MISSION STATEMENT Campus Recreation programs serve to enrich student life by offering a broad range of activities. Designed to meet the varied needs of the entire campus community, the program provides experiences that allow individuals the opportunity to learn and participate in sport. THE PROGRAM The Intramural Sports Program offers all McGill students as well as staff and alumni with Sports Complex memberships the opportunity to participate in competitive sport. Individuals are encouraged to participate in the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. LEVELS OF PLAY Most sports are divided into three categories: Men s, Women s, and Co-Recreational leagues. Individuals may not participate on two teams within the same league. However, participation in a gender league (men or women) and a co-recreational league is permitted. Refer to the athletics website for more information on the leagues offered by sport. Each league is divided into three levels (divisions) of play: Competitive, Intermediate, and Recreational. COMPETITIVE DIVISIONS: Highly competitive, participants have several years experience in an advanced setting for that sport. Following regular season play, top teams in the standings will advance to a single elimination playoff in order to crown a champion. All eligible members of the championship team will receive a McGill Intramural Mug. The number of teams advancing to the playoffs will depend on the size of the division. INTERMEDIATE DIVISIONS: Moderately competitive, participants have several years experience in an organized setting for that sport, however may not be as skilled as players in the competitive league. Following regular season play, top teams in the standings will advance to a single elimination playoff in order to crown a champion. All eligible members of the championship team will receive a McGill Intramural Mug. The number of teams advancing to the playoffs will depend on the size of the division. RECREATIONAL DIVISIONS: Non-competitive participants participate in a recreational setting. Participants have little to no experience in the sport. The league ends at the conclusion of the regular season, there is no playoff structure. However, teams in the recreational division will play an additional regular season game.

ELIGIBILITY a. The following individuals are eligible to participate in the McGill Intramural program: 1. All full-time McGill University students 2. McGill staff who have purchased a Sports Complex membership for the duration of the sport season. 3. McGill alumni who have purchased a Sports Complex membership for the duration of the sport season. 4. Continuing Education students who have purchased a Sports Complex membership for the duration of the sport season. All staff and alumni wishing to participate in the intramural ICE HOCKEY league must purchase a five month Sports Complex membership (October - February) b. Intercollegiate athletes are eligible to participate in the program, however, they may not participate in a sport for which they represent the university during the current academic year. Individuals are ineligible to participate in an intramural sport after having appeared on a varsity roster for one or more regular season or playoff games. c. All intramural participants are required to present their valid McGill ID. card to the timer prior to the start of every game. Failure to comply with this rule will prevent the individual from participating in that game. NO ID. - NO PLAY! d. Players must check-in with the timer prior to half time. Once the second half of game has begun, players will not be allowed to participate nor sign-in for that game. e. Once an individual has played for a particular team, he/she becomes a permanent member of that team. An individual may only play for one team at one level within a particular sport. (e.g. you are not allowed to play for a Men s A team and a Men s B team. However, individuals may play for a men s or women s team and a co-rec team if the league has a co-rec division). Any player caught playing for multiple teams will receive a minimum 1-game suspension (with the possibility of a longer suspension depending on the number of games played), and be forced to play for the higher calibre team. Repeat offenders will lose playing privileges in the intramural program. f. A team will forfeit any contest in which it uses or attempts to use an ineligible player. Both the player and team captain will be subject to suspension from the program. g. A player using or attempting to use an assumed name or false McGill identification card will be subject to suspension from the program. In addition, the individual lending his/her McGill ID. card is subject to suspension from the program, and also may be required to appear before a disciplinary officer of the University. h. The team captain is responsible for checking the eligibility of all team members. Questions concerning eligibility should be directed to the league coordinator. i. In a 4-game regular season, team rosters are finalized once the third game begins. In a 5-game regular season, team rosters are finalized once the 4 th game begins. In a 6-game regular season, team rosters are finalized once the 4 th game begins. In a 12-game regular season, team rosters are finalized once the 8 th game begins.

TEAM CAPTAINS Team captains are participating members of their teams. They assume leadership roles in the organization and administration of their teams. In addition, captains are responsible to: a. Ensure that the names of all players present at the game appear on the game sheet before each game. This must be done even in the event of a default. k. Verify and sign the game sheet after each game (ensure all team members have correctly checkedin before signing). l. Keep in touch with the Campus Recreation Office. Up-to-date schedule information is placed on the Intramural Website ( on a daily basis. For playoff information and schedules, captains must contact the league coordinator, the Campus Recreation Office or check the website. m. Being a team leader. This individual is responsible for the organization of the league. Communication with the coordinator should be via . REGULAR SEASON & PLAYOFFS In the fall, each team will play 5 regular season games. In the winter, the regular season is a 6-game schedule. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top teams in the competitive and intermediate divisions will advance to a single elimination playoff structure in order to crown a champion. Points in the standings will be allotted as follows: 3 per win 1 per tie 0 per loss If two teams are tied in the standings, rankings will be determined based on the following order of criteria: 1. Head to head record (if applicable) 2. Goal average (difference between goals for and goals against) 3. Goals for 4. Coin toss If three or more teams are tied, rankings will be determined based on the following order of criteria: 1. Head to head record, only if all the tied teams have played each other. 2. Goal average (difference between goals for and goals against) 3. Goals for 4. Coin toss At the end of the regular season, the number of teams that qualify for the single elimination playoff will be

determined by the size of the division. Division of 4 or 5 teams = Top 2 teams advance Division of 6 to 12 teams = Top 4 teams advance Division of 13 to 22 teams = Top 8 teams advance Division of 23 to 40 teams = Top 16 teams advance Division of 41 teams or more = Top 32 teams advance To be eligible for the playoffs, players must have officially signed-in and participated in the following number of their team league games: 4 game schedule - 2 games 5 game schedule - 2 games 6 game schedule - 3 games 12 game schedule - 5 games COACHES Coaches are non-participating team members and therefore may not be team captains. Teams may have a maximum of two coaches. Coaches present at games must have their names appear on the team roster. They must sign in with their validated McGill ID. card with the timer before each game. FORFEITS If a team is unable to participate in a scheduled game, they may choose to forfeit. To register a forfeit, the team captain must notify the league coordinator at least two working days prior to the game in question. A forfeited game counts as a loss against the team s record and the recorded score is the same as a defaulted game (see below). There is no monetary penalty for a forfeited game. Members of both teams will be credited for their attendance. However, individuals on a team registering a second forfeit will not receive credit for attendance. DEFAULTS If a team fails to arrive at the game site with the minimum number of players needed to begin the activity (dressed and prepared to play) within five minutes of the scheduled start time, the official shall declare a default in favour of the team ready to play. Defaults result in expulsion from the league. Teams may, however, re-register by paying a default fee at the Campus Recreation office within two working days of the defaulted game. Attendance records must be kept of all players present and ready to play, even in the event of a default (Players on the defaulting team who arrive late will not be credited for their attendance). Teams that default a second game will be expelled from the league. The scores for defaulted & forfeited games are as follows: DEFAULT FEE $40.00 Ball Hockey: 5-0 Soccer (Outdoor): 3-0 Basketball: 20-0 Soccer (Indoor): 5-0 Flag Football: 14-0 Ultimate: 10-0 Ice Hockey: 3-0 Volleyball: 2-0 Innertube Waterpolo: 5-0

RESCHEDULING Due to the large number of teams in all sports and the relatively short seasons, rescheduling of league games is extremely difficult. The Intramural Program does recognize that certain circumstances may merit the possible rescheduling of a game. Rescheduling Procedure A written request, accompanied by a $10.00 non-refundable fee must be submitted to the Campus Recreation Office at least two working days prior to the game in question. Once a Rescheduling Form has been completed, submitted and the fee paid, the game in question will automatically be forfeited if it cannot be rescheduled. PROTESTS No consideration will be given to any protest involving a judgement call by an official. Legitimate protests involve rule interpretation and player eligibility. Protest Procedure If a team decides to protest a game, the game must still be completed. The protesting side must notify the officials at the time of the incident in question, that the game is being completed under protest. At the conclusion of the game, the official will give the captain a Protest Form to complete and sign. The Protest Form must be submitted immediately to the timer accompanied by a $15.00 fee. The Protest Form (attached to the score sheet), will be forwarded to the Chair of the Intramural Protest and Disciplinary Committee, c/o the Campus Recreation Office. Legitimate protests will be reviewed by the committee. If upheld, the Protest Fee will be refunded. All parties will be notified. POSTPONEMENTS Postponements of games due to inclement weather will be made no earlier than a few hours prior to game time. SPORTSMANSHIP The intent of the Intramural program is friendly competition. Self-control and proper conduct are required at all times. Unsportsmanlike or other unspecified, yet inappropriate behaviour, occurring during Intramural games will not be tolerated, and such actions will be handled by the Intramural Protest and Disciplinary Committee as quickly and fairly as possible, within the guidelines set forth below. At the conclusion of each game, teams will be given a sportsmanship rating from the officials. Teams will be judged based on; i) respect for the program and rules; ii) team conduct during the contest; iii) respect for the officials; iv) respect for the opponents DISCIPLINARY PROTOCOL

The Intramural Protest and Disciplinary Committee has the jurisdiction to suspend individuals from participation in the McGill Intramural Program. Action may range from forfeiture of the game, to probation, to expulsion from the program and/or facilities. Length of sanctions will depend on the severity of the offense. In order to deal with unacceptable behaviour which may be difficult to address within the rules of the game, a White & Black Card system has been adopted. This disciplinary protocol is to be used in conjunction with the rules of the game. White and Black cards will be used for ALL intramural sports to regulate and control the conduct of participants, teams and their spectators. These cards may be issued by game officials and/or campus recreation supervisors before, during or after a game. It will be left to the discretion of the Intramural Protest and Disciplinary Committee as to the severity of the penalty for each particular incident. A. White Card: Team or individual will automatically be put on probation. Spectators receiving a white card must leave the game site immediately. Failure to leave immediately will result in a Black Card. B. Black Card: Team or individual will be automatically be suspended from the intramural program. The team captain/player must meet with the Intramural Coordinator before being reinstated into the program regardless of the duration of the suspension. INDIVIDUALS RECEIVING A 2 ND SUSPENSION (WHITE CARD) OR A BLACK CARD WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY SUSPENDED FROM THE INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM. OFFENSE Obscene/abusive language Verbal threatening of an official Fighting Improper contact with an official DISCIPLINARY ACTION - minimum 2 game suspension - minimum 2 game suspension - minimum 2 game suspension - minimum 1 year Other occurrences will be judged on a case by case basis. ANY PLAYER WHO RECEIVES A MAJOR PENALTY DURING THE PLAYOFFS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SUSPENDED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE POST SEASON NOTE: Abuse of an official, whether physical or verbal, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely. The use of alcohol by intramural participants is strictly prohibited before, during, and after an intramural activity taking place in the one of the Sports Complex venues. Individuals who are caught will be subject to disciplinary action. EQUIPMENT Most equipment for intramural activities is supplied. Please note that this equipment is NOT

available on a loan or rental basis outside of scheduled intramural activities. Hockey equipment is available on a rental basis for use in intramural games. Individuals wishing to rent hockey equipment must purchase a Rec Activities Card from the Client Services Office (G-20C) of the McGill Sports Complex. Equipment must be returned within 20 minutes of the completion of the game. Failure to do so may jeopardize an individual's borrowing privileges. REFUND POLICY An administrative fee will be charged for withdrawal prior to the registration deadline for that sport. No refunds will be issued after registration has concluded. To claim a refund, the receipt of payment must be presented at the Campus Recreation Office. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Students are employed throughout the year as intramural officials. Officiating allows for the development of leadership skills and self-confidence. Paid for their services, sports officials work on campus, providing a worthwhile service for fellow students. The Intramural program sets a high standard for the official. Each official is perceived as a vital part of the program. The quality of an intramural contest is directly related to the quality of the officiating. The Intramural office is eager to help interested individuals develop their officiating skills. Anyone wishing to become an official should apply to the Campus Recreation Office. Clinics for every sport are conducted prior to the season. Experience is an asset, but not a necessity. MEDICALS AND INJURIES Participants are advised to have a medical examination before participating in the Intramural Program. First-aid treatment for minor injuries is provided at the Winsor Clinic located in the Field house of the McGill Sports Centre. WAIVER McGill University, its staff and administration are not responsible for any and all claims of loss, damage or injury to persons or property, however caused, including negligence, to any party arising directly or indirectly from participation in the intramural program. Use of the facilities and participation in the activities of the program are entirely at the student s/member s own risk.
