1 Digital Presentation Introduction The Digital Presentation This guide explores the myworld Social Studies Digital Presentations available on myworldsocialstudies.com. It explains how they help students connect, experience, and understand their world. myworld Social Studies includes click and play Digital Presentations for every chapter opener, every lesson, and every chapter review in the program. These Digital Presentations are found in the Chapter Opener folders, lesson folders, and Chapter folders online. The presentations support and reinforce the instruction found in the student worktext. They can also be assigned to students online for grading or can be used in a blended approach in your myworld Social Studies classroom. This guide explores features of the Digital Presentations from second and fifth grade. Second Grade: We Do Our Part Connect: Chapter Opener The following explains each of the components in the Digital Presentation in the myworld Social Studies second grade curriculum, We Do Our Part. The Chapter Opener or Opener Digital Presentation introduces students to the Big Question and provides a mystory Video, a song, and a mystory Spark activity. 1

2 Big Question The Big Question activities introduce the chapter s Big Question. They help students connect to the content by activating prior knowledge and by engaging them in each lesson. mystory Video In the mystory Video, students watch children their own age talk about the Big Question and the key ideas in the chapter. 2

3 Song The Digital Presentation for each chapter opener at Grades K 2 also presents an animated song that introduces students to some of the key vocabulary in the chapter. Prompts are provided in the Teacher Guide to help students make connections, draw conclusions, and focus on target reading skills associated with the song and the chapter content. mystory Spark The mystory Spark activity begins the mystory Book strand of the program, which takes students through the writing process. In the mystory Spark pre-writing activity, students record their initial ideas about the chapter s Big Question. You can also find the mystory Spark in the student worktext or in the Online Student Edition. 3

4 Experience: Lesson Every lesson within the chapter also has a whiteboard-compatible Digital Presentation. The Digital Presentation for each lesson includes a Lesson Introduction, Got it?, and mystory Idea. Lesson Introduction The Lesson Introduction reinforces the Big Question and the chapter s main idea. It also provides an objective or an I will know statement for the specific lesson. In this example, remind children of the discussion they had about the Big Question: How do people get what they need? Then, review the lesson s objective: I ll know the difference between wants and needs. 4

5 Got it? Got it? activities in the Digital Presentations provide a variety of fun, interactive exercises students can do to assess their understanding of the key objectives of the lesson. Students can check their answers after completing these assessments. Use the Support button to assist students who need additional instruction. mystory Idea The mystory Book writing strand concludes each lesson with mystory Ideas. With these questions, students revisit the Big Question after having learned more about it in the lesson. Students can also click the Support button to get a Helpful Hint or to complete a Challenge activity. 5

6 Understand: Chapter Vocabulary The Chapter or Closer Digital Presentation allows you to assess student understanding. It contains a Vocabulary, myworld Activities, and links to the online digital storybook. The Vocabulary allows students to review vocabulary found in each chapter. Students can also click the Support button to get Helpful Hints and additional vocabulary definitions. myworld Activities mystory Book myworld Activities online provide student instructions that include a checklist and a rubric. Each chapter has five activity cards. These small-group activities provide opportunities for students to demonstrate and transfer their understanding of the chapter content. The mystory Book writing strand culminates with a final writing activity in which students are able to write and illustrate their own digital book and to demonstrate what they learned in the chapter. 6

7 Fifth Grade: Building Our Country Connect: Chapter Opener At the fifth-grade level, the Digital Presentations offer additional instructional activities for each lesson. The following explains each of the components in the Digital Presentation in the fifth-grade myworld Social Studies curriculum, Building Our Country. The Chapter Opener or Opener Digital Presentation introduces students to a Big Question, a mystory Video, and a mystoryspark. These components help students establish personal meaning and connect to the content in the chapter. Big Question The Big Question activities introduce the chapter s Big Question. They help students connect to the content by activating prior knowledge and by engaging them in each lesson. mystory Video mystory Spark In the mystory Videos, students are led by peers on a video field trip or see a character from the chapter come to life in a graphic-novel style animation. The mystory Book strand of the program begins with a mystory Spark activity. In this pre-writing activity, students record their initial ideas about the chapter s Big Question. 7

8 Experience: Lesson Lesson Introduction Every lesson within the chapter also has a whiteboard-compatible Digital Presentation. The Digital Presentation for each lesson in fifth grade includes a Lesson Introduction, a series of Key Idea activities, Got it?, and mystory Ideas. The Lesson Introduction reminds students about the chapter s Big Question and introduces the lesson s main idea. It also provides an objective or an I will know statement for the specific lesson. In this example, remind children of the discussion they had about the Big Question: What is worth fighting for? Then, review the lesson s objective: I will know how the United States won its independence. Key Ideas Highly engaging Key Idea activities cover all of the major topics in each lesson. Lesson Five, Winning Independence, contains four Key Idea activities. The number of Key Idea activities varies in each lesson. In this example, students read a main idea and add supporting details to tell more about the main idea. 8

9 Got it? mystory Idea Understand: Chapter Vocabulary myworld Activities mystory Book Got it? are multiple-choice quizzes or drag-and-drop activities you can use to evaluate students understanding of the key objectives in the lesson. Students can get feedback after completing these assessments. Use the Need Help? button to assist students who need additional instruction. Students can also click the Support button to get additional help. The mystory Book writing strand continues throughout the chapter with mystory Idea. At the end of each lesson, students respond to this writing prompt. They revisit the Big Question each time they learn something new with mystory Idea. The Chapter or Closer Digital Presentation allows you to assess student understanding. It contains Vocabulary, myworld Activities, and mystory Book. The Vocabulary allows students to review vocabulary in the chapter. Students can also click the Support button to get Helpful Hints about the vocabulary and Challenge activities. myworld Activities online provide a printable PDF of student instructions that include a checklist and a rubric. Five activities cards are available for each chapter. These small-group activities provide opportunities for students to demonstrate and transfer their understanding of the chapter content.
