Who we are The Bertelsmann Stiftung, founded by Reinhard Mohn ( ) in 1977, is a nonprofit organization that functions exclusively as a private operating foundation. Our goal is to promote social change. This was the vision of our founder, and it remains the basic principle underlying our work. We are independent and politically nonpartisan. As a foundation, we see ourselves as an integral part of society. We are committed to the values of freedom, solidarity and humanity and believe in the benefits of competition.

6 Global Framework: The basics of Corporate Responsibility There is a widely-shared understanding of the fundamentals on which CSR is based: OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights ILO Core Labor Standards United Nations Global Compact These international agreements form the frame of reference for CSR-instruments: Principles and codes of conduct (e.g. Equator Principles) Guideline for management systems (e.g. ISO ) Reporting systems (e.g. Global Reporting Initiative) Rating systems (e.g. Dow Jones Sustainability Index) Page 6

7 European Framework: Disclosure of non-financial and diversity Information by large companies Obligation to report: Large companies which are public-interest entities with more than 500 employees Non-financial statement shall be included in the management report: - Environmental, social and employee matters, respect for human rights, anticorruption and bribery matters - Description of policies and outcomes, risks related to those matters, KPIs Companies can rely on national, Union-based or international frameworks (e.g. UN Global Compact, OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, Global Reporting Initiative ) Page 7

13 The way ahead: Aligning CSR with the Sustainable Development Goals Goal 8: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment Page 13
