3 Getting started Nokia optical network units (ONUs) come with support for mobile applications that help to configure and retrieve the statuses of the residential gateway (RGW) more intuitively. The app is supported on Android and ios platforms and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for Android and from the Apple App Store for ios. The mobile application allows you to configure most of the features of the RGW and also helps to check different statuses of the ONT. The following is a list of features and statuses that can be configured and retrieved using the RGW mobile application. 4 Login To access and configure certain features of the ONT, log in to the ONT. 1. Connect the smartphone to the Wi-Fi interface of the ONT. 2. Open the digital ONU application. 3. Enter the username and password in the login window, as shown in [Figure 1]. If logging in to the app for the first time, use the username and password provided on the back of the ONT. 4. The toggle button can also be clicked to show advanced options for login. A field for inputting the ONT IP address pops up. The default value is The field can be edited if needed. Figure 1 5. 5 Dashboard 1. After logging in to the app, the dashboard screen appears [Figure 1]. 2. The dashboard shows the ONT status, URL blocker status and the firewall status. Clicking on any of these options takes you to the respective windows. 3. The dashboard screen shows the online and offline count of devices. 4. Click on Show Advanced Options to go to the various windows of the ONT. 5. You can also access the menu by swiping the mobile app page to the right. The side menu includes the following options: a. 6 How to set up your wireless network To connect the Wi-Fi enabled devices in your home network to the ONT and the internet, you must enable and configure a wireless network on the ONT. Depending on the type of the ONT, the Wi-Fi options for wireless 5 GHz may be available. Wireless 2.4 GHz This frequency range is used by the b/g/n standard and can provide widely available bandwidths of up to 450 Mb/s. This configuration can be done as follows: 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Wi-Fi. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with one or two submenus, depending on the type of ONT being used. 3. 7 4. The following window [Figure 3] opens. 5. Set the parameters as shown in Table 1. Table 1. Figure 3 SSID list Transmit power for ETSI is 100 mw. The active 2.4 GHz SSIDs. In this example, there are two: Home network and guest network. When you select one of the SSIDs listed, it allows you to modify the SSID details such as: Enable/Disable the SSID and SSID broadcast, name or rename the SSID, and set the encryption mode (OPEN, WEP, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise). 8 Wireless 5 GHz This frequency range is used by the ac standard and can provide high capacity bandwidths of up to 1.3 Gb/s. Configuration can be done as follows: 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Wi-Fi. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with two submenus. 3. Select Wireless 5GHz. 10 Where to find basic information for your device and network Device status and information In just a few clicks, you can quickly check the status of the LAN or WLAN connection and see basic ONT information. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Fiber ONU Gateway. 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with four submenus. 11 Overview: Shows the status of each of the interfaces on the ONU (Wi-Fi, LAN ports) and the instantaneous throughput [Figure 3]. Device information: Displays the technical details of the ONU (software and hardware versions, serial number and overall ONU running time) [Figure 4]. LAN status: Displays overall status and the details on the LAN interface (TX/RX totals, IP Address, MAC Address) [Figure 5]. 12 How to set up a guest network Setting up a guest network is much the same as setting up your initial wireless network. You ll just need to select a different SSID from your initial network setup, enter a unique SSID (network name) and, if required, create a password for the guest network. Connecting other devices Sometimes equipment or applications in your home network may require traffic from the internet to be sent to them over a specific port. This is often the case with gaming consoles, for example, which requires you to configure port forwarding on the ONT. Figure 1 1. 13 3. The Port Forwarding menu allows you to add or delete new entries for port forwarding [Figure 3]. To add a new port forwarding entry you can select a predefined app setting or add a manual entry. Select the APP Name option to allow you to pick a pre-existing application for port forwarding. Alternatively, you can select Customer Settings to get your own port forwarding settings. Figure 3 4. 14 How to set up parental controls You can restrict access to or from the internet from within your home subnetwork in several ways: IP filter MAC filter Controlling access to websites IP filter IP filtering enables you to name the IP address of a device within your subnet (for example, x.x), and restrict the flow of certain types of IP data to or from that device, based on the IP address. Restricted content is discarded as it passes through the ONU. Figure 1 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 15 3. Select IP Filter. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. In this menu you can add a new IP address filter entry or modify an existing entry. Figure 3 4. Select the Mode option that will allow you to pick the filtering type [Figure 4]: Drop for upstream: Residential gateway will drop all traffic originating from the specified device. Drop for downstream: Residential gateway will drop all traffic with a destination to the specified device. 5. Select the Device option to allow you to either select a known device from the ONU memory or manually register a new device. 6. Select the Protocol option to allow you to select specific types of traffic for filtering or to filter all traffic. Figure 4 15 Nokia digital ONU mobile application user guide
16 MAC filter Equipment in your network is identified by the unique MAC address assigned to that device. You can restrict which devices have access to the internet according to their MAC address by allowing or blocking access for the devices listed (your choice). 1. 17 3. Select MAC Filter. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. In this menu you can enable or disable the MAC filter option in the ONU. You can block or allow lists of MAC addresses. Figure 3 4. Type in the MAC address you would like to filter on either the block or allow lists here [Figure 4]. The block option will block all listed MAC addresses from reaching the home network. 18 Controlling access to websites Also known as URL filtering, you can restrict (or permit) access to certain websites by using equipment in your network. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 19 3. Select URL Filter. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. This menu enables you to filter specific URL/web addresses at the ONU for all LAN devices. You can enable or disable this feature from this menu. If enabled you can select the mode of operation to either exclude or include URLs that will be filtered by the ONU, and add URLs (websites) that you wish to block or allow. Figure 3 4. 20 How to limit access to your network To protect your home network by limiting access of people outside of your network, set up the following security options: DMZ ALG Firewall DMZ and ALG A demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a firewall configuration to improve the security of your network. It enables the router to provide an added layer of protection for your local network by intercepting and filtering traffic into and out of your network. Figure 1 An application level gateway (ALG) provides application security by understanding the protocols used by the applications that it supports and inspects protocol packets of traffic passing through it. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 21 3. Select DMZ. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. You can enable or disable the DMZ in the selected WAN, or add and remove devices from the DMZ by selecting available devices from the Internal Client drop-down menu. Figure 3 4. Select ALG. 22 Firewall A firewall can protect your network against cyber-attacks from the internet. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 23 3. Select Firewall. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. In this menu you can modify the firewall security level of the ONU and enable or disable protection against attacks; for example, denial of service (DoS) attacks. Figure 3 23 Nokia digital ONU mobile application user guide
24 Advanced setup How to change the login password of the ONT You can (and should) change the password that is used to log in to the ONT to ensure others cannot gain unauthorized access to your router and settings. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 26 Advanced setup How to assign IP addresses to devices in your network Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) enables the ONT to function as a DHCP server that can automatically assign an IP address to devices in your network from a predefined range of addresses. This is beneficial when you have multiple devices to prevent duplicate addresses being assigned. Alternatively, you can manually specify a static (unchanging) IP address. To configure the ONT to function as a DHCP server and assign IP addresses: 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 27 Advanced setup 3. Select LAN. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. 4. Configure the LAN settings as follows: a. Modify the ONU IP Address. b. Modify the ONU Subnet Mask. c. DHCP Enable: Enable or disable DHCP on the ONU. d. Start IP: Modify the first IP address for the range of possible IP addresses to assign. e. End IP: Modify the last IP address for the range of possible IP addresses to assign. f. Lease Time: Modify the length of time (in minutes) during which the IP address will apply to a device before it needs to be renewed. Figure 3 g. Static DHCP Entry: Add/Delete static DHCP entries. When you click on Static DHCP Entry, the following screen appears [Figure 4]. 5. Click on Static DHCP Entry to view its configuration options. 28 Advanced setup 6. To create a new static IP address assignment, click on Add. The following screen [Figure 5] will appear. 29 Advanced setup How to set up a DNS A domain name server (DNS) translates user-friendly website addresses; for example, into the registered IP address assigned for that domain. Your computer uses a domain name server to look up the domain name you re trying to access. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. 30 Advanced setup 3. Select DNS. This menu shows the available DNS sites and provides the option of viewing each in more detail, adding new DNS sites or removing existing sites. Tap the DNS entry to view more [Figure 3]. Figure 3 4. To add a new domain on the DNS entry page, enter an original domain URL address and the new domain URL address. 32 Advanced setup How to set up a DDNS End users with internet access are assigned an IP address by their internet service provider (ISP). For most users, this address is dynamic, i.e., changes frequently. If you need to provide other users on the internet with an IP address where you can be reached (for example, if you are a hosting web service), the constantly changing IP address would be problematic. A dynamic domain name server (DDNS) can be used to map a URL address to your IP address. The ONU can be configured to provide regular address updates to the DDNS as changes occur. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows you to configure the following residential gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ, ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password. 33 Advanced setup 3. Select DDNS. The following screen will appear [Figure 3]. This menu shows the available DDNS on the ONU and gives the option to view the menu items in more detail. Click on DDNS to view more. Figure 3 4. In this menu [Figure 4] you can modify the specific DDNS settings such as enabling or disabling them, listing the specific ISP URL, domain name and username/password. 34 Advanced setup How to use a network clock to set the time on your ONU (NTP) Network Time Protocol (NTP) enables you to synchronize the time setting of your ONU with an external network time source. This menu allows you to enable or disable NTP settings on the ONU and modify/add the NTP servers used. You can also select different time zones for ONU login purposes. 1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings. Figure 1 2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2] with 12 submenus. 35 Advanced setup 3. Select NTP. This menu [Figure 3] allows you to enable or disable NTP settings on the ONU and modify/add the NTP servers used. You can also select different time zones for ONU login purposes. 4. To enable the NTP: a. Click on the toggle button on the NTP page with the Enable field in view. The toggle button glows green. b. Now add the NTP server by selecting a preconfigured server available from the drop-down list or input the server address by selecting custom settings. c. There is also an option to add a second NTP Server that can be used if the first server is down. d. Provide the interval time in the Interval Time input field provided. Figure 3 e. 36 Advanced setup Wi-Fi Analyser Checking Wi-Fi signal strength To check the signal strength of the Wi-Fi, take the following steps: 1. After login, click Wi-Fi Analyser in the side menu. The Wi-Fi Analyser screen will open [Figure 1]. 2. In the Analyser tab, there will be a list of Wi-Fi options. This list will keep on changing every 5-10 seconds. An empty option means the selected Wi-Fi option is out of range. Select the Wi-Fi SSID that needs to be analyzed. 3. Enter a name for the current location (for example, living room) in the location name field and click Save. Figure 1 4. Move to the next location in your home and repeat Step 3. Repeat Step 4 for each location in your home. 5. In the List tab [Figure 2], you will find the saved signal strength list of the selected Wi-Fi in the Wi-Fi Analyser tab.
