2 Diploma in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapy and Counselling Supervision Welcome to Terapia s Diploma in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapy and Counselling Supervision. Our programme is unique in that it combines process and developmental theories of supervision with models adapted from play therapy, attachment theory and neuroscience. It is a generic training that is applicable to those working with adults, adolescents and children. Some of the modules are focused on supervisors who work with adolescents and children and will focus exclusively on the developmental challenges of these younger age groups. All the learning on the course is through the group processing theory via a range of experiential methods and creative techniques. The training is open to practitioners with experience in therapeutic work with clients from all age groups and particularly those with an interest in child and adolescent work. We welcome qualified psychotherapists, counsellors and members of caring professions: psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and coaches. We endeavour to provide a training opportunity to the highest professional standards. The course addresses professional, ethical and legal dilemmas specific to the child and young people psychotherapy and counselling field. About Terapia Terapia has been training Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists and Counsellors since We currently offer the following courses: Postgraduate Certificate in Adult Counselling (Duration: one year part-time); Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Child and Adolescent Counselling (may lead to BACP individual accreditation) (two years part-time); MA in Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and Counselling (may lead to UKCP registration and BACP individual accreditation) (two years part-time); MA Conversion Course (may lead to UKCP registration) (two years part-time); Diploma in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapy and Counselling Supervision (may lead to BACP and UKCP registration as a Supervisor) At Terapia we are committed to the belief that as child psychotherapists we are in a unique position of responsibility. We recognize that children are the most vulnerable part of our society. They are also the least powerful of humankind. Their emotional, spiritual, cognitive and physical wellbeing will depend on the adults around them. The inequality of power and lesser transparency of the work require that a child psychotherapist has the utmost professional and personal integrity. A supervisor who has gone through a thorough academic, experiential and practice based training, combined with an intense skills development, will be able to create a supervisory experience to facilitate a meaningful therapeutic relationship between supervisee and his/her client.

3 Terapia s approach Terapia is a uniquely integrative school. It was established in response to the growing demand for psychotherapists who are able to work with children from a much wider theoretical perspective. In contrast to most existing training programmes, which apply themselves rigidly to one particular school of thought, Terapia explores all the leading approaches to psychotherapy. Terapia is one of the first schools of its kind to offer training from this integrated vantage point. We strive to equip graduates with a range of therapeutic tools, to be able to draw from many therapeutic approaches according to the issues a child may present and to apply appropriate therapeutic intervention. At Terapia we propose a teaching model that takes the perspective of the child as an individual. We therefore define a child s healthy wellbeing as that which fulfils the child s potential within the context of his/her life and within their cultural and spiritual community. The theoretical approach applied will be one to suit the child in context and their level of development rather than the theoretical perspective of the observer or therapist. At Terapia we take the view that the most important aspect of the therapeutic work is the relationship. Therefore the ability of our students to form ethical, engaging and meaningful relationships with children and young people is of paramount importance. This can only be achieved through intense personal development with the understanding that a child psychotherapist is himself/herself the most important and powerful therapeutic tool. Any student has to be acutely aware of who they are and what they represent and to acknowledge the presence of their own prejudices, assumptions and judgments. We endeavour to facilitate a learning process where each student will find their unique style of working, which reflects their own individuality and personal qualities within a strong ethical framework. Terapia values each student s individuality, recognises their uniqueness and celebrates this diversity and difference. We ensure that this is incorporated into all aspects of the training as well as into the recruitment of tutors and students. Entry Criteria: Previous training in a field related to psychotherapy, counselling psychology, psychiatry, coaching or social work; Above training taken at the minimum of Diploma level; Minimum of three years of post-qualifying experience equivalent to 800 practice hours; Ability to undergo training at a postgraduate level of competence; Evidence of experience of professional involvement with children or adolescents in a caring capacity; Evidence of sufficient practice of supervision or: Ability to take up supervisory practice with groups and individual supervisees - a minimum of 1 group or 2 individual supervisees required at beginning of course; and Clear Enhanced DBS Check. Attributes and personal qualities required to enter the training programme: Ability to form relationships with another, particularly with children and young people, that are engaging, meaningful and respectful; Personal integrity, attunement, resilience, creativity and ability to play; Good personal and professional boundaries; Commitment to personal development; Self-reflection, including a willingness to stay with and work with difficult feelings and be prepared to recognize and work with their own issues from childhood and adolescence through personal inquiry. Ability to receive feedback and recognise own limitations;

4 An understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, including an awareness of the social and political aspects, especially the vulnerable position of the child in society, and power and powerlessness in relationships; Sensitivity to issues of diversity and equal opportunities. Awareness of prejudice and commitment to non-discriminatory practice. Training objectives: To develop an in-depth understanding of the theoretical models of supervision resulting in coherent and cohesive approach to the supervision of practicing professionals and trainees; To provide supervisors with an ethical and legal framework for working with children, young people and adults; To provide supervisors with skills required to work with supervisees and their clients of all age groups and equip them with techniques unique to child psychotherapy practice. To take into consideration supervisees learning needs as well as their training and developmental stage; To provide an understanding the professional boundaries specific to child and adolescent psychotherapy and counselling practice; To provide them with understanding of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency work in helping professions related to children and young people; To provide students with an opportunity to define their identity as the supervisor. Structure of the Course: The course takes place over eight weekends on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm (from 10 am to 5.30 pm on those marked *) on the following dates: and 13 March 2016* and 17 April 2016* and 22 May 2016* and 26 June and 11 September and 9 October and 13 November and 11 December 2016 Subjects taught on the course: theoretical and experiential training Theories of supervision - theoretical underpinnings of process, social roles and developmental models as applied in group and individual supervision; Theories of supervision as adapted from play therapy, attachment theory and neuroscience; Use of experiential methods to understand how theories relate to supervisory practice; Use of creative materials in supervision: sand tray, symbols, art materials as supervision tools for child psychotherapists; Assessment methods in working with children and young people; Ethical dilemmas in psychotherapeutic work with vulnerable client groups such as children, adolescents; Boundaries and line management issues in counselling and psychotherapy supervision; Child psychotherapists in court - court appearances and court reports; Current legislation relating to therapeutic work with children and young people; Safeguarding children/child protection issues; Tape and video recording in child psychotherapy; Working with difference; and Live supervision.

5 Course requirements: 100% attendance of the course; A minimum of 25 hours of supervisory practice with individual supervisees who work with children or young people or 25 hours of group supervision conducted with supervisees who work with children, young people or adults; Submission of one essay of six thousand words showing integration of theories and techniques and how these are applied to case material; Submission of one tape of individual supervision session; Evidence of reflection on supervision by keeping a journal throughout the course; The theoretical training is conducted in parallel with the experiential training. There is live supervision with peer assessment and tutors assessment. Staff/Student Relationships at Terapia At the core of our activities is our relationship with our students and the kind of relationships they establish between themselves. These relationships are based on our core values - the core values of therapeutic relationship, as well as the qualities of professionalism, self-knowledge and adherence to code of practice. We see it as our responsibility to teach these values to our students through modelling to ensure that these qualities are coherently and consistently embodied in Terapia as a training organisation. We therefore ensure that our training groups are small and that there is ample opportunity for relatedness between our training staff and the trainees as well as amongst members of staff. We strive to provide our trainees with the best learning facilities we can afford and that we create a sense of belonging by creating a learning community for students, trainees and employers alike. As a group of teaching staff we demand the highest professionalism from each other as well as continuous modelling of our core values to the students. In deisgning the training we have also made sure that these values are coupled with accountability and transparency in all activities Terapia undertakes. Location Terapia is based in North West London. The Supervision Training takes place at Stephens House,17 East End Road, Finchley London N3 3QE. The nearest underground station is Finchley Central on the Northern Line, High Barnet Branch. Parking is free in the area.there are bars and restaurants nearby. Tea/coffee facilities are available on site. Training standards and accreditation Terapia is an accredited Member Organisation of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP). Our main training courses are validated by Middlesex University and as a training organisation the university provides our students with its quality assurance. Terapia is also an Organisational Member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and we are bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure therein. Graduates of the Diploma in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapy and Counselling Supervision may be considered for the position of supervisor in various professional settings, as suggested by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The Course will also qualify the graduates to apply for a Registration as an Accredited Supervisor with BACP and UKCP.

12 Course Fees for 2016 Terapia is a Registered Charity (charity number ) and as such does not profit from the course fees. We make every effort to ensure that the fees correspond to the training cost.
