2 Dear Parent or Guardian: Your child is currently learning how to construct patterns in tables based on real-life situations. Here is your chance to help your child practice this important skill. In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening. Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it tomorrow. Remember, parents are a child s first teacher. 3 FINDING MISSING NUMBERS IN A PATTERN Parent Pointer Patterns are found all around us. When we look at a brick building, we notice that the bricks are arranged in a pattern. Fabric used to make clothes, curtains, and blankets has a pattern, whether it is made up of flowers, stripes, or squares. Being able to find missing numbers in a pattern is an important skill. This skill will allow your child to apply multiplication facts. Using a table to arrange objects or numbers helps us organize data to make a pattern more easily visible and understandable. Math In the Home, On the Go, and For the Fun of It DIRECTIONS: Look at the Recognizing Patterns reference sheet. Read through the definitions with your parent or guardian, then look at the example of the pattern in the table. Be sure you know what it means to find the rule to a pattern. Next, practice your skills on the Practice with Patterns page. Then, you will have the opportunity to create your own table patterns on the Creating Tables page! Talk About It After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity! 4 Recognizing Patterns A pattern is made up of a sequence of numbers, letters, or objects that repeat. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 A, B, B, C, A, B, B, C Patterns are sometimes displayed in a table. A table organizes information with columns and rows. Row Column Some patterns are based on real-life situations. Look at the table below. Number of cats Number of legs Look at how the numbers in the left column are related to the numbers in the right column. One cat has 4 legs, so 2 cats have 8 legs (2 4), 3 cats have 12 legs (3 4), and so on. 5 Practice with Patterns Directions: With your parent or guardian, write the missing numbers in the following patterns. Be sure to write the rule for each. Number of beetles Number of legs What is the rule to this pattern? Number of cars Number of wheels What is the rule to this pattern? Number of weeks Number of days What is the rule to this pattern? 6 Creating Tables Directions: Cut out the numbers from the Take a Number page. With your parent or guardian, think of five real-life situations in which a pattern can be formed. Use the numbers to arrange in the table below the pattern for each real-life situation. Write the rule for each pattern on the back of this page. For example, 1 cat has 4 legs, 2 cats have 8 legs, 3 cats have 12 legs; the rule is 4.
