RICHARDS BAY MINERALS LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
IN A NUTSHELL RBM has committed R150 million towards the Local Economic Development (LED) Programme from 2009 to The programme has largely focussed on infrastructure development projects such as roads, clinics, the provision of water, education infrastructure as well as income generating projects and agriculture. LED projects are driven in conjunction with the local municipalities and provincial government departments. This brochure highlights a number of initiatives, projects and interventions in various developmental areas.
EDUCATION MKHAYIDENI & TISAND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS Develop technical-related skills at high school level in the local area Develop Mkhayideni into a fullyfledged technical high school, and upgrade Tisand workshop equipment Increase and enhance the human resource capacity to deliver quality technical, mathematics and science education for learners Support the South African economy s needs for skilled human resources in mathematics and technical fields RBM built Tisand and Mkhayideni in 1998 as technical high schools Mkhayideni Workshop: 56 metres X 16,5 metres brick and steel structure for the training of electrical and mechanical subjects. This includes an administration office RBM has sponsored 100 learners in the fields of mathematics and science through the Bambisanani Leadership Community Programme since 2002 Six students from these schools received RBM bursaries for further studies in engineering and mining related fields and for later employment by RBM In 2013, the Mkhayideni school proudly had a student with seven distinctions who has gone on to study medicine PROCUREMENT OPPORTUNITIES The construction of the workshop was awarded to a Mbonambi community enterprise, Isibonelo Construction R6,906,664 JOBS CREATED TOTAL EMPLOYED: 21 (YOUTH: 11; WOMEN: 1)
HUMAN SETTLEMENTS HOUSES FOR THE DESTITUTE Support government s endeavour in providing housing for low income and poor community members Supports the provincial government s Sukuma Sakhe Programme date 1 26 houses completed 66m 2 house consisting of three bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchen Houses in areas where there is no water connection are provided with litre water (Jojo) tanks A number of government departments and stakeholders have been engaged in the implementation of this project. These include the Departments of Mineral Resources, Human Settlements and Social Development, as well as local municipalities and traditional councils. Izinduna, working with elected councilors, identified households that were considered for award of houses from sub-wards (izigodi) Selection criteria considered at the following: Child-headed households People with disabilities Elderly people Orphans People with chronic debilitating illnesses Extremely destitute individuals PROCUREMENT OPPORTUNITIES All construction work has been awarded to enterprises from the host communities 13 different host community enterprises have been awarded contracts to build the houses to R15,482,551 JOBS CREATED TOTAL EMPLOYED: 120
TRANSPORT BUILDING AND IMPROVING ROADS Improve road networks in communities Improve connectivity to economic hubs, while improved infrastructure will create more opportunities for community investment and eco-tourism growth PROCUREMENT OPPORTUNITIES D887 In partnership with the KZN Department of Transport, work started in November 2013 and is scheduled to be complete by November Eight host community enterprises from the Dube and Mkhwanazi communities awarded various sub-contracting work on the road construction. P232 In partnership with the KZN Department of Transport, work started in January 2014 and is scheduled to be complete by December Eight host community enterprises from the Sokhulu community awarded various sub-contracting work on the road construction. R23,257,936 D887 D887 is one of the main access routes into and out of the Dube community and a number of izigodi (sub-wards) are served by the D887. It is the main route connecting the Dube Traditional Court with Esikhaleni and onto the N2. Four community schools are situated along the route, as well as the Mpembeni clinic. P232 Sokhulu is located near the N2 and P232 provides the thoroughfare to the N2 and Mbonambi Town. The upgrade of P232 will provide a seamless connection for the Sokhulu community to the Meerensee area and Richards Bay city. Sokhulu has the Mapelane Nature Reserve which is a pristine tourist destination accessible through the P232. The poor condition of P232 has previously hampered the realisation of the full potential of Mapelane Nature Reserve as a local and district attraction for fishing and other tourist activities. From time to time, RBM also attracts visitors local, national and international to see its worldclass mining operations and the company s award-winning dune forest rehabilitation programme. However, these visitors do not get to experience the culture and heritage of local people due to poor access to these communities. This challenge will now be addressed through the upgraded road networks. JOBS CREATED TOTAL EMPLOYED: 156 D887: 113 P232: 43
HEALTH CLINICS SOKHULU CLINIC Establish a comprehensive and integrated facility with suitable capacity to handle the ever increasing number of people seeking health services in Sokhulu PROCUREMENT OPPORTUNITIES Construction of both clinics undertaken by host community contractors MBONAMBI CLINIC Establish a comprehensive, sustainable and integrated HIV/AIDS management centre in Mbonambi community that will service at least four surrounding communities SOKHULU CLINIC The old Sokhulu Clinic, built by RBM many years ago, could no longer cater for the needs of the more than community members in the areas Building of the new Sokhulu Clinic was motivated by statistics which recorded a drastic increase from to individual visits per month in 2009/2010 MBONAMBI CLINIC The centre will provide the following services: Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Anti-retroviral treatment (ARVs) Infant formula feeding Provider Initiated Counselling and Testing (PICT) to ensure that all pregnant women are offered Voluntary Counselling & Testing (VCT) Wellness and support services R7,911,982 SOKHULU CLINIC TOTAL EMPLOYED: 46 WOMEN: 11 YOUTH: 40 MBONAMBI CLINIC TOTAL EMPLOYED: 26 WOMEN: 4 YOUTH: 22
