IS/ISO Environmental Management Systems Specifications with Guidance for use is an Energy Management standard developed over several years by the world s leading energy management experts, representing over 60 countries and adopted by BIS as IS/ISO It specifies requirements for an energy management system to provide organizations an internationally recognized framework to manage and improve their energy performance. ISO does not include prescriptive energy performance goals. Rather, it provides a framework through which each organization can set and pursue its own goals for improving energy performance. The requirements are used to

2 establish and implement a Plan-Do-Check-Act continual improvement system for managing energy and achieving energy performance improvements. IS/ISO can be implemented, regardless of the types of energy used. Based on the common elements of ISO management system standards, IS/ISO has a high level of compatibility with other management system standards like IS/ISO 9001 quality management systems and IS/ISO environmental management systems. 2. What is the role of BIS in IS/ISO 50001? BIS is the National Standards Body of India and is a founder member of ISO. BIS represents India, in ISO. The Technical Committee (TC) number 242 (ISO/TC 242), and its Sub-committees of ISO are responsible for the development of ISO standards. Industry experts from India including BIS officers nominated by BIS participate in the meetings of the Technical Committee ISO/TC 242 and its Sub-committees held globally. 3. Is IS/ISO appropriate for my organization? IS/ ISO can help organizations of all types, public sector, governmental, corporations, small or medium sized businesses across all sectors save money by saving wasted energy. Can t I just use my IS/ISO system to manage my energy related matters? Yes. any organisation can successfully manage their energy via their IS/ISO system. IS/ ISO provides a more specific framework that enables an organization to apply a greater focus on energy efficiency. IS/ISO applies to industrial plants; commercial, institutional, or governmental facilities, large buildings; and entire organizations. IS/ISO provides benefits for organizations large and small, in both public and private sectors, in manufacturing and services, in all regions of the world. 8. What is Energy Conservation Act? Government of India has enacted the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 keeping in view of importance and benefits of energy efficiency. The Schedule to the Energy Conservation Act provides list of energy Intensive Industries and other establishments, specified as Designated consumers. As the notified Designated consumer has to take up certain activities mandatory under the Act, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has approved notification of such of the industrial units as Designated Consumers. EC Act 2001 provides the legal framework for IS/ISO What is the difference between ISO standard and IS/ISO standard? There is no difference. They are exactly the same. BIS had adopted the above mentioned ISO standard and this is numbered as IS/ISO BIS also provides certification against IS/ISO under its Management Systems Certification activity. 10. My organization provides services. How are the IS/ISO standard applicable to us? The IS/ISO energy management standard exist to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment (in terms of energy used) and comply with applicable laws and regulations. IS/ISO specifies requirements for establishing an energy policy, determining significant energy use and impacts of products / activities / services, planning energy objectives and measurable targets. Thus IS/ISO standard is applicable to all types of organizations. 13. Is there any guidance standard for implementation of IS/ISO 50001? The guidance for its use is already provided in IS/ISO How to implement the requirements of ISO in my organization? As a minimum you should familiarize yourself not only with the requirements of IS/ISO 50001, but guidance for its use provided therein. What is the difference between certification and accreditation? In simple terms, accreditation is like certification of the certification body. `Accreditation should not be used as an interchangeable alternative for
