Taking power to the garden is a realistic DIY job when using Blagdon Powersafe products. When you are planning to install power in your garden, you first need to decide what type of power option you require: Regular 3 pin sockets (weatherproof), Switchbox, Remote Control Socket Box, A combination of the above see page 11 for linking options. The first option is a socket box (specifically designed for outdoor use) into which you can directly plug and remove items that are fitted with a standard UK 3 pin plug i.e. Lawn Mower, Power Tools. The second option is a Switchbox which is the better option for more permanent power fixings, for example a pond pump, or garden lighting. The appliance is easily wired into the Switchbox and can be turned on or off at the box. 1

3 The third option is the Remote Control Socket Box. This system is already fitted with outdoor specific sockets (and comes with corresponding plugs) and has the advantage of working by remote control up to 100m from the main unit. This system gives you the opportunity to plug in your outdoor power items either permanently or temporarily. You can turn any one of your plugged in appliances remotely or at the unit itself. These outdoor power options can be fixed to your house, or mounted away from the home using armoured cable across the garden. See overleaf for measuring and planning guidelines. 4 Planning and Measuring out Planning the position of your sockets or switchboxes, and the route of your armoured cable (where applicable) is vital before you commit to selecting your Powersafe products. Below is a guide to measuring out your route (always follow the instructions included with the product for the final measurements and installation.). The example is for locating a Twin Socket away from the house. Products you require: Garden Circuit Breaker, Armoured Garden Power Supply (to length measured from guidelines below), Outdoor Twin Socket. STEP 1 - MARKING OUT Decide which mains socket to be used in the house/garage. The 9mm rubber cable supplied in the Armoured Power Supply is 5m long. Measure out 5m from a suitable mains power socket (house or garage) checking that there would be sufficient rubber cable to be fixed along the required route. The route should be to the exit point that you require into the garden and allow for enough cable to be passed through either the wall or door/ window frame allowing that the fixing bracket will be attached to a suitable external point 30cm minimum above ground level. Mark the location. Keep in mind that the rubber section of the cable should be run for the minimum distance possible outdoors. If the 5m of internal rubber cable is insufficient in length it may be replaced with a longer length of HO5RN 3 x 1.0mm core rubber cable. STEP 2 - DECIDE ROUTE OF THE ARMOURED CABLE The armoured cable plug will be connected to the rubber cable socket at the location marked previously. From the area marked, measure out the route of the armoured cable using a piece of rope as a template. The armoured cable may be routed above ground, along fences or walls (using the armoured cable cleats provided in the box) hidden through trees and shrubs or buried below ground at a minimum depth of 500mm (below a spade s depth). Remember to add the 1000mm to the total length if the cable is buried at any point, as well as any required for an upward lift to fix to a wall/fence. Mark the location that the armoured cable is to finish, (a minimum of 30cm above ground for safe ground clearance). Mark on a suitable hard point or post as the cable socket (end 3

5 point) will be mounted onto a wall/post bracket. Once you are satisfied that you have the full length of ground covered, as well as any additions considered, measure the length of your rope. Because the armoured cable section in the Power Supply is permanently pre-wired at the set length dictated at purchase (5/10/15/20m), you must chose the next size up from the length of your piece of rope to ensure sufficient cable along the route. i.e.: if your rope length is 8.2m you should purchase a 10m Power Supply. Do not forget to allow for any additional length required for burying the cable along the route. STEP 3 - LOCATION OF YOUR TWIN SOCKET To ascertain the end of the system and the location of your Twin Socket, add 40cm (maximum) above the previous point marked (end of the armoured cable). This is the maximum distance that the Twin Socket can be located from the plug and socket, see diagram 1. The Twin Socket should be situated where it is protected from: Flooding Extreme heat Physical damage If the Armoured Power Supply purchased is insufficient in length additional armoured cable sections are available. These can also be used to extend max an existing system with 40cm a Plug and Socket. The Powersafe Armoured Power Supply can be safely extended to a maximum length of 40m. Please see full instructions in the pack or the Plug and Socket Diagram 1 (instore or via our website) for extending a Power Supply. Other requirements: If you currently have any power product in the garden they must, by law, be run via an RCD. See the Blagdon Garden Circuit Breaker below. CAREFUL PLANNING SAVES TIME CONSUMING ERRORS For multiple installation options see page 11. POWERSAFE GARDEN CIRCUIT BREAKER Gives you and your family additional protection from the risk of electrocution. 25 milliamp trip current activation provides early warning of garden and pond equipment failure. Prevents household RCD activation on faults up to 30mA. Specific Garden Circuit Breaker working at 25mA means that your house mains electric supply (30mA) WON T be cut, should you experience an outdoor electrical fault (between 25-30mA). 6 TWO OUTDOOR SOCKETS WITH INSTALLATION KIT Powersafe Twin Socket Wall Kit Convenient and easy to install supply of power in the garden for 3 pin plugs (ordinary UK household plugs). It has the capacity for two x 3 pin plugs and has 1 x Powersafe plug outlet. One, or all, of the outlets can be used safely for garden electric items such as; Lawn mowers, strimmers, radios, shed/ greenhouse power items as well as water features and pond electrical items. The sockets are fully weatherproof to current safety standards, fuse protected with lockable covers to make the system extra safe for outdoor use. The sockets can be wall or post mounted, and also fit the Blagdon Garden Power Spike see page 8. The Socket Box can also be extended by adding another Socket Box, or Switchbox via the Powersafe plug outlet (link cable included) see page 11 for linking options. The Wall Kit has been designed as a complete wall installation system for the Powersafe Outdoor Twin Socket. Only basic DIY skills are needed. Always use the system in conjunction with a Powersafe Garden Circuit Breaker for safe and legal outdoor power.
