The Health Information Program at UAS will prepare graduates for employment as Health Information Specialists. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates are eligible to take the national accreditation examination and receive the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Credential. Our program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Information and Information Management (CAHIIM) in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Professional Practices are included with several of our courses and a final Internship in Healthcare Management is scheduled at the end of the program. As often as possible, Professional Practices are scheduled at a facility in the student's home area. It is not; however, always possible for the student to obtain the necessary clinical experience within their home community so some students will have to travel to clinical sites. Professional Practices are scheduled during routine working hours and is important that students inform their employers of the possibility of release to complete the required experiences. Financial aid is available and students are encouraged to apply for assistance early in the year of initial enrollment. 4 Career Opportunities What is Health Information Management? Today professionals in every field rely increasingly on information to function effectively. Advances in technology have made the flow of information more available, more comprehensive, more useful. Advances in medical science, legislative reforms, computerization, and the necessity to enhance the management of health care delivery systems and health care costs have created an explosion in the demand for health care information specialists people with the knowledge and skills necessary to process, analyze, and distribute health care information in diverse practice environments. A career as a health information professional offers a unique opportunity to blend an interest in medicine with the multifaceted information management challenges of tomorrow. The Health Information Management program at the University of Alaska Southeast will prepare graduates for employment in this dynamic field. Graduates will be able to perform a wide variety of health information functions in various settings, including: Coding diseases and procedures, utilizing appropriate coding conventions and software, and generating reimbursement income for the facility Compiling, analyzing, and distributing statistics that support medical and administrative decision-making Managing various registries (Trauma, Cancer, Birth Defects) to meet the planning needs of various agencies Identifying and using a variety of information resources and technologies Organizing, analyzing and evaluating data according to established standards, and complying with laws and regulations for access to and distribution of data. In small health care facilities, health information professionals may have full responsibility for the operation of health information services. What kinds of jobs are available in this field? Employment opportunities abound for health information professionals. While many practitioners currently work in hospital settings, expanding opportunities for employment include those in ambulatory, long term, behavioral health facilities, industrial clinics, state and federal agencies, private industry, and educational facilities. The Health Information Management program at the University of Alaska Southeast prepares graduates for employment as health information specialists. The field has been identified as one of the top ten growth careers for the next decade by the Department of Labor. Graduates have a wide variety of possibilities in both type and location of employment, with career opportunities throughout the nation and internationally. How to Qualify What kind of training do I need for this job? The Health Information Management (HIM) program offers a web-based distance delivered Associate of Applied Science degree through the Sitka Campus of the University of Alaska Southeast, which prepares students for entrylevel positions as health information professionals. The curriculum has been distance delivered since the program s implementation in 1992, and is now designed for web-based delivery. The HIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Upon graduation, students are eligible to write the national certification exam; successful candidates earn the professional credential of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Are there any prerequisites to entering this program? Students without prior college are encouragedtotakesomegeneraleducation requirements prior to enrolling in HIM specific courses. Specifically, students are encouraged to take college level English and a computer course either before or concurrently with HIM courses. (See Degree Requirements on back page) Applicants should be aware that professional practices are part of HIM courses, and transportation to various health agencies for these experiences is the responsibility of the student. WHAT IS CODING? Coding is the translation of narration into numerical codes. For example, a health care provider lists diagnoses and procedures and these for billing, research, statistical, and administrative purposes must be translated into numerical codes. The two dominant coding systems are: ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification) and CPT-4 (Current Procedural Terminology, 4th Edition). ICD-10-CM/PCS will be offered beginning Spring term EMPLOYMENT: At present, the demand for entry-level coders is extremely high especially in acute care facilities. In addition, medical clinics, veterinary hospitals, long term care facilities, behavioral health facilities, and health care corporations also provide job opportunities. The HIM Coding Specialist Certificate will prepare graduates for positions in this dynamic and fast growing profession. CERTIFICATION: The national professional association (American Health Information Management Association) offers two certification exams for coders (Certified Coding Specialist and Physician Based Certified Coding Specialist). It is highly recommended that recent graduates of both the HIM program and the Coding Specialist Certificate acquire a minimum of three years experience prior to writing these non-entry based exams. PREREQUISITES: Admission to either the HIM associate degree program or the HIM Coding Specialist Certificate program are required before a student can enroll in coding courses. For students preparing for a national exam who want some additional academic preparation, the coding classes are available. We ask that at least one-half of Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 111 or equivalent) be completed, with medical terminology as a co-requisite, before enrolling in coding courses. 6 HIM CODING SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS HIM 135 Medical Terminology 3 cr. Designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the language used within healthcare settings. It gives students a foundation for communication with health care professionals and lay people. Focus is on terminology of body systems related to symptomatology, diseases and treatment. Evaluation by means of assignments, tests and a comprehensive final examination. Prerequisite: Regular admission status; Co-requisite: placement at ENGL 110 or higher HIM 190 CPT Coding 3 cr. Review of alternative classification systems. Major emphasis on HCPCS/CPT-4 ambulatory care coding. Clinical lab at an ambulatory care setting required. Brief overview of Ambulatory Patient Classifications (AVCs) and Resource Based Relative Values (RBRVs). Evaluation based on class participation, site visit, completion of unit assignments, tests and final examination. Prerequisites: Medical Terminology or concurrent; Anatomy & Physiology and admission to HIM program or departmental permission HIM 210 ICD-9-CM Coding 3 cr. Introduction to International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (for use in the U.S.A.). Use of integrated learning materials. Instruction in coding diagnoses and procedures, sequencing, and coding conventions. Review of complications and co-morbidities. Clinical Lab: Students will complete required lab at an acute care clinical site which will provide an overview of DRGs, interface between business office and HIM, optimizing reimbursement, coding quality studies, and working with physicians for DRG management. Introduction to coding software. Evaluation by means of class participation, unit and lab assignments, tests and/or final exam. Prerequisites: Medical Terminology; Anatomy & Physiology and admission to HIM program or departmental permission HIM 211 ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding 3 cr. An introduction to International Classification of Diseases (U.S.). Introduces coding of diagnoses and procedures, sequencing, coding conventions, and software. Professional practice experience: Students complete activities that provide an overview of Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG). Topics include the interface between business office and health information management to optimize reimbursement, coding quality studies, and working with physicians for DRG management. Provides practice in analyzing medical records to identify data elements to be coded. Prerequisite: HIM 272 and admission to HIM program or departmental permission HIM 215 Billing and Reimbursement 2 cr. Focus is on issues of billing and reimbursement for health care facilities. Includes an overview of the role of the health insurance specialist; third party payers such as Medicare, Medicaid, workers compensation and disability, Tricare and commercial insurance claims. Legal and regulatory considerations and ambulatory ICD-9 are covered. Students will complete a project focused on coding and reimbursement issues. Prerequisite: HIM 190 and admission to HIM program or departmental permission HIM 260 Data Quality & Reimbursement 2 cr. A continuation of HIM 210 with in-depth focus on coding issues. Introduction to data quality issues including coding validation, data accuracy, coding guidelines and training, and reimbursement issues including Diagnostic Related Groups (DRGs), Ambulatory Patient Classifications (APCs); Resource Based Relative Value Scales (RBRVs). Impact of coding accuracy and correct DRG assignment on financial stability of facility. Overview of specialist credentials: CCS and CCS-P. Prerequisite: HIM 210 (Students with required prerequisites, not enrolled in either the HIM degree or coding specialist certifi cate will be admitted on a space available basis only) HIM 272 Pathophysiology 4 cr. Introduces basic concepts underlying various pathological processes. Students draw on their knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology to understand how pathogenesis of disease occurs. Discussion of diseases, diagnostic process, appropriate testing, and various treatment options. Introduction to drug terminology, administration, toxicity, vocabulary, standards and references. May not meet requirements for nursing programs. Prerequisite: BIOL S111 and S112. Healthcare Privacy and Security This certificate was created in response to the increased complexity of data disclosure, particularly the full implementation of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It is offered via distance delivery and requires a minimum of 30 credits, 21 of which are specified HIM courses. Students are introduced to legal and ethical implications of data disclosure, and are given an overview of state and federal laws, client rights and responsibilities, contracts, corporate liability, and professional liability. 8 Certificate in Healthcare Privacy and Security This distance-delivered HIM Privacy and Security Certificate prepares students for employment in data access and disclosure. Students who complete this program are prepared to work in a variety of employment settings, particularly healthcare related facilities. Basic equipment requirements: access to computer high speed internet The Healthcare Privacy and Security course will also provide accredited professionals with a continuing education option. Currently, most HIM professionals must meet a minimum standard of 20 continuing education credits in a two-year cycle, and half of these must be in 6 core areas, one of which is External Environment, which includes regulatory issues. Health Information Technology (HIT) is a rapidly growing field at the intersection of information management, medicine and the business of healthcare delivery. HIT has become a focus of national attention due to rapid changes in technology that are redefining the environment for capturing and managing healthcare data, a dramatic surge in healthcare information and federal mandates to develop standardized Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and create regional health information networks. 10 HEALTHCARE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The Alaskan healthcare workforce needs to prepare its employees for the technology shift towards electronic health records. UAS offers an occupational endorsement in health information technology. Courses will train the healthcare workforce on the most current and emerging technologies including electronic health records (EHR). Students will learn the most recent federal requirements in privacy and security in EHRs. Through this program students will learn the fundamentals of healthcare information technology by focusing on the resources, devices, and methods used to acquire, store, retrieve and utilize electronic healthcare information. HIM 111 Introduction to Health Information Management An overview of health care systems and the health information management profession. Introduces data collection standards and data quality methods, forms design, patient record automation and control procedures, and health care statistics. Presents the uses of record content in reimbursement, risk management, and planning. Professional practice experience: Students use a virtual electronic health record environment to gain hands-on experience in the use of health information technology. HIM 181 HIM Emerging Technologies and Applications Introduces the use of electronic records and resources in today s health care environment. Presents an overview of automated health information management functions and emerging technologies. HIM 285 Healthcare Privacy and Security An in-depth review of federal and state regulations and laws, with emphasis on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 12 Health Information Management 1332 Seward Avenue Sitka, AK HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DESCRIPTIONS OF PROGRAMS The Health Information Management (HIM) program provides a course of study, using primarily distance delivery methodology, which prepares entry-level health information professionals. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates are eligible to write the national examination; successful completion of the examination leads to the professional designation of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The Coding Specialist Certificate prepares students for entry level coding positions in a variety of healthcare facilities. An entry-level coding credentialing exam is available through AHIMA, in addition to expertise level coding exams. The Healthcare Privacy and Security Certificate prepares students for employment in data access and disclosure across a variety of employment settings. The Healthcare Information Technology Occupational Endorsement prepares students to work in the field of Healthcare Information Technology including Electronic Health Records (EHR). This program will introduce the student to the fundamentals of healthcare informatics by focusing on the resources, devices and methods used to acquire, store, retrieve, and utilize electronic healthcare information. Students will explore interoperability and meaningful use in the field of EHRs. Both certificates and the occupational endorsement contain coursework that applies towards the HIM AAS degree. 19 FINANCIAL AID CHECKLIST Students are encouraged to apply for admission and financial aid six to nine months prior to the start of the intended semester of enrollment. Students who apply by the priority deadline or earlier, have enough time for financial aid disbursement, timely credential evaluation for transfer students and academic advising and registration prior to the start of the semester. To receive most financial aid at UAS you must be admitted as a degree seeking student at UAS (not UA Anchorage or UA Fairbanks). Complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). In order to receive the Pell grant, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford loans, the Alaska Supplemental Education Loan, the Alaska Education Grant, or need-based scholarships, students must complete the FAFSA every year. The estimated cost of attendance used by the Financial Aid Office is based on an average cost for full-time attendance. If you attend less than full-time (12 credit/semester) then your budget and financial aid eligibility may both be reduced. Review your status online. You are responsible for checking the status of your financial aid to insure your processing is completed. Your financial aid file will not be processed until all required documents have been submitted. Incomplete files may delay the date which you receive your financial aid.
