important means of communication and transportation between the Venetian Lagoon and the city of Padua. The area near the canal is characterized by the presence of many aristocratic villas, primarily built between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries which were erected by the numerous patrician families of Venice. The Brenta Canal is part of a complex system of rivers and canals which, since ancient times, connected many towns and cities in the region of Veneto with Venice s lagoon. In 1574, the future king of France, Henry III, sailed along the canal after his meeting with the Doge of Venice from whom he had obtained a loan of 100 thousand scudi...with zero interest, which was quite a feat. He attracted a crowd of well-wishers as he departed Venice and along the canal too, he received a triumphal welcome and each year since then, a picturesque retinue of barges and vessels re-enact that event. For your convenience, should you reach it at lunch time, there s a casual and good trattoria often frequented by the local workmen. Another 20 minutes of navigation and you will reach Malcontenta. Just before the bridge, on the right, you ll find a public mooring. Once you pass the rotating Malcontenta bridge, on your left, you will see the beautiful Villa Foscari, better known as La Malcontenta, designed and built by Andrea Palladio (open to visitors only during certain days and times or with a reserved-in-advance appointment). Next on your fascinating voyage is Villa Querini Stampalia on your left, and, on your right, Villa Priuli. An additional 20 minutes and you will have reached Oriago, in the vicinity of the second rotating bridge. During the next 6 kilometers prior to reaching Mira Porte (about 40 minutes more of navigating time), you will pass through two more rotating bridges while admiring other important Villas on the side of the canal. On the left, the Mocenigo Palace and Gradenigo Palace, then Villa Valmarana. And more to see on the right are the Moscheni Casino, Villa Widmann-Scheriman and others. Before you reach Mira Porte lock, you will find a nice pontoon where you can moor your boat. Otherwise, additional ones are to be found once you pass through the lock, on the right side. Between Mira and Dolo, (about 30 more minutes of navigating time),there are three more movable bridges and yet even more beautiful villas. You will find another comfortable mooring at Dolo, just after the lock, on the right side. Before leaving, don t forget to visit the charming old water mill. Stra is your next town, 12 kilometers away. Here you will have to decide if you d like to settle in for the night at Dolo, or if instead, you wish to continue all the way to Stra. From this point on, the continuation of the trip requires coordination of program and timing with the operators of the movable bridges. Times of operations are more or less the same as for the locks.

48 IMPORTANT INFORMATION As you reach the historic and splendid Villa Pisani you will find a mooring. Don t forget to visit this one, as it s one of the most famous in all of Veneto. As you pass the lock at Stra, keep your boat on the right as you will cross to leave the Brenta to enter the Piovego Canal. In about 40 minutes you ll reach and pass through the Noventa Padovana lock. Shortly afterwards, on your right, you will see the great Villa Giustinian. As you continue along the canal and underneath several bridges you will reach the intersection with the San Gregorio canal but continue on to reach, (in about 50 additional minutes), the dramwetic walls of the Padua Fortress. You are entering the heart of this historic and cultured city, while continuing through a couple of bends to finally reach the river port of Porta Portello. Here you will be able to dock and set out to experience and explore this fantastic place on foot. Should you desire to dock instead at a more interesting mooring point, further along on the canal, after having gone under four bridges, you will find the Porte Contarine dock. Padua is certainly deserving of at minimum, a 24 hour stop. Among the many musts of Padua, the incredible Scrovegni Chapel (aka Arena Chapel) with splendid frescos done in the early 1300s by Giotto, who is considered to be the father of the Renaissance. 50 The Venetian lagoon (Venice and the Venetian Lagoon have been entered into The UNESCO list of the sights patrimony of humanity) The lagoon of Venice, approx. 550 square kilometers large, is about 6000 years old. With the end of the glacial era, sediments deposited by the Brenta and Piave rivers created an area of flats and bogs. During the following centuries, phenomena of soil lowering began (and still continues), coupled with the raising of the sea level. The result of this water level rising has been the inevitable flooding of a large part of the existing flatlands, with the exclusion of a few, more elevated areas. Of the entire lagoon, only 5% of it is comprised of abovewater land the islands- while 20% of the lagoon is covered by the so called barene, shoals, or sandy areas rising just above the water line and habitat to a vegetation particularly resilient to salt water. All the lagoon is crisscrossed by canals dug deeper than the surrounding water area and marked by the bricole, wooden poles which aid the navigation and help prevent the running aground of boats and vessels. The lagoon is separated by open sea by the lidi, long and narrow natural sandy berms, sometimes reinforced by man-made projects. Communication with the Adriatic sea is via three openings: Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia. The lagoon is also affected by the ebb and flow phenomena of the tides, which reverse themselves every six hours. Had it not been for man s intervention, the Venetian lagoon would have gradually been chocked-up by the continuous deposit of sediments brought by the rivers, the sole responsible, albeit indirecly, of it s creation. The Venetians had discovered long ago the seriousness of this problem and had deployed the best techniques of hydrolic engineering available at the time, one of which consisted in deviating the riverbeds bringing their estuaries outside the lagoon, into open sea.

52 An excursion of one or more days navigating the Venetian lagoon to the discovery of the it s island, from the most famous and known to some of the less known and characteristic with the ancient vineyards. THE LOST VINEYARDS OF VENICE and of the Venetian lagoon, remind us, through several survived toponyms, the importance that this plant held for it s citizens. For example, the great venetian monastery of San Francesco della Vigna had origins from a vineyard. Documents show that, in the year 1253, a certain Marco Ziani bequeated to the franciscan friars the large vineyard ofhis family in addition to a small church. Campiello della vigna on the island of San Pietro in Castello is another. The island of Le Vignole, also called Sette Vigne which today is that long and narrow sandy area between Sant Erasmo and the Lido, was in past centuries an area dedicated to the cultivation of this plant. As we can see, even in this case, toponyms are like beacons which guide us to the origin of a place by virtue of it s original name. Along with the vast cultivated areas, in small orchards, and herb gardens of central Venice, vinyards were carefully tended to, both for table grapes as well as for wine-making purposes. The existence and great importance attributed to the vinyards can also be found inside documents of the historical Venetian archives, among last wills, contracts of sales, foreclosures and various court decrees. From these ancient documents we can understand the proportions, numbers and extension of these vinyards during past centuries, especially when compared with the cramped quarters of today s Venice. This green side of Venice was able to survive until the end of the 1800s when it started to decline due to rapid urbanization. Fortunately, in small areas, these ancient vinyards still survive thanks to the loving hands of a few dedicated vintners. You will be one of the lucky ones to be able to savor the juice of ancient plants which survived the erosion of modern times! We are able to organize tastings of these new and ancient wines along with banquets centered around historical recipes of the Venetian lagoon all the while describing their origins and details. (In addition, at time of your booking and payment, we will furnish you with very informative pamphlets covering anecdotes, curiosities, descriptions of events and facts not available to the general public) 2-night accommodation at a historical Venetian Villa of the Riviera del Brenta, in a double room, with breakfast and room taxes included. 1 full day excursion navigating the Venetian Lagoon, to visit the islands, from the most famous to some of the lesser known ones. (minimum 6 persons) 1 fish-based lunch in a typical Venetian bacaro (beverages not included) Rates starting from Euros 345 per person sharing a double room.

59 BIKYNG :POLSINE & PO DELTA Veneto in bicicletta With more than 1000 kilometers of bicycle paths, Veneto is ready to be discovered through this slow and very much in style these days. Come savor the traditions, gastronomy, local cultures while slowly bicycling through our territory. We can design and orchestrate itineraries according to your length of time, needs or necessities. Each and every participating lodging structure offers you the opportunity to rent bicycles if requested well in advance. Additionally, detailed maps of the territory! Polesine is set between the Adige and the Po rivers but in its territory there are other waterways which characterize this land making it a unique site. In addition to the two main rivers, there are the Tartaro-Canalbianco, the Adigetto, branch of the Adige, the Ceresolo, an artificial canal used for irrigation along 50 Km and a thick web of drainage canals. No land like the Polesine has been shaped by rivers; they are the indisputable protagonists of its history and the only means of communication until the Industrial Revolution and it is thanks to them that many civilizations, from the Bronze Age to the Venetian Republic, were born. Due to subsidence, large part of the land is today under sea level, protected by strong banks that go along the Po and Adige rivers towards the Adriatic Sea. Nobody could imagine that this fragile equilibrium between land and sea is maintained by remarkable drainage works and defensive structures without which, the land would have been completely submerged. These works are realized by the reclamation consortiums that have built and installed draining pumps to unload water into the receptors which put it into the sea. This fascinating story of man fighting to reclaim land from water started in the Etruscan Age and developed through the centuries thanks to the Benedettini, Estensi and Venetians. To discover it, just visit some of the examples of industrial archeology transformed into museums such as the draining pump of Cà Vendramin in the Taglio di Po area or the Septem Mària Museum of Adria. In Polesine therefore, it is the river which is the main protagonist, to be discovered on foot, by bike, by boat, by horse. Starting from the Adriatic Sea one may go up the river Po to Cremona, or use the network of the hydrographic basin of Fissero-Tartaro-Canalbianco; the navigable Polesine waterways represent an important opportunity for those who want to live the Polesine to the full, capturing its most authentic spirit. Thanks to the many river moorings one may also visit small riverside villages and maybe stop for a picnic in one of the equipped flood plains. The many pedestrian-cycling itineraries along the embankment road offer visitors the opportunity to admire breathtaking landscapes, in particular, at sunset when the red-painted skyline joins the light blue of the water, a unique image not to be found elsewhere.sea

60 BIKYNG :POLSINE & PO DELTA When the branch of the Po di Venezia forks in two, you follow the dyke of the Po di Tolle almost until its mouth where you come to Scardovari, a fishing village which has a large fish market. After passing through Bonelli, a town of traditional houses with large cube-shaped chimneys, you come to the beach. Cycling along the road that skirts the Scardovari lagoon, you will be accompanied by seagulls, oyster catchers, terns and dabchicks. The cane thickets of the mud flats and sandbanks at the mouth of the river give way to the "cavane" (water gardens) of the lagoon where fishermen breed shellfish and mussels which are one of the specialities of the Polesine. It is worth stopping off at the Nature reserve of Ca' Mello to see the Visitors' Centre which provides information about the environment, agriculture and fishing in the Po Delta. You proceed until you reach the area known as Val Bonello Biotope. The return route follows the left dyke of the Po di Donzella, passing through the hamlets of Cassella, Gnocca and Donzella before an easy return journey to the point of departure. La strada delle valli The second leg of this waterside itinerary is a full immersion into the Natural Park of the Po Delta. You can depart from Adria following the levee of the Canalbianco, a waterway that is still used by commercial and tourist vessels, until you reach Porto Viro. Here, you can get on the levee of the Po (1)near the impressive boat-lift system that provides connections to the main distributary of the river (Po di Venezia) with the Po di Levante. After passing by the last houses in Adria, an area in which some important paleological dunes can be found, the landscape becomes even more extraordinary: from atop the levee you can follow the water s tranquil flow and to the other side, look out over the endless stretches of farmland and fields of grain dotted with small, humble farmhouses. In Villaregia, the farmland gives way to fishing valleys in the Venetian Lagoon. The route continues on down a lovely country bike trail that passes near some drainage structures, displaying he extensive construction projects begun in the early 1900s. The many drainage structures still ensure secure functioning for the water system, allowing the drainage canals to carry water back to the sea. The route will be interrupted in Porto Levante where the boat + bike service will bring you across to the opposite bank near Albarella. The atmosphere is still unique and isolated here, where noises are hushed, the light is reflected by the water, and the sea breeze carries an intense salty fragrance. This enchanting scenery lingers as you head down the paved Via delle Valli passing through the valleys of Valle Sagreda and Valle Capitania. Amidst these wetlands, it is common to see colonies of pink flamingos (2). You re almost at the Adige now, but before crossing over it, you can follow its course up to the mouth, reaching the beaches of Rosolina Mare and the impressive botanical garden of Porto Caleri (3). Once you cross the river, you can go into Dogado, or rather, the land of the doges. The first sign of this change is the Bosco Nordio, a lovely old-growth forest on the plains surrounding fields where radicchio di Chioggia is harvested. The last bridge, passing over the Brenta, will bring you to the city bordering the Lusenzo Lagoon.

62 HORSE RIDING in The Natural Park of the Po Delta There is much to consider when thinking of a horse riding holiday in Italy with the Alps forming its northern border and mile after mile of coastline, there are plenty of beautiful places to explore. Italy is also a hugely cultural country and there are endless possibilities for combining an Italian riding vacation with some sightseeing. The Po Delta ( Polesine,Veneto, near Venice) is the most scenic stretch of land between the Po and the Adige. A large part of the province is traversed by rivers and canals, forming a unique and charming landscape. The Po Delta itself is one of the largest wetlands in Europe and is the ideal location for holidaymakers seeking relaxation and delightful tours off the main tourist routes. 69 Deep-sea fishing The Adriatic sea has been likened to Mexico s Sea of Cortez because like his western counterpart, the Adriatic is enclosed by the italian peninsula and the ex- Yogoslavian s coast. This huge 430 miles wide basin is comprised of two principal fishing areas: The North Adriatic, from Venice to Porto San Giorgio which has a long and narrow sandy shore and the Central Adriatic from Porto San Giorgio to Santa Maria di Leuca, on the southern tip of Puglia which has a rocky coastline interspersed with some white sandy areas. The principal interest for sport fishing enthusiasts is the giant red tuna, although equal enthusiasm exists for verdesca fox shark, white tuna, mackerels, and bass. The red tuna has been the first species which attracted the interest of local fishermen, originally only for market reasons, way earlier than it became a true sport. According to scholars, red tuna has been traced to populate these waters for over 4000 years. It has been documented that the ancient Phoenicians had developed rudimental fishing nets to trap these fish. The construction of these traps in the Mediterranean still exist in today s Sicily. The first documented capture of a giant red tuna with pole and line in the Adriatic sea has taken place in the vicinity of the mouth of the River Po in That event marked the starting point of a sport which today attracts enthusiasts from Italy and all over the world. Schools of tunas of just about all sizes have been sighted along the entire peninsula. Beginning with 1980 and up until the first years of the 1990s, hundreds of giant tunas have been captured under the Game FishAssociation (IGFA) which follows both the international and italian regulations of this sport. (Italy allows only ONE red tuna hauled on board per day per boat, exception made during official fishing tournaments). During late spring, red tunas begin their migration after having deposed their eggs in the fresh waters of the Aegean and Ionian seas. Most giant red tuna fish remain stationary in the less-deep North Adriatic waters until the beginning of Autumn when this specie migrates south toward the oriental Mediterranean, following the warm stream of current and return to the Adriatic in late Autumn. The true fishing season for giant red tuna is between June and November with July, August and September being the most sought-after by enthusiasts. At the season s onset, these giants feeding area is about 30 miles offshore from Chioggia, Albarella, Porto Garibaldi, Porto Levante, Rimini and Pesaro. All of the North Adriatic is characterized by shallow waters (no more than 90 meters of depth). A point to remember is that all of the fishing boats equipped for this sport are small, fast and outfitted with the fisherman s chair on the bow to give the skipper the ability to follow the fish during it s long and shallow trailingin addition to the giant red tuna - which is now subject to controlled limitations deep sea fishing enthusiasts can hunt for mackerel, sugarelli and, from June to November, palamiti, small tuna, lampughe and ricciole. During the winter months it is possible to fish over sanken boats, for cod fish, crabs and lobsters. Porto Levante Jumped to deep-sea fishing s notoriety during the 1990s, Porto Levante is considered today the best known starting place for this ever popular sport. The area in front of the Po river delta is particularly favored by the giant red tuna, in addition of course, to mackerels, palamite, lampughe, and other species, among which, the leccia, a predator fish which is frequently found in the proximity of rivers mouths or at the entrace to lagoons. Not to be forgotten, the Sacca degli Scardovari like the Po river and its lagoons are renowned for branzino and sea bream fishing. porto Levante offers complete boat rental and equipment service for deep-sea fishing..

71 The Po Delta ( Polesine,Veneto, near Venice) is the most scenic stretch of land between the Po and the Adige. A large part of the province is traversed by rivers and canals, forming a unique and charming landscape. The Po Delta itself is one of the largest wetlands in Europe and is the ideal location for holidaymakers seeking relaxation and delightful tours off the main tourist routes. The Po Delta is an area of extraordinary natural, historical, and geological interest. Seven river branches open like a fan and form the so-called "Active Delta", rich in different environments each of them characterized by its own flora and fauna and changing in aspect season after season. It is almost impossible to bike in Delta del Po and not experience fantastic food and wine. The Delta people are famed for their fresh and tasty home cooking, accompanied by delicious local wines. Delta really is a gastronomic delight!+ Many poets, writers and directors have told of its wild beauty; its green oasis, narrow beaches, pools of water which reflect the sky have been immortalized in the canvases of great artists moved by so much poetry. The mystery of the uncertain horizon accompanied by birds song bring the visitor to a land of peace and quiet they are unable to forget. This is the Po Delta, a wetland of international importance and one of the most important natural parks in Italy established by a regional law in The best way to visit and appreciate it is by walking or going by bike along the embankments of its branches or by taking a boat trip among the dense reed thickets of the estuary mouths to observe herons, wild ducks, sheldrakes, grebes, sterns and many other species that live in these tongues of land. Among the many testimonies of the ancient floodplain, the Giardino Botanico of Porto Caleri ("Botanical Garden") is worth a visit. It includes 44 hectares of woodland, dunes, beaches and lagoons and occupies the extreme offshoot of coast of Rosolina. Not forgetting the beautiful floodplain of Cà Pisani located in the Po di Maistra or the oasis of Cà Mello along a lost branch of the Po that throws itself into the Sacco di Scardovari, one of the most charming places of the Delta, with its long riverbank road which offers visitors extraordinary views and glimpses of rare beauty over the splendid lagoon. Proceeding towards the hinterland one may see the traces that mans battle for survival has left through the centuries; great rural courts, immense expanses of cultivated fields, paddy fields, the ancient draining pump, bridges, navigation locks, fishing valleys, canals. A particular, unique world, rich in detail, in which it is possible to enter leaving stress and noise behind, to be overwhelmed by an atmosphere that is refreshing and uplifting. In the Po Delta one has a privileged relationship with nature and becomes part of the magic. The Po Delta represents a unique humid environment where fresh and brackish water, downstream, inlets and lagoons follow one another, making the Delta a rare and beautiful place. There are 7 lagoons in the Po Delta: Caleri, Vallona, Barbamarco, Batteria, Burcio, Basson and Bonelli Levante. There are 2 inlets: the inlet of Canarin and the inlet of Scardovari which is the most important brackish water zone in the Polesine Delta. Mussels and clams are cultivated here and all types of fishing are practised. In a territory, where environment and nature offer visitors special opportunities, wonderful places, many areas of naturalistic interest, it is well-worth visiting the natural oasis which are conservation areas for their naturalistic and environmental importance, where many protected species live. The Donzella ring. The dykes are higher than the houses, there is a pleasant sea breeze and a soft light: these are the impressions you get as you visit Ca' Tiepolo a Porto Tolle, the starting-point of the trip through the heart of the Po Delta. After leaving the last houses of the town, you climb up the right dyke of the Po di Venezia, the main branch of the river, and continue until you reach Tolle.

72 Our excursions to discover the Po Delta From Po della Donzella to love s island DURATION: approximately 2-3 hours EMBARKATION POINT: Ca Tiepolo or Pila Po di Maistra and Golena Ca Pisani The so called Po di Maistra is the smallest arm of the river in the Delta. It is also the most suggestive and untouched. With our special-built flat-bottom barges, we can navigate inside areas of the Po di Maistra, inside lagoons and reefs with shallow draft to reach the Adriatic sea. DURATION: approximately 2 hours EMBARKATION POINT: Ca Tiepolo For those clients who request it, is possible to rent bycicles to complete this interesting excursion, pedaling along the picturesque Via delle Valli which runs along the river berms flanking fishing lagoons and allows to reach some idrovore now interesting pieces of industrial archaeology. Otherwise, crossing the boat bridge, reaching the Scanno di Boccasette. Le Bocche del Po di Pila: la grande foce The Bocche of Po di Pila : the grand estuary. We navigate along the principal branch of the river in the Park: the Po of Venice which, before reaching the sea, splits itself into three branches:

73 Busa di Tramontana, Busa Dritta and Busa di Scirocco. From the observation deck of our boat it is possible to admire the evolution of the fluvial landscape: from the verdant golene like the ones of Oasi Volta Vaccari to the impenetrable cane reefs, to reach the estuary area. Here, were river and sea meet, live and nest several birds species. Scano Boa, between lagoons and cane reefs This itinerary revolves around a small area of the estuary of the Po di Pila and of the Busa di Tramontana to reach the Batteria island. Since 1977 a nature reserve, Batteria is now uninhabited. Along the itinerary we will see remnants fortifications from WWII and old farming warehouses. This area is also an important habitat for several acquatic birds. We step on the island at Scano to visit the old fishermen s reef housings, unique and the last to be found of its kind. As we resume our navigation, across the lagoon we will reach the area called Pezze once rice fields now preferred nesting grounds for rare bird species. We return to Pila flanking the Busa di Scirocco. DURATION: approximately 2 hours EMBARKATION POINT: Pila The Lagoons around Po di Tolle area Starting from the beach at Barricata we will navigate along the Po di Tolle branch toward the Busa di Bastimento where once a busy ferry connected land to the island. Passing by Scardovari and the dike built to contrast the in-flow of ties we will enter into the cane reefs and from there to reach the Sacca del Canarin, considered by nature lovers one of the most interesting areas of the Park. Alternately to this itinerary, from the same embarkment point, it is possible to reach Sacca degli Scardovari between the estuaries of Po di Tolle and Po di Gnocca branches. Navigating among the mussell ponds and ancient fishermens reef housings we will reach Marina 70 where the Adriatic sea inundated the area of Donzella island in 1966.

74 The Caleri lagoon...inside the acquatic vegetable gardens... Aboard a special flat-bottom boat we will navigate in the northernmost area of the park..the Caleri lagoon. Near the town of Rosolina, between the estuary of the Adige river and the Po di Levante, the marshy area of Caleri is home to several bird species. Woodcocks, sea swallows, red herons and others rare kinds. Economically speaking, this area is a great local resource for mussell cultivation. Here you can also see the traditional cavane or storage housings for fishermen and their boats. To complete the itinerary, a visit to the Botanical Garden of Porto Caleri is recommended where you can distinguish among 220 different herbs varieties and dozens of eco-systems. DURATION: approximately 1 and a half hour EMBARKATION POINT: Porto Caleri Po di Goro area...nature and history together. Starting from the picturesque setting of the Mesola Castle, we navigate upstream to land at San Basilio where we visit the Tourist Cultural Center and the romanic-style church. Resuming the navigation surrounded by a scenery of poplars and willow trees we reach Ca Vendramin, site of the historical water pumps. Now one of the most interesting examples of industriall archaeology, it houses the Regional Museum of land reclamation. The old steam engines which once powered those gigantic pumps have been restored and can be admired inside this most interesting and unique center. DURATION: all day EMBARKATION POINT: Mesola Boat and bicyle...a perfect combination!

Beginning with a focus on breathing rhythms, an exploration of the existing relationship between breathing, posture, agility and flexibility is restored. Here yoga students exit the frenetic rhythms of every-day life to immerse themselves into a deep listening mode of the body and movement to create a state of well-being and relaxation which is at once mental and physical. Program: 5 practice hours each day which include two yoga lessons of two hours each one in the morning and one in the afternoon and one with two meditation techniques and modes of relaxation for half an hour each. Hatha Yoga: Classic yoga, slow and meditative which requires the precise and intense study of the asana (positions) and of the breathing techniques. Adapted for those who are interested in the intense and conscious exploration of the asana to feel the slow, delicate adaptation to change of their own body, bettering posture and correcting problems related to the vertebral column and psycophysic imbalances. Hatha Yoga Flow: Classic yoga with fluid sequences of different asana (positions) connecting them in harmonious ways, coordinating both breathing and movement. Adapted for those who want to feel their own body flow inside the conscious movement, while exploring their own interior rhythm, resulting in bettered agility, coordination and flexibility. 10. 117 A FUN WEEK END VENETO A treasure hunt or...better yet...a hunt for.casanova himself! Yes, a treasure hunt where the treasure is...a person, yet not a common one in the general sense, but...a writer, politician, entrepreneur, a highly educated individual, an enthusiastic follower of music, fashion, esotheric arts, but most of all...as the whole world remembers him...as the most famous of all seductors. Yes; you have guessed right: Giacomo Casanova himself, who, at leaset for this day only, is a wanted man. You, the members of this fun group will take on the role of the terrible inquisitors, the emissaries of Sant Uffizio, the infamous institution created by the Catholic Church to search and hunt down the followers and believers of all theories reputed damaging to the catholic orthodoxy. Relaying on your ingenuity, intuition and feminine sixth sense, you will follow the traces of that incorregible Casanova among the tiny alleys, sinister palaces...while being called to solve enigms, pass tests of skills, as well as to show your knowlege of this ubiquitous person, his history, to finally chase him and...after having cornered him...arrested! Little matters that, as history reminds us, Giacomo Casanova will escape even from the terrible I Piombi prison. He is a true public enemy...or maybe...only the number one enemy of the Catholic Church. Be careful not to be seduced by his bewitching methods of seduction...and your reward will be grand! You will be divided into groups and your fun activity will be coordinated by a helper-supervisor. With the aid of a map of Venice and an itinerary to follow, step by step you will be required to answer questions on his many lives and to solve enigmas centered on his person. Indispensible element to ensure fun for everyone is your sense of camaraderie and...orientation ability. The game will reach it s climax when, upon reaching one of the many campielli, Casanova will be spotted while trying to hide among a group of tourists. Dressed in a splendid outfit of his time and moving graciously, he will be clutching in his hands the parchment decree of the lady victor who will be able to catch him! I know that I have lived because I have felt, and, feeling giving me the knowledge of my existence, I know likewise that I shall exist no more when I shall have ceased to feel. Giacomo Casanova
