3 SHEPHERD GUIDE Noah s Ark (Genesis 6 9) Lower Elementary Welcome to the story of Noah s Ark! As the caring leader of your small group of kids, you are an important part of their Spark experience. You also support the other Rotation leaders by being a consistent and friendly presence with your group. Use these Small Group Builders, Conversation Sparks, and Transition Tips to generate conversation and build relationships with your kids. Have fun as you grow in faith together! Small Group Builders Try these tips to build relationships, trust, and friendship with your small group of kids when you have a few minutes at the beginning of Sunday school or between activities. Group Addition Noah put two of each animal on his ark. List all the animals your group can name, then ask a volunteer to do the addition, adding two for each animal the group names. What is the total of this big addition problem? Is there another way to do this with a different kind of math? Family Construction Noah s family built the ark. His family was full of people: a mother, a father, kids, brothers, and many more! Work as a group to build a family. One person starts, naming a family relationship (brother, sister, etc). Keep going until your group names all the family members you can imagine. Animal Feeding Imagine all the food it took to feed those animals! Divide into two groups. One group names an animal. The second group names the food that Noah would have needed to feed that animal. Conversation Sparks Spark some faith-filled conversation during time you wait for activities to start or between activities. Use these questions with the kids in your group whenever you have a minute or two. Why did God choose Noah to build the ark? How would you begin to build an ark? How does rain affect the rivers, streams, and oceans? Do you think Noah was able to steer the ark? Why did God promise not to flood the earth again? How did Noah know there was dry land? 4 Transition Tips As your group moves from one place to another, keep things fun and story-focused! Try these tips as you transition. Penguin Waddle Noah had many animals on the ark. Each had a unique walk. Think about the penguin. Can you walk like a penguin to the next location? Penguins waddle as they walk. I wonder if anyone can guess what animal you are? High Three The ark was three stories high. Choose partners. Instead of a high five, give each other a high three to remember the ark that was three stories high. Put up your three middle fingers. Hit your partner s three fingers first on one hand and then the other as you walk to your next location. Color March God sent a rainbow of colors and promised never to flood the earth again. March to your next activity as you shout out the colors of the rainbow. You are a marching rainbow! Flowing Water When the floodwaters came, water flowed down mountains, hills, and rivers. Move your arms and bodies like flowing water. Flow to your next place, remembering the gift of water. 146 Shepherd Guides

Commanded God commanded Noah to built the ark, and Noah was NOT too happy. Share a time you knew you should do something that didn t make you happy. How did you feel after you completed the task? Mark It Off Noah s ark was about 450 feet (137 m) long. Use a ruler or yardstick as a group and mark off 450 feet (137 m). Now measure the width of 75 feet (23 m). Does that seem too big or too small for the ark? Would it have been difficult to make an ark that big? New Ending Stories often depend on one action to make the ending. In the story of Noah, when the dove brought an olive leaf, the ending was set. Write a new ending for the story that starts with the dove not finding an olive leaf. How would this new ending change the story? Conversation Sparks Spark some faith-filled conversation during time you wait for activities to start or between activities. Use these questions with the kids in your group whenever you have a minute or two. I wonder if Arctic animals were on the ark. Compare what wickedness of human kind meant in the time of Noah to what wickedness means in today s world. How would you explain the phrase Walk with God? Why do you think Noah planted a vineyard? How could you have a covenant with others? I wonder if Noah and his family knew the names of all the animals on earth. Noah s Ark 147

6 Transition Tips As your group moves from one place to another, keep things fun and story-focused! Try these tips as you transition. 950 Steps Noah lived 950 years. As you move along, count your steps together. Start with 1 and see if you can make it all the way to 950 steps. Tall and Straight God told Noah to use cypress trees to build the ark. Cypress trees are very tall and straight. Get to your next place by standing tall and straight like the cypress trees. Hold your arms straight over your head and walk tall. Building an Altar Noah built an altar for the Lord. He would have moved stones to build the altar. Make a group line. Pretend the first person in your line is picking up a huge stone for the altar. Pass the stone down the line as you move ahead to your next activity. Sign of the Covenant God placed a rainbow over the world as a sign of a covenant made with the people. Start your rainbow with both hands at the left side of your body. As you move, make an arc over your head with your hands. End your rainbow with both hands on the right side. 148 Shepherd Guides

Ark Noise The ark had lots of noises. Go around your circle making only noises of animals on the ark. Try not to repeat any noises. Don t forget about the birds and bugs! Make lots of noise. Family Project Building the ark was a family project for Noah s relatives. Sit in a circle and share other family projects. Think about things your family does around your home or to help others. Does your family always get along when they are doing projects? Rainmakers Rain flooded the earth. Your group can become the rainstorm. Divide the noises into raindrops, lightning, thunder, sleet, waves, and wind. Start with just a few raindrops, and turn your group into a raging rainstorm that gets louder and louder. Conversation Sparks Spark some faith-filled conversation during time you wait for activities to start or between activities. Use these questions with the kids in your group whenever you have a minute or two. Why did God save Noah and his family from the flood? How were the cypress trees cut to make boards for the ark? I wonder how it felt to get off the ark after so long? How much food did they need on the ark? Why does the rainbow remind us of God s covenant? Why did Noah take two of every kind of animal on the ark? Noah s Ark 149

8 Transition Tips As your group moves from one place to another, keep things fun and story-focused! Try these tips as you transition. Creeping Things God wanted Noah to put all things that creep on the ark. I wonder what animals creep? Creep along to your next activity. No running, jumping, or hopping. Just creep along the floor. Duck Waddle There were all kinds of ducks on the ark. Ducks waddle with their tails stuck up. Squat and put a tail on your back with your hands. Waddle to your next location. Flying Butterflies, bugs, and birds flew on the ark. Spread your wings and fly to your next activity. Are you a dragonfly or an eagle? Celebrate the joy of flight with your body and your expressions. Drifting Clouds At the end of Noah s story, the water went down and dry land appeared. Clouds drifted in the sky above the ark. How would you drift like clouds? Act like a big, fluffy cloud and float to the next location. All clouds look different. Be unique as you drift along. 150 Shepherd Guide
