1 OOSTBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 1ST GRADE CURRICULUM GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE AND SEQUENCE The Goal of Christian Education The primary goal of Christian education consists of helping each student to grow into an independent person so that he/she can serve God according to His Word and is able and willing to employ all his/her talents to the honor of God and for the well being of his/her fellow creatures, in every area of life in which he/she is placed by God. The Objectives of Christian Education 1. To deepen his/her relationship with and commitment to love God. 2. To develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for fulfilling his/her calling effectively in modern society. 3. To discover and develop particular gifts and talents. 4. To train and discipline those skills and attitudes necessary for satisfaction and productively in work and/or advanced levels of schooling. 5. To develop awareness of him/herself as a learner able to adapt knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the ordinary tasks of life. 6. To acquire competence for responsible living as an adult; especially the sensitivity and skill necessary for effective communication. 7. To follow the norms for good health and physical fitness. 8. To develop abilities of perception and judgment in moral and ethical matters. 9. To mature as a Christian person in relation to self, others, and the environment. 10. To acquire appreciation for the customs, habits, and beliefs of other Christian faith communities, ethnic groups, and other cultures. Art Goals 1. To teach the child that God has created him/her as an individual and that art is an expression of him/herself. 2. To encourage the development of individual artistic talent. 3. To expose students to a variety of art media. 4. To develop eye-hand coordination. 5. To develop an appreciation of art principles in God's creation, common objects, and art work. 6. To motivate the students to work on art projects. 1

Equip each child to demonstrate his/her faith through a life of praise, gratitude, and service. 7. Help each child recognize the joy and comfort in knowing that everything belongs to God. The body is a priceless possession for the Christian. Students should learn that their bodies are important. 4

5 2. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. God gives us physical attributes (talents), and we must care for those just as much as our intellectual and spiritual ones. The care of our bodies is our decisional responsibility and part of our reasonable service to God. 3. Each of us is an organic whole. Education through the physical is not only possible but necessary! Because children learn by precept and practice, one task in physical education is to see that children understand and practice such values as personal integrity, cooperation, self-respect, responsibility, and persistence. 4. Creative: Developing and maintaining health fitness and motor proficiency. Students will care for their bodies (health fitness) and will use human movement (motor proficiency) to most efficiently and meaningfully serve God and humanity. 5. Intellectual: Understanding the human organism in action. True thankfulness to God should be the result of understanding how our bodies are created and maintained. 6. Decisional: Developing the ability to make decisions about fitness, sport, and recreational pursuits and about Christian personal and social conduct. Reading/Literature Goals 1. To learn to read so students can better understand God's world and His will for their lives. 2. To learn letters and sounds. 3. To gain a working knowledge of phonetic rules and apply these to reading. 4. To increase reading comprehension. 5. To increase basic reading vocabulary. 6. To recognize sight words. 7. To improve oral reading ability and learn to use vocal and facial expressions. 8. To listen to a wide variety of stories. READING/LITERATURE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE HoughtonMiflin2005Edition Science Goals 1. Develop an appreciation of God's wonderful creation. 2. Realize our uniqueness as image-bearers of God. 3. Stimulate curiosity about our environment. 4. Help children realize their responsibilities in the protection of our environment. 5. Sharpen powers of observation. 6. 6 7. Develop understanding of cause-effect relationships. SCIENCE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE 1. Animals: God created a variety of animals to praise Him. Part of man s job is to care for and enjoy them. a. Mammals (bears, cats, dogs, elephants, pigs, whales) b. Birds (also penguins) c. Amphibians d. Reptiles e. Fish f. Insects g. Pets h. Farm animals i. Zoo animals 2. Habitats: To make the Earth a place to live, God separated the land from the seas. Depending on the region, God has placed different plans and animls there to live. a. Desert b. Polar c. Ocean d. Grassland e. Rainforest f. Forest 3. Plants: Part of man s task is to take care of and use plants for the good and enjoyment of all. a. Pumpkins b. Apples c. Trees d. Leaves e. Watermelon 4. Space: God placed Earth in the middle of a vast space to be our home and to use it while we care for it. 5. Senses: Gifts from God that help keep us healthy and safe and also help us enjoy His world. 6. Weather: Man does not control the weather-god does. Weather forecasting helps people to plan ahead and to take precautions. Mini-units are created by the teacher No Textbook is used Social Studies Goals 1. To appreciate our world God has given us. 2. To appreciate that God made all people. 3. To appreciate differences among people. 4. To understand community helpers. 5. To understand different places to live. (i.e. city, town, country) 6. To learn basics of safety. 7. To learn about famous people in history. 8. To gain a strong positive self-image. 9. To gain an appreciation of our country and how it operates (patriotism). 10. To understand the importance of traditions. 6

My Community and its helpers: God created people special. Each person uses their gifts and talents to praise God and help mankind care for the earth. a. Dentist and dental health b. Post Office c. Bakery d. Firemen and Fire Safety 2. Famous People and Inventors: God gave people intelligence. Some people use these gifts to invent tools and machines and help people care for the earth. Others were God s servants to rule and maintain justice. a. Abraham Lincoln b. George Washington c. Johnny Appleseed d. Christopher Columbus 3. People from Faraway Lands and Cultures: God created people special. All people were created to worship God and to care for the earth. We need to pray for our missionaries. a. Native Americans b. Inuits c. People from Africa d. People from Japan 4. Family and Friends: God made families. Parents lead children so they become responsible members or the body of Christ. 5. Maps: Maps explain the earth and help with transportation. They are another tool to help people learn about and care for the earth. 6. Transportation: Tools/Inventions that help people live and work together.
