1 Publisher 2010 creates professional looking documents, such as brochures, flyers, newsletters, greeting cards, etc., quickly. Built-in templates, custom templates and a variety of templates on Office.com are available for use. Find and apply a template 1. Open Publisher -- File (top) and New (left) should be highlighted. 2. Under Available Templates, select one of the following: a. Installed and Online Templates use to search templates installed to the computer and templates on Office.com (Internet connection required). i. Choose either a category from the Most Popular section or a category from the More Templates section. ii. Select the desired template and click Create or Download. b. Online Templates searches Office.com only (Internet required). i. Under Most Popular or More Templates, click the desired category. ii. Select the desired template and click Download. c. Installed Templates searches the computer only (Internet not required). i. Choose either My Templates, a category from the Most Popular section or a category from the More Templates section. ii. Select the desired template and click Create.
2 NOTES: In addition to using the template categories to browse for templates, you can search for templates based on keywords. For example, you might want to create a brochure with a tri-fold format, instead of going to the Brochures category and then browsing through the various two-page or four-fold options to find tri-fold formats, you can enter tri-fold brochure in the Search for Templates box to find all the available brochure templates in a tri-fold format. For installed templates you have the option to customize colors, fonts, or other features of the template before you open it. Changes can also be made after opening.
3 Ribbons Toolbars are now referred to as ribbons. The ribbons offer different options depending on what item is selected on the page. Home Ribbon and Selections: No selection Drawing tools Text box tools Picture tools Note: You must click on the colored tabs to activate that ribbon. Other Ribbons: Insert Page Design Mailings Review View
4 Note: To make changes in a Publisher publication, click into the desired area and make the change. Save often. Delete an Object 1. Select the object. 2. Click on the border of the object. 3. Press the Delete key on the keyboard. Insert a text box 1. Go to Insert > Draw Text Box. 2. Click and drag in the chosen location. 3. Type the information. Insert a picture 1. Go to Insert > Picture. 2. Navigate to the picture s location and select it. 3. Click Insert. 4. Move and resize as needed. Crop a picture 1. Double click the desired picture. 2. Click the Crop button. 3. Click on the black holders and drag to cut the desired portion of the picture. 4. Click away from the picture for the crop to be made. Building Block Galleries Building Blocks are different premade elements that can be added to the publication. The five galleries contain: Page Parts: Pre-formatted structural elements such as headings, sidebars, and stories. Calendars: Pre-formatted monthly calendars. The current or next month can be selected from the gallery, or a month and year can be selected from the Building Block Library. Borders & Accents: Graphic elements such as adding borders, emphasis, and frames. Advertisements: Pre-formatted advertisement elements, including coupons. 5 Insert a building block from a gallery 1. In the Page Navigation pane (left), select the page in the publication where the building block will be inserted. 2. Click the Insert tab. 3. In the Building Blocks section, click the desired building block gallery. 4. Scroll to find a building block, or click the More <gallery name> to open the Building Block Library. 5. Click to insert the desired building block. 6. Move and resize as needed. Create a building block You can create your own building blocks in addition to the ones that come with Publisher Create an element or group of elements that you want to be able to reuse, such as a logo, image or other design. 2. Right-click in the middle of the element and select Save as Building Block. 3. In the Create New Building Block window, enter the information about the building block: Title: A name for the building block. Description: Optional description of the building block s purpose. Gallery: Which of the five galleries the building block will be placed. Show in Gallery: This check-box determines if the building block will be available in the gallery. This is checked by default and un-checked this building block while in the building block library it will not appear in the gallery. Category: A pre-built category may be selected or a new category name can be typed. 4. Click OK to save. NOTE: Custom building blocks are saved as a PBB file in \Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Publisher Building Blocks. The AppData folder is hidden by default. Printing/Sharing Print Preview is no longer a separate feature; it is integrated into the Print functions on the File ribbon. Print lets you 'flip' 2-sided documents to see more easily how it will print on each side. Save a Publication as a Template Templates can be made from any publication by saving that publication as a Publisher template file. Templates can be downloaded from Microsoft Office.com, changed and saved as a template also. 1. Create or open the publication to be saved as a template.
6 2. Go to the File tab and select Save As. 3. In the Save as type box, click Publisher Template. NOTE: The default template location is: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates folder. If you save your template to a different location, Publisher may not be able to find it. 4. In the File name box, type a name for the template. 5. By default the template will be assigned to the category General. You have the option of assigning the template to a different category by clicking the Change button and either selecting an existing category or entering a new category in the Template Category dialog box. 6.
