Our teaching day this year is meant to capture the timely topic of the dual diagnosed patient as it pertains to eating disorders. Professionals in the eating disorders field recognize that eating disorders rarely travel alone and many patients present with anxiety, depression and or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that both trauma and substance abuse may precipitate and /or perpetuate eating disorder behaviors that patients use to cope with life events, stress, and trauma or mood disorders. We will be exploring the similarities between eating and substance abuse disorders as well as how trauma may play a role in both. Psychodrama techniques will be shared with attendees that may be used in working with this patient population. The hourly rate is $1.60 and the maximum per day rate is $9.50. After parking, you may reach CAMLS via the pedestrian walkway on Franklin Street. The main entrance to CAMLS is located at the corner of Franklin and Brorein. Directions are available online on Google Maps (search USF Health CAMLS ) Course Description Research suggests that nearly 50% of individuals with an eating disorder (ED) are also abusing drugs and/or alcohol, a rate 5 times greater than what is seen in the general population. Conversely, up to 35 % of alcohol or illicit drug abusers have eating disorders compared to 3% of the general population. Directionality of onset is not clearly understood but it is important to note that substance abuse can develop before, during, or after treatment for an eating disorder. Because health care professionals often overlook the link between substance abuse and eating disorders, treatment options may seem limited for these cooccurring conditions. The special challenges of treating these co-occurring disorders will be discussed and this presentation highlights shame as a key force underlying and perpetuating the cyclical nature of these disorders. Clinicians will learn how to identify and help individuals break the patterns of shame that drive their destructive behaviors. Treatment that attempts to address both disorders in an integrated way holds promise to help reduce the all too common pattern of patients vacillating between their eating disorder and substance abuse. Target Audience This program is designed to meet the educational needs of psychologists, dieticians, nurses, social workers, and therapists who treat persons with eating disorders. Program Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Verbalize special challenges in diagnosing and treating co-occurring Eating Disorders (ED) and Substance Abuse (SA) Verbalize the cyclical role that shame plays in precipitation and perpetuation of ED and SA Articulate at least two practical ways to help individuals break cycles of shame and destructive behaviors of ED and SA Identify at least three major similarities and differences between eating and substance use disorders Describe at least 3 major medical complications of eating and substance use disorders List the strengths and weaknesses of current strategies to treat patients with eating and substance use disorders Psychodrama Objectives: Participants will be able to Design a warm-up for an eating disorder client or group Experience a food atom, with relational and emotional connections to food issues Experience roles in which eating disordered clients get role locked, and learn how to shift clients using the double Continuing education credit is available for nurses, psychologists, registered dieticians, and Florida licensed clinical social workers, marriage & family therapists, and mental health counselors. 4 Faculty Pauline Powers, MD: Nationally and internationally recognized as a leading researcher, educator and trainer in the ongoing battle to end eating disorders. She is currently the Medical Director of Fairwinds Treatment Center. With over 40 years of experience in the field of eating disorder treatment, Dr. Powers was the founding President of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), past President of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), a founding member of the Eating Disorders Research Society, is on the Editorial Board of the Eating Disorders Review, and is a published author on the subject of eating disorders. She has also been part of the AED Credentialing Task Force as well as collaborated on development of the APA Guidelines for eating disorders. Margaret Nagib, Psy D: Key faculty member of Timberline Knolls Clinical Development Institute. She is a clinical psychologist specializing in Christian counseling, inner healing and treating eating disorders, trauma, addiction, self-injury and mood disorders. She has been in clinical practice for 15 years and currently travels throughout the country providing clinical training and presentations to professionals. She is a member of the American Association of Professional Counselors, the Christian Association for Psychological Studies, the Association of Christian Therapists and a Regional director for the International Bethel Sozo Organization. Mary Bellofatto, MA, LMHC, NCC CEDS, TEP: Owner and President of Mary Bellofatto Consulting in Naples, Florida. She has been in the mental health field for over thirty five years, leading retreats, seminars, trainings, and program development in the eating disorder field nationally, and internationally. She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the state of Florida, a national Certified Counselor, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and a certified Trainer, Educator, and Practitioner of Psychodrama. Mary is presently on the Board of Directors for iaedp and the Executive Counsel of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama.. 4
