4 INTRODUCTION This document includes a demonstration script that examines how cumulative update 6 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 supports sales and kanban line events in combination with delivery date control based on capable to promise. The demo script will introduce and explain the features that are included in this release. The main concepts are capable to promise and sales and kanban line event kanbans, and how they can be combined for use in make-to-order scenarios. AUDIENCE The scripts in this document can be used to demonstrate the value of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 to a business decision maker (BDM). The executives that you present to will find value in this script if they are challenged with: Capable to promise Reduction of sales lead times Improvement of on-time delivery in sales and final assembly Build-to-order, assemble-to-order, or package-to-order Lean manufacturing DEMO PRESET CONFIGURATION This script was written to work with the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 CU6 Virtual Machine (VM), released in July Make sure that the VM is up and running and that you have logged on. The script addresses key pain points and challenges that different roles might face. However this demo should be presented as a single user who has system administrator rights. 5 CONCEPTS CAPABLE TO PROMISE (CTP) Delivering what customers want, when they need it and where they need it this is the definition of customer value in the first of the five lean principles formulated by Womack and Jones. This is why CTP delivery date control was introduced in Microsoft Dynamics AX CTP is a planning philosophy that requires a sophisticated set of planning policies and parameters, because planning is implicitly done at the time of order entry instead of being done as a batch process by a planner. As a result, CTP requires that planning and scheduling provide reliable and reproducible results. All supply and scheduling policies and exceptions have to be fully modeled in the solution, and accurate maintenance of the data is key to a business s success. It is equally critical to provide the user with an explanation of the scheduling results, especially in the configuration phase of the supply and scheduling policies. In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, CTP is supported by combining the following basic capabilities: o o o The dynamic plan: Configurations of the dynamic plan Pegging, marking, and reservations Futures dates Demand explosion on the dynamic plan Delivery date control at the time of sales order entry Scheduling trace tool In brief, CTP is enabled by running the demand explosion for the sales lines, and it uses the resulting futures date to set the confirmed shipment dates. 5

6 THE SALES EVENT KANBAN The sales event is triggered by the creation of or a change to a sales line regardless whether this happens manually, through Enterprise Portal, or by using the sales creation services of Microsoft Dynamics AX. Each sales line creates one or multiple kanbans to fulfill the related demand, based on the maximum product quantity that is defined in the kanban rule and that corresponds to the maximum handling unit size. The kanban cards printed for sales event kanbans contain customer and customer order references and can be used as shipment labels for the handling units. 6

7 THE KANBAN LINE EVENT KANBAN Kanban line events can be created to pull components from a pre-processing activity. In the following example a lean work cell assembles painted parts (B) to finished products (A). The kanbans for A can be of any replenishment strategy fixed, scheduled or event. While all standard colors red, green or blue are picked from a supermarket that is replenished as fixed quantity kanban, the special colors gold and silver create event kanbans. Further reading: a.) 8 DEMO: SUSAN TAKES AN ORDER WITH CTP AND SALES EVENT KANBANS Personas Scenario In this scenario Susan takes a sales order for a product (L0026) supplied out of the following production flow: 8

9 Ensure that you are positioned in Legal Entity USMF. Check current legal entity in lower right corner of the AX client. Before you start, navigate to Master planning / Periodic / Master scheduling. Select the Dynamics plan DynPlan and the Principle Regeneration. Click Ok to create an initial dynamic plan. 9

10 CREATE A SALES ORDER 1. Navigate to Sales and marketing/common/all sales orders. 2. Click New -> Sales order. 1. Select a customer account. 2. Open the shipping FastTab to consider the default delivery date and the default delivery date control. 3. Change the delivery date to today Click Ok. CREATE A NEW SALES ORDER LINE 5. Create a sales order line for the item L0026: enter L0026 in the sales line. 6. Click Tab to leave the field and observe how the order data is pre-populated from the default order settings. 10

11 7. Open the product line details and select a configuration (01). 8. Click the delivery tab -> 9. Save the line by using Ctrl-S. Be patient. It takes around 30 seconds for the delivery date control dialog to open and display the first available ship date based on the CTP explosion. 10. Select the first possible line (in this example Monday 26 th ) and press Update confirmed ship date. 11. Observe the new confirmed ship date and confirmed receipt date. 12. Select Products and supply / Explosion to display the details of the dynamic plan. 11

12 13. Observe that the futures date of the planned purchase order has pushed the two kanbans for L0025 and L0026 out in the future. The requirement date on the kanban for L0026 has been updated base on the new confirmed ship date. 14. Close the explosion form. 15. Select Products and supply / View pegging tree. 16. Select the kanban for L0025 and open the Kanban jobs FastTab. 17. Observe that the kanban job has been created for the first date when the material is available. 18. Close the form. 19. Click Add line to create a second sales line. 20. Select item number L0026 and configuration 02, quantity Save the line by using Ctrl-S. 12

13 22. Observe the suggestion for the same confirmed shipment date as for the first line. 23. Click Update confirmed ship date. 24. Open Product and Supply / View pegging tree. 25. Observe that 6 kanbans have been created for this sales order line. 26. Close the form. 27. Click Add line to create a third sales line. 28. Select Item number L0026 and configuration 03, quantity Save the line by using Ctrl-S. 13

14 30. Observe that the first available ship date is now one working day later. 31. Click Update confirmed ship date. 32. Select Product and Supply / Explosion. 33. Observe that the Kanban for L0025 has a futures date of one day after material availability of M Close the Explosion form. 35. Select Product and Supply / View pegging tree. 36. Select the second kanban for L Observe that the schedule period date is equal to the futures date of the kanban job. 38. Close the Pegging tree. 39. Close the sales order form. 14

15 40. Navigate to Production control / Common / Lean manufacturing / Kanban schedule board. 41. Select the work cell Click on the right arrow to move the focus to the scheduled periods (click 6 or 7 times). The schedule now displays the 7 kanban jobs for L0025 that have been created to fulfill the 3 sales order lines. 43. Observe that the reason for the additional delay was work cell capacity. This concluded the CTP and event kanban demo. Wrap up on demo just presented. 15
