2 MEET YOUR STATE OFFICERS President Runda Alamour, a North Carolina native, will be serving as the state SNCAE President this year. She is a Senior at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she is studying 6-12 Education and Literature. Runda hopes to work with local, state, and national student leaders to increase teacher preparedness, enhance the voice of young and future educators in the national conversation on education, and to increase membership and participation in our professional organization. Runda also serves as a Tutor Leader for the Asheville City Schools AVID program, where she connects future educators with 6-12 students during small group tutorials. She is passionate about students, teachers, and advocating for public education. President Elect Kelsey Parker serves as the President-Elect of SNCAE. She is currently a Sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro studying Elementary and Special Education. Kelsey developed her passion for education through two years of being in the North Carolina Teacher Cadet Program in High School that initially exposed her to the profession of teaching. Her love for teaching continuously expands and she encourages advocacy for students, teachers, and the education system in the state of North Carolina. This year, Kelsey is excited to grow as a student, leader, and teacher through her position in SNCAE. Secretary India Newberry is a native of Tampa, FL. She serves as your Secretary for the SNCAE. India is a Sophomore at Bennett College majoring in Elementary Education. She has served as Secretary for Bennett College SNCAE local chapter. India enjoys working with children and had the opportunity to work as an assistant teacher at Creative World School. When India becomes a teacher she believes that students should learn through fun and be able to teach their family and friends new content based on their learnings from their classroom. India hopes to become a Principal at an elementary school and Master in Early Childhood Education. In her free time, India enjoys hanging out with friends and making floral crowns. 2
3 Webmaster Breonna King is a native of Kinston, NC and will be serving a second year as Webmaster. She attends North Carolina Central University, where she is a Senior majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with a Concentration in Child Development and Family Relations. Breonna King has a great time working with children in the hopes of becoming a school counselor. She hopes to use her communication skills to help school children achieve greatness without the stress of having no outlets. Throughout her term as being Webmaster, she has gained a social outlet to continue to advocate for children, education, and the rights needed to teachers. She hopes to continue to advocate for SNCAE and the NCAE upon graduation. Breonna loves children, poetry, jazz, and advocating for the rights of others. One quote by Maya Angelou that she really takes hold to is, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. Breonna King hopes to help people feel great and informed through her positive posts and updates as she embarks on another journey as Webmaster NEA Representative Ashley Webber is the National Education Association (NEA) Representative for the year and a native of Atlanta, Georgia. She is a Junior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she is studying to be an Elementary Education teacher with a Special Education dual licensure. She is currently the President at her local SNCAE chapter at A&T. This is her second year on the SNCAE Executive Board. She has learned a great deal from her prior year and is ready to serve you all again. Northeast Regional Representative Kayla White is from Prattville, Alabama and serves as our Northeastern Representative. She is currently a Junior at North Carolina Wesleyan College, where she plays volleyball and is striving to obtain a double major in Elementary and Special Education. She has a passion for working with children and could not be more excited about the career she has chosen. She has struggled with dyslexia all through school and has always had teachers she admired and looked up to. She feels, as each teacher had a helping hand in overcoming her disability, now it is her turn to have the privilege to help students overcome their struggles and be the best they possibly can be. Northwest Regional Representative Stephanie Kimball is co-president of her SNCAE chapter at Winston Salem State University and the Northwest Regional Representative. She is currently working on finishing her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. In her free time, she loves to cook and bake. Stephanie is very eager to promote participation and activity within her own chapter at Winston Salem State and among the other chapters in the Northwest Region this year. 3
4 Central Regional Representative Dasha Harris is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and currently serves as the Central Regional Representative for the SNCAE. She is currently a junior at North Carolina A&T State University studying Elementary Education with a dual licensure in Special Education. While attending NCA&T, Dasha serves as Vice President of NCA&T s local SNCAE chapter, volunteers her service in local public schools, and is involved in a host of activities on campus. Western Regional Representative Allison Huskins is a Senior at UNC Asheville getting her degree in Literature with a 9-12 English Language Arts teaching licensure. She enjoys writing, reaching out to her community, and advocating for students. Allison is returning to serve a second term as the Western Regional Representative and can't wait to kick off a new year South Central Regional Representative Laura Baer is a Senior studying Elementary and Special Education as a dual major at UNC Charlotte. She currently serves as the President of SNCAE at UNCC and was recently elected to the state Executive Board as the South Central Regional Representative. She has always had a passion for teaching and becoming an educational leader. In her free time she enjoys reading, watching TV, and spending time with her fiancé, family, and friends. Triangle Regional Representative Stefanie Stewart is thrilled to be serving her first year on the SNCAE executive board as the Triangle Regional Representative. Last year she served as President of her chapter at NC State University and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of revitalizing a dormant chapter from the ground up. This year she looks forward to encouraging and building up chapters throughout the Triangle Region and taking an active part in the executive board's activities across the state. Stefanie is planning to start her Masters in Teaching this Spring, after which she looks forward to helping kids fall in love with learning as a high school history teacher. 4
5 WHAT IS SNCAE? The Student North Carolina Association of Educators is a pre-professional organization for undergraduate and graduate students interested in a career in education. SNCAE is a division of the larger North Carolina Association of Educators; the leading professional organization for educators in North Carolina, representing over 65,000 members of the National Education Association, the largest education association in the United States. SNCAE s goal is to prepare college students for their futures as educators. Through NCAE, workshops are offered free of charge in areas such as No Child Left Behind, PRAXIS preparation, Diversity in the Classroom, and Classroom Management for the New Teacher. Local chapters at colleges and universities provide support with job interviewing skills, resume writing, student teaching, and advice for the first year teaching. A spring convention is held each year at which SNCAE members can attend professional workshops, vote on an executive board for the upcoming year, and network with other future educators. If you are a future educator in the state of North Carolina, join your professional organization, SNCAE, and make a difference with today s youth WHAT DOES SNCAE MEMBERSHIP COST? NEA Student Program dues are $15 and NCAE dues are $12. Local dues are set by the individual chapters at each college or university. When you join NCAE and complete the rebate form in your first year of membership, you will receive a $20 rebate from NEA and a $10 rebate from NCAE for every year you were a student member. Just request a rebate form from your school s Association Representative or contact NCAE Membership Department ( ). Once you join, you will receive NEA Today, Tomorrow s Teachers, and the NCAE News Bulletin as well as your membership card that will allow you to access thousands of nationwide discounts. Your subscriptions will begin automatically through the online registration process. You will also be covered under a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy, which protects you during classroom observations and student teaching. 5
6 UPCOMING EVENTS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13,2014 FALL Leadership Conference for Chapter Leaders at UNC Greensboro SAVE THE DATES March 28,2015 Outreach 2 Teach April 10-11, 2015 Spring Conference Scholarships Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship: The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship is named in memory of Mary Frank Morrow, who served as the first president of the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, and Edna Cotton Richards, an outstanding leader within the North Carolina Teachers Association and the North Carolina Association of Educators. Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a teacher-education pro-gram. They must be in the JUNIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE at the time of application, and will-ing to teach in the public schools of North Carolina for at least two (2) years following graduation. *All required materials must be postmarked no later than January 30, annually INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE COMING SOON 6
7 STORY OF SELF, US,&NOW: NEA SUMMER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Every year the NEA Student Program hosts a summer leadership conference a few days before their Representative Assembly. This year's conference took place in Denver, Colorado and SNCAE's four delegates and two other leadership team members were able to attend. The theme of the conference was "The Story of Self, Us, and Now," where we explored our personal stories, our collaborative experiences, and our plan for engaging members. There were also trainings on topics such as diversity, voter registration, and working together across state lines. At the conference student delegates from each state elected our new NEA Student Program Chairperson, Resolution Committee Members, and Board of Directors (see separate post to find out who was elected). Awards were also given out to local and state chapters. SNCAE submitted nominations for Outstanding State Organizer, State Communication, Outstanding State Leader, and State Excellence. From our local chapters, Amber Travis of Gardner-Webb University, was nominated for Outstanding Local Leader and Dr. Erin Horne was nominated for Outstanding Chapter Advisor. 7
8 SPOTLIGHT We are proud to announce that Elic Senter won the Award for Outstanding State Organizer Congratulations Elic SNCAE also received a recognition for growing student membership last year. Keep these awards in mind, there will be an opportunity to nominate your chapter for several awards at the end of this year Our incoming State President, Runda Alamour, had the opportunity to attend the NEA Retired Conference to accept the Jack Kinnaman Scholarship Award.
