Understanding Important Documents
Understanding Important Documents The Visa The visa is used only for entering the U.S. If it expires while you are here, there is no need to renew it. If you leave the U.S., your visa must be valid for re-entry. Number of entries allowed: M=multiple Expiration date Visa type: F-1 or J-1
Understanding Important Documents The I-94 Your Proof of Legal Entry into the U.S. Port-of-Entry Stamp The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer at the port of entry places a stamp in your passport, noting your immigration status as F-1 or J-1 and D/S. D/S is an abbreviation for Duration of Status, and it means you are legal to stay in the U.S. until the expiration date on your I-20 or DS-2019 and as long as you remain a full-time student. Electronic Record Print a copy of your electronic I-94 at upon arrival. Paper Form Some people may receive this paper form I-94 noting status as F-1 or J-1 and D/S. Paper I-94 forms do not have an electronic record.
Understanding Important Documents Form I-20 (F-1) Your I-20 expires on the date noted on #5. F-1 students have 60 days to depart the U.S. or transfer F-1 to a new school after this date.
Understanding Important Documents Form DS-2019 (J-1) Your DS-2019 expires on this date. J-1 students have 30 days to depart the U.S. or transfer the J-1 to a new school.
Understanding Important Documents Confirmed Class Schedule & Student ID Number (SID) Your SID is noted on your Confirmed Class Schedule This is an important number! You will frequently be asked for this number on campus. We recommend that you memorize your SID to make your UCB life much easier!
Understanding Important Documents Tips for what to do with your documents: Photocopy ALL your documents. Store originals and copies in two separate and safe locations. Carry photocopies of all your documents at all times. Take your original documents when traveling out of the area. Never throw away old original documents. You may be asked to present them in future visa interviews!
Visa Requirements
Visa Requirements How to Maintain Legal Status: 1. Keep your documents valid (not expired). 2. Update your local address in mysummer immediately: 3. Be enrolled in full-time units. 4. Maintain health insurance. Failure to maintain legal status will require your immediate departure from the U.S.
Visa Requirements Enrollment Requirements My I-20 or DS-2019 was issued by UC Berkeley. You are required to remain enrolled in full-time units. I m thinking of dropping a class or two. Stop! You must see an Advisor at Berkeley International Office for approval before dropping classes below fulltime. If you are not dropping below full-time, you do not need special permission from our office. I m a visiting F-1 or J-1 student from another U.S. school and will return to my school after Summer. You are not required to be enrolled full-time.
Visa Requirements Enrollment Requirements I entered the U.S. as a tourist. If you entered on a B-1/B-2 visa or the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA), you cannot enroll in full-time units. Berkeley International Office always recommends you enroll as a full-time F-1 student. We only advise students in F or J status. I m enrolled in more than one session. You must maintain enrollment in your first session and cannot drop all units from your first session.
Visa Requirements Session C Full-Time Enrollment Units Session C Only Sessions C & D Sessions C & E Required Units for Full-Time 6 Units 6 Units 6 Units
Visa Requirements Online Courses Summer Students are limited in the number of online courses they may take: 3 online units maximum can be counted towards full-time enrollment for Session A, B, C, or D only. 3 online units maximum can be counted towards full-time enrollment for any combination of Sessions A, B, C, D, and E. NO online units can be counted toward full-time enrollment for enrollment in Session E only. Session C Full-Time Units Session Required Units for Full-Time C Only 6 Units Sessions C & D 6 Units Sessions C & E 6 Units
Visa Requirements Health insurance is required. You are responsible for ensuring that your health coverage is sufficient. See the guidelines: summer.berkeley.edu/international/health-insurance. To purchase health insurance, visit the University Health Services website for information.
Visa Requirements Changing Sessions is not allowed without prior approval from Berkeley International Office may be a violation of your visa status. will not be approved if the change will make you enrolled in less than full time units in your first session
