3 There are 6 ways a professional can become certified: Traditional Certification for licensed clinicians who want to pursue advanced expertise and proficiency in ED field Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS) for Mental Health Specialists and Physicians Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) for Registered Dietitians Certified Eating Disorders Registered Nurse (CEDRN) for Nursing Professionals Certified Eating Disorders Creative Arts Therapist (CEDCAT) for licensed Dance, Music and Art Therapists Equivalency Certification for licensed clinicians with 5+ years of ED experience who meet equivalency standards International Certification, both Traditional and Equivalency, for professionals living outside the U.S. Honorary Certification, a designation awarded annually to a professional who has demonstrated above and beyond expertise in the field of eating disorders

5 CEDS: MA/MS/MSW/PhD/MD/DO from accredited institution in health/behavioral science field CEDRN: BSN, MSN or DSN from an accredited institution OR a BS in a related health care field (psychology, social work, etc.) and an Associate s degree in nursing from an accredited institution and 3 semester credits in professional practice standards and ethics. (If your academic degree did not include this, you may take iaedp s online ethics course to meet this requirement.)
6 CEDS: Licensed or certified as a healthcare professional by his/her state s licensing/certification board CEDRN: Licensed as a RN/APN by his/her state s licensing/certification board with ongoing maintenance of this licensure with approved CEUs
7 Education: BS or higher in nutrition and/or dietetics from an accredited university with the completion of the coordinated undergraduate program, a fifth year dietetic internship, or MS/dietetic internship combination Registration: Successful completion of the Dietetic Registration examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD status) and ongoing maintenance of this registration with approved CEUs.
8 Applicant meets all educational requirements necessary for national certification that are appropriate to his/her discipline (Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy) Certified or registered nationally as a creative arts professional in music, art or dance/movement by the national Music, Art or Dance/Movement Certification Board. Renewal of certification maintained as required by the appropriate Certification Board (Certification Board for Music Therapists [CBMT], Art Therapists [ATCB), or Dance/Movement Therapists [DMTCB])
9 Letter from the appropriate credentialing body that acknowledges the applicant is certified or registered by the appropriate standards and that he/she is recognized as in good standing is required and must be included in the completed application.
10 2500 supervised patient care hours directly in the field of eating disorders All patient care hours must be supervised by an iaedp Approved Supervisor. Two options exist for selection of an approved supervisor: Choose an iaedp Approved Supervisor by searching the iaedp Membership database online Use a current supervisor with whom you work who meets the requirements for an iaedp Approved Supervisor Note: a supervisor is not required to be iaedp-certified to qualify.
11 Professionals pursuing Traditional Certification are required to be supervised by a qualified professional who has completed the iaedp Approved Supervisor application process. Up to 500 of the total 2500 can be accrued during your internship prior to obtaining your license All applicants must receive supervision from an Approved Supervisor within their own discipline for 75% or > of total post-internship patient care hrs. Up to 25% of total post-internship patient care hours can be supervised by an Approved Supervisor in another discipline. Check out Approved Supervisor Options and Guidelines handout,
12 Professionals pursuing Traditional Certification are required to be supervised by a qualified professional who has completed the iaedp Approved Supervisor application process. Regarding fees and frequency: Each supervisor sets his or her own fee schedule and frequency of supervision, based upon the applicant s experience and clientele. Regarding mode of supervision: Each supervisor sets his or her own preference for either in-person, on-line or by telephone/skype supervision, based upon the geographical location.
13 Professionals pursuing Traditional Certification are required to be supervised by a qualified professional who has completed the iaedp Approved Supervisor application process. Applicants may use the Applicant Log for Patient Care Hours to keep up with personal log of total supervised hours. Supervisor completes the Approved Supervisor Documentation Form to verify and sign off on all patient care hours. Applicant mails Supervisor s documentation form along with completed Application packet to iaedp when ready.
14 Professionals pursuing Traditional Certification are required to be supervised by a qualified professional who has completed the iaedp Approved Supervisor application process. An iaedp Approved Supervisor is defined as a professional in the field of eating disorders who: is not one s primary personal therapist has a minimum of (5) years experience treating persons with eating disorders has a minimum of 6000 hours of approved work experience in the treatment and diagnosis of eating disorders holds an accredited Masters degree or higher if mental health professional; Bachelors degree or higher if Registered Dietitian, Bachelors or Masters per state requirements if Art, Music, or Dance/Movement Therapist or Registered Nurse is an iaedp Member Licensed by his/her state licensure board as appropriate
15 Due to an increased demand for iaedp Approved Supervisors, you do not have to be certified by iaedp prior to becoming an iaedp Approved Supervisor as of June 1, Professionals interested in providing supervision for those seeking certification will need to submit the following: iaedp Approved Supervisor Application (available at under Certification or Quick Links) One-time application fee of $ 75 iaedp Membership Note: No Renewal is Required Random audits will be conducted by iaedp every 2 years Audits will verify iaedp membership, qualifications, licensure and ethical standing
16 Signature by Approved Supervisor states the applicant: 1. Is familiar with and knowledgeable of every diagnosis related to eating disorders as outlined by the DSM5 2. Possesses strong communication skills as evident in the relationships between clients and clinician 3. Is aware and prepared to meet the specific needs and challenges of different ages, gender and family structure, as applicable, of each individual client presenting with an eating disorders 4. Is comfortable and effective in communicating within a multi-disciplinary eating disorder treatment team 5. Is proficient at both individual and group patient care settings, where applicable.
17 Two Options for Core Courses iaedp Pre-symposium Core Course Workshop iaedp On-line Core Courses Four Core Courses Required Introduction to Eating Disorder Treatment Modalities for Eating Disorders Nutritional Aspects of Eating Disorders Medical Aspects of Eating Disorders Once Completed, Core Courses Valid for 2 Years
18 Case study must be of a patient with whom applicant has completed treatment Case study must be 1500 word-minimum (2 to 3 single-spaced pages) Case study must not include any information that would compromise patient confidentiality See Case Study Guidelines ( for details of content
19 All Traditional applicants for the CEDS, CEDRD, CEDCAT and CEDRN are required to take and pass the Certification Exam. Complete all (4) core courses before taking exam Recommend taking the exam as soon as possible after completing the core courses The exam is available at under the Online Institute tab A passing score is good for 2 years Examination fee of $75.00 required Exam must be completed in one sitting with a maximum of 3 hours to complete Exam can be retaken up to 3 times; however, the third time requires an additional payment of $75.00.
20 Supporting Documentation and Forms Three letters of recommendation from experienced peers in the field of eating disorders One must be from clinician within own discipline All must include name, title and place of employment Signed statement of ethical principles Transcript NO LONGER NECESSARY if active license Demonstration of active commitment to professional organizations through involvement in iaedp or other eating disorder related organizations Photocopy of current licenses, one passport photo Iaedp membership Fee of $150.00
21 See Certification or Quick Links for the following information: Equivalency Requirement Checklist Equivalency Certification Application Equivalency is an option for licensed professionals who: have been practicing in the field of eating disorders for five (5) or more years are able to demonstrate eating disorder proficiency and expertise through a range of equivalency requirements Designated actual work experiences are accepted as the equivalents for the Traditional certification requirements No core courses, exam, or case study are required in lieu of actual experience as specifically stated. Approved supervised hours are not required in lieu of the applicants themselves providing documentation of five or more years of supervisory experience for other clinicians
22 Advanced Education and Licensure Requirements The education and licensure requirements for Equivalency are the same as the requirements for Traditional certification for each recognized discipline. See the website for the appropriate checklist: CEDS, CEDRD, CEDCAT or CEDRN.
23 Behavioral Skills Equivalency demonstrated by one (1) or more of the following: Significant* history of presentations at eating disorderrelated workshops, conferences and events to include both professional and community speaking opportunities. (*Per the discretion of the certification committee in terms of the experience level of audience and/or frequency of presentations) Significant history of published books, book chapters, peer-reviewed or trade articles and consumer publications on eating disorders Academic affiliation and instruction on eating disorders, to include adjunct professorship, guest lecturer, or program coordinator for educational institutions Participation in eating disorders research
24 Supervision Equivalency Supervised others who treat eating disorders for at least 5 years as a licensed clinician yourself Includes formal/informal individual, group and peer supervision and treatment team consultations Application must include a list of supervision provided, noting location, dates (beginning and end), and to whom supervision was given Can include formal and informal individual, and/or groups, including patient care discussions within the treatment team Can be incorporated into CV or listed separately
25 Core Curriculum and Case Study Equivalency demonstrated by two (2) or more of the following: Supervised others who treat eating disorders for at least 5 years as a licensed clinician yourself Significant history of presentation on clinical topics at eating disorder-related conferences, workshops and events to include both professional and community speaking opportunities Significant history of published books, book chapters, peer-reviewed or trade articles and consumer publications on eating disorders Academic affiliation and instruction on eating disorders, to include adjunct professorship, guest lecturer or program coordinator for educational institutions Participation in eating disorders research History of program development in eating disorders
26 CEU Equivalency demonstrated by two (2) or more of the following: Continued attendance and/or presentation at eating disorder-related conferences, trainings, workshops, webinars and other educational events for professionals. Continued publication of books, book chapters, peerreviewed or trade articles and consumer publications on eating disorders Continued academic affiliation and instruction in eating disorders, to include adjunct professorship, guest lecturer or program coordinator for educational institutions Continued participation in eating disorders research Continued presence in the media as an eating disorders expert Continued appearance in the legislation and/or the courts of law as an expert witness regarding eating disorders

29 Upon receipt, all Certification and Approved Supervisor applications are reviewed by the iaedp staff All applications are reviewed for missing information All payment(s) are verified Membership is validated (can be sent in simultaneously with certification application) After complete application verified, it is sent to the Certification Committee for review Allow 90 days upon receipt for full review process Option to appeal to iaedp Board if application is denied
30 Certification is renewable every two years Completion of the Application for Renewal of Certification ( under Quick Links) Maintenance of iaedp Membership Payment of $150 renewal fee Recertification requires the following: Twenty (20) Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required by all disciplines. All CEUs must be related to the field of eating disorders Copies of CEU Certificates must be included Attendance at iaedp Symposium once every four (4) years, or two renewal cycles, is mandatory
31 Why attendance at a Symposium once every four years? Maintain professional relationship with certified members I.C.E. guidelines state that certifying body owns the certification of its members Iaedp is ethically, legally and professionally responsible for certified members Ensure consistency in continuing education quality Extension available with written request based on personal or professional circumstances
