2 After David killed Goliath, King Saul let him join his army. David was a very brave soldier. He rose higher and higher in the army. He was successful in every battle. -1- One day, King Saul was on his way home. Women came to meet him and his soldiers. The women were dancing and singing a song. They sang, King Saul has killed thousands of men, but David has killed tens of thousands! The song made Saul very angry. He was jealous of David. He was worried that David would become king. -2- One day, David was playing his harp at King Saul s house. It was something he did often. It was something he was good at doing. As David played, King Saul was filled with anger and jealousy. All he could think about was the other song, the one the women had sung. So, in the middle of David s song, Saul took his spear and threw it at David! The spear missed David, and he escaped through a window. -3-

3 From that time on, Saul was determined to kill David. So David went to hide in the desert. There were men with him who were on his side. King Saul took three thousand of his men into the desert to look for David David and his men were hiding in a cave. King Saul did not know they were there. He had to use the toilet, so he went into the cave. David s men nudged David and whispered, There is King Saul. He is alone. He does not know we are here. Kill him while you have the chance. David would not do it. He is still God s chosen king, said David. It would be wrong to kill him Instead, David crept up behind King Saul and quietly cut off the corner of his robe. The king left the cave and walked away. Then David left the cave, too, and called out to Saul. Your Majesty! he shouted, holding the piece of the robe in the air. Look what I have! Saul looked. He was very surprised. You think I am your enemy, David called. You think I am against you. I had the chance to kill you. I was close enough to touch your robe, but I did not harm you

4 Saul knew that David was right. You are a better man than me, Saul sighed. I have treated you so badly, and yet you spared my life. One day, I am sure, you will be king. So promise me that you will spare my family, too. I will, David promised. Then the man who was king, and the man who would soon be king, went away in opposite directions
