1 Wastebuster Recycling Presentation for Waste Week 2016 Slide 1 - Introduction: 1. Introduce your class to the presentation What is recycling and why should we do it? 2. The image on the right is an image of the Wastebuster gang, from left to right Pedro Plastic, Carolina Cardboard, Penny Paper, Ollie Organics, Sam Steel and Walter WEEE, Gordon Glass. The two characters in the bin are Captain Busta and his side-kick lieutenant Pong. Slide 2 What does Recycling mean and what are the six R s? 1. Recycling means using things that have already been used, to make new things. 2. The 6 R s are: Rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle and refuse o Rethink: think twice about throwing something away o Reduce: Reduce the amount you use o Reuse: Reuse the item if possible does the item have another use? o Repair: Repair the item instead of throwing it away and buying something new o Recycle: Recycle materials be used, or is the produce mad from materials that are easy to recycle

2 o Refuse: this means not accepting things that are not the best option for the environment, e.g. is packaging really needed? 3. Tell the class that you are now going to play a game. Slide 3- Where does everything go which cannot be recycled: Landfill Q: Where does everything which cannot be recycled go? A: It gets sent to a landfill site nothing every get thrown away it all has to be put somewhere. A huge hole is dug up and the rubbish is buried in it. What do you think it smells like? Mix of old rotting food, plastic, paper and nappies. Would you like to live on top of that, or grow food on top of that? Thumbs up (Advantages) - Natural gas can be captured from the waste - When the landfill is complete, it can be made into a park or farm land - The waste requires very little processing (if any) before disposal, which saves energy and further resources, and reduces costs - Landfill does not require that much specialised equipment or the construction of large waste treatment facilities either, reducing costs compared to some other disposal methods Thumbs down (Disadvantage) - Landfill can damage the environment (water, air and soil) - Landfills take up a lot of land and take away habitats from animals - It does not look nice (visual pollution) - Rubbish lorries cause noise (noise pollution) - The soil can be blown away in winds (soil erosion and dust pollution)

Did you know that landfill space will run our in approximately 7 years, which is why it is so important to consider the 6 R s. 2. Ask your pupils if they can remember (RETHINK REDUCE REUSE REPAIR RECYCLE REFUSE) Slide 5 Sometimes the waste foes to an Incineration plan where the waste gets burned! Q: What is Incineration? A: Incineration is getting rid of waste by burning it at high temperatures. Around 9% of the UK s household waste is incinerated. Thumbs up (Advantages)

4 - The main advantage of using incinerators would have to be the significant impact they have on reducing the amount of waste going to landfill - Many incinerators reach temperatures which can destroy harmful toxic chemicals - Incineration can be used to produce electricity Thumbs down (Disadvantages) - Incineration can lead to a huge waste of important and finite resources being burned, which has many negative knock-on effects (e.g. more mining for precious materials, loss of biodiversity, further land pollution) - Incineration destroys resources that can easily be recycled - People do not want to live near incineration plants (due to visual and noise pollution) Source: Slide 6 WOW Fact! 1. The average household in the UK produces more than a tonnes of waste every year together, this comes to a total of 31 million tonnes per year which is the equivalent weight to three and a half double-decker buses, a queue of which would go around the world two and a half times! 5 Slide 7 - Team: Captain Busta and Lieutenant Pong. Mission: Landfill Site 1. Click on the image to watch the video (The film is about Captain Busta and his trusty Lieutenant Pong that have been sent to Earth by the Intergalactic Wastebuster Federation on a wastebusting mission. Earth is on the endangered planet list because people are wasting all its resources and polluting its environment. 2. Play the film and let your pupil s know that there will be questions on the next slide so they have to watch carefully. Slide 8 Questions 1. Q: What was Busta doing? A: Busta hears a noise and things that it was Pong. Pong tells him that it wasn t and that it was coming from a nearby area. Busta gets on his skateboard and skates to find where this mysterious noise was coming from. 2. Q: What animals did Busta see flying around the landfill site? A: Seagulls. (Tip: although seagulls are here, it is not a positive sign; they can become injured from the rubbish and harmful chemicals on the site) 3. Q: What else did Busta see on the site? A: A rubbish truck, lots of rubbish, spoil heaps etc. 4. Q: Did Busta like the smell of the landfill site? A: No, the methane from rotting debris was not pleasant.

6 Slide 9 - The following things that can be recycled in the home can be recycled into other things, can you guess what they can become? 1) The next few slides will show a range of different materials found around the house, in the bathroom, kitchen and all around. 2) Ask your pupils to see what they think these materials can be recycled into. To find out what is recycled in your area, please visit: Slide 10 Paper and Cardboard 1. Paper and Cardboard, including: newspaper, cardboard boxes, magazines, paper backs etc

7 Slide 11 Can be recycled into 1. Paper and cardboard, if recycled, can be made into a number of fantastic things Paper board and new cardboard material, toilet paper, facial tissues, and new cereal boxes! Remember, if we recycle it means that we can save precious resources and materials as we are re-using the materials we already have! Slide 12 Plastics and Aluminum 1. Plastics and Aluminium, including: drinks cans, milk bottles etc.

8 Slide 13 Can be recycled into 1. Plastics and aluminium, if recycled can be made into: new bikes, new drink cans and even car parts! Remember, if we recycle it means that we can save precious resources and materials as we are re-using the materials we already have! Slide 14 Glass 1. Glass: drink bottles, perfume bottles and other glass materials

9 Slide 15 Can be recycled into 1. Glass, if recycled, can be made into: NEW GLASS! Remember, if we recycle it means that we can save precious resources and materials as we are re-using the materials we already have! The Recycling Relay Game You will need: Slide 16 Let s Play a Game! 2 recycle bins, 2 rubbish bins, various pieces or recyclable and non recyclable litter. Place the items of rubbish around the room and get the runner from each team to collect each item of rubbish and put it into the correct bin. Instructions: - Show the recycling container and rubbish bin at the front of the assembly hall - Hold up examples of items that can and cannot be recycled at your school - Ask the pupils to shout recycle or bin depending on whether or not each item you hold up can be recycled - Put each item in the correct bin and offer an explanation/correct misunderstanding if required - Tell the children that you are splitting them into two groups - Choose two children, one from each team, to be Busta s helpers and ask them to come and stand at the front of the hall

10 - Explain that these children will be the runners for their team and that their task it to put as many of the things Busta has placed on their side of the room into the correct bin in 2 mins - The 2 helpers will start from the front of the assembly hall. They will collect 1 item at a time, bring each item up to the front, hold it up, put it in the right bin and then go up to the next one - The rest of their team, who are sitting down can help by shouting out recycle or bin when their team runner holds up the item they have collected at the front of the hall The team with the most items at the end of the two minutes is the winner. Monitor this as you go you might want to have a flip chart to write up a tally during the game or allocate a staff member to supervise each team and keep score Download the set of rules here Slide 17 Learn the Recycling Dance with Captain Busta and his sidekick Liutenant Pong! 1.
