Sportsmanship is a vital component for success in every Intramural competition. Participants are expected to display good sportsmanship toward opponents and the Intramural staff at all times. The Intramural Program has developed the Sportsmanship Rating System with the purpose of making each individual responsible for his/her actions while participating in any Intramural event. b. The rating scale is based on the following criteria: 4.0 A team that does not have any problems will receive a Very few complaints. No taunting or unsportsmanlike behavior exhibited towards the other team Occasional complaints. No taunting or unsportsmanlike behavior exhibited towards the other team Occasional complaints, but doesn t get penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior Team complains more frequently, but doesn t get penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior One or several warnings for unsportsmanlike behavior, but NO unsportsmanlike conduct penalties Highest grade a team may receive if issued an unsportsmanlike behavior penalty. This is for teams that receive one unsportsmanlike behavior penalty, but are exemplary otherwise No more than two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. No ejections. Captain tries to help the situation No more than two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. May be given if one player gets ejected and it s the ONLY problem with the team Single ejection or multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Captain has some control over team Single ejection or multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Captain has little control over team Single ejection or multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Captain has no control over team Multiple ejections. Captain has little control. Captain gets penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior. Highest rating a team can receive if the game was stopped due to sportsmanship or when receiving 3 or more unsportsmanlike penalties.

4 0.50 Multiple ejections. Captain has NO control over team and/or is not willing to work with IM staff. 0 Fighting, shoving officials, shoving supervisors. Multiple ejections or behavior so poor that it merits comparison to a fight or to actual contact of an employee. c. Each student participating on a team should choose his or her team members carefully, as all team members will suffer the consequences of any disciplinary action taken by the Intramural Director against a team or individual for violation of the rules. A team captain is responsible for actions of an individual member of the team, as well as for any spectators directly related to that team. This includes the conduct of all players and spectators before, during and after the game. d. Teams must have a 3.0 or better average sportsmanship rating to be eligible for play-offs (in addition to having a.500 or better win/loss record and no forfeits). However, a default will not affect a team s sportsmanship rating. e. If a player is ejected from the game, the offending team cannot receive a sportsmanship rating higher than a f. During the play-offs, if a winning team receives a 1.50 or lower for sportsmanship, the captain is required to meet with the Intramural Director before the team s next game in order to continue through play-offs. Failure to do so will result in an automatic disqualification from the league or a forfeit. In the case of a team having another game on the same day, the on-site Supervisor can make a preliminary decision, and then will contact the on-call Senior Supervisor for a final ruling. VI. VII. Play-offs a. A.500 record (and no losses by forfeit) along with a 3.0 (out of 4.00) sportsmanship rating are both needed for a team to qualify for playoffs. Teams who qualify for playoffs must be available to play on nights other than their usual night of play. If you have a conflict with a scheduled playoff evening, please contact the Intramural Office at as soon as possible. It is your responsibility to let the Intramural staff know of a conflict on a playoff night before playoffs are posted. The game must be played as originally scheduled unless both teams can agree to a new game time approved by the Intramural Office. i. No promises can be made about re-scheduling of games, but we will do our best to accommodate requests made before schedules are made and sent out. b. In the play-offs, semi-final and championship games, there is no cap for the tiebreaking game. The team must win by two points. USAV Rules apply in all situations not specifically covered by Intramural rules.

5 VIII. IX. Teams are responsible for being familiar with the Intramural Handbook and its guidelines. I.D. Check-in Policy and Procedure a. All students, staff and faculty MUST present a valid U of M identification card; non-affiliates will not be allowed to participate. b. There will be no exceptions to this policy. If you do not present a valid U of M id, you will NOT be allowed to participate in the Intramural games. c. Penalty for attempting or using a false id card will be suspension from the league.
