Row 1: Dc in back loops only in fourth chain from hook and in each chain across. Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as first dc). Skip first dc. Dc in back loops of each stitch across. Rows 3-4: Chain 1. Sc in back loops only of each stitch across. Rows 5 and up: Continue to alternate 2 rows of dc and 2 rows of sc until desired width.

(if you want the hat a bit longer, add an extra row of dc here). Rows 13-15: ch 2, single crochet in each stitch around. Join to chain 2. Fasten off after row 15.

Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook, sc in next chain, *ch1, skip one ch, sc in next ch; repeat from *across, ch1, turn. Continue in same color. Row 2: Sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 space, *ch 1, skip next sc, sc in ch-1 space; repeat from * across. Change colors in last stitch at end of row (insert hook into last stitch, attach new color to old color as close to back of work as possible, pull new color through hook. Snip old color to 1 inch tail to be woven in later). Ch 1, turn. Row 3: Sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip next stitch, sc in ch-1 space; repeat from * across. Ch1, turn. Continue in same color. Rows 4-16: Repeat rows 2 and 3 using each color for two rows before changing. Repeat full color sequence twice and your scarf should come out to be approx.. 5 wide. Tie off yarn at end of row 16, and weave in all ends.

Cut previous color yarn to 1 inch tail. Rnd 2: Sc in space below. Ch2, work 1dc into same space, ch1, *work 2dc between next tr, ch1, rep from * around. After last ch1, sl st into top of beginning ch2. (16 groups of 2d). Change color in sl st as in rnd 1. Rnd 3: sl st backward one space going from front to back, sc in space below. Ch2, work 1dc into same space, ch1. *Work 2dc into next ch1 space, ch1. Repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of beginning ch2, changing colors as in previous rounds. (16 groups of 2dc). Rnd 4: sl st backward one space going from front to back.(single crochet in space below, ch3, work 2tr, ch2, 3tr) in same space, making a corner, ch1. *work 3dc into next ch1 space, ch1, work 3dc into next ch1 space, ch1, work 3dc into next ch1 space, ch1. Work (3tr,ch2, 3tr)into next space, ch1. Red from *around, join with sl st in top of ch3. Cut yarn with 1and ½ inch tail, pull through last loop on hook and secure tightly. Weave in all yarn tails in back. *All squares need to be 6x6 within ¼ inch in order to be joined with other squares. If your square is too small, add a row of single crochet or half double crochet around the outside or try a larger size hook. If your square is too big, try a smaller size hook. *choose fun bright colors for children (not babies)green, purple, yellow and blues work well for both boys and girls. Avoid pink, orange, white, black, brown, grey.

Rnd 4: ch 3, dc in next stitch, dc in next dc, fpdc around fpdc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, fpdc around fpdc) around. -36 (48)sts. Rnd 5: ch 3, dc in next stitch, dc in next two dc, fpdc around fpdc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, fpdc aroung fpdc) around. -45(60) sts. (*For adult size only: Rows 6-15: ch3, dc in each dc and fpdc in each fpdc around. Join to ch 3. After row 15, continue to brim instructions.) Rnd 6: ch 3, dc in next stitch, dc in next 3 dc, fpdc around fpdc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, fpdc around fpdc) around-54 sts.

Brim-Rnd 16: Turn hat so wrong side is facing you and you are working from the outside. Ch 3, dc in each st around, join. Rnd 17: ch 3, fpdc in next dc, (dc in next 2 dc, fpdc in next dc) around, dc in last dc, join. Rnds 18-19: ch 3, fpdc around fpdc, (dc in next 2 dc, fpdc in next dc) around, dc in last dc, join. Round 20: ch 1 loosely, sl st aound all stitches from last row, join in ch1. Finish off. Turn hat right side out and flip up brim. *Easier method: Use regular double crochet stitch (dc) instead of each time a front post double crochet (fpdc) is called for. Your hat will be smooth with out the ridges. *If you would like your hat to be smaller, try a smaller size hook. For a larger hat, use a larger size hook.

Rnd 3:Sl st backward one space from front to back, Ch 3(counts as dc), 2dc in same space, *ch1, 3dc in next space; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st in top of ch 3 changing colors as in rnd dc sections Rnd 4: Sl st backward one space from front to back, Ch 3(counts as dc), 2dc in same space, *ch1, 3dc in next space, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next space, ch1, 3dc in next space. Rep from * around,omitting last 3dc.Ch 1, Join with sl st in top of ch3 without changing colors. Rnd 5: Ch1 loosely, sc in each stitch around working (sc, ch2, sc) in each corner. Join with sl st to first ch1. Cut yarn with 1 and a half inch tail, pull through last loop on hook and secure tightly. Weave in all yarn tails in the back. *All squares need to be 6x6 within ¼ inch in order to be joined with other squares. If your square is too small, try working rnd 5 in hdc instead of sc,or add another round of sc, or try using larger hook. I generally figure 2 1/2 filet squares or 2 solid squares for 5 ozs. worsted weight yarn. (Don t forget to account for assembly and edging)
