1 Certificate No: EW350 A.B. Chance Helical Piling System Description of Product This is an assessment of the A.B.Chance Helical Piling System for LABC registered detail approval. Sub Surface Technologies Ltd are the UK accredited supplier and administrator of this system. Helical Piles are steel shafts with a series of low-pitched circular steel helical plates welded at strategic positions along the shaft. 2 This is an assessment of the A.B.Chance Helical Piling System for LABC registered detail approval. Sub Surface Technologies Ltd are the UK accredited supplier and administrator of this system Scope includes new build projects, extensions and underpinning. The pile shaft transfers a structure's load into the pile. Helical steel plates are welded to the pile shaft in accordance with the intended ground conditions. Helices can be pressformed to a specified pitch or simply consist of flat plates welded at a specified pitch to the pile's shaft. The number of helices, their diameters and position on the pile shaft as well as steel plate thickness are all determined by a combination of: 1.The combined structure design load requirement 2.The geotechnical parameters 3.Environmental corrosion parameters 4.The minimum design life of the structure being supported or restrained. The system involves using pile caps which can be a Chance designed product or may be designed separately by a Structural Engineer. There is a direct comparison between the torque reading from the machine used to drive them in and the load required. The piles can only be installed by certified installers who have been trained. The system will have to be chosen by a design Structural Engineer and structural calculations/design will still be needed for each individual project. In addition they will have to confirm this is a suitable system for a project and also confirm approval post installation. For Buildings and Underpinning work. 1. Structural design to be provided to determine required load bearing capacity, pile choice (type, diameter, helix etc.) and pile cap design and intersection with proposed structure above. This may be submitted by the individual piling company engineer, Azimuth Structural Engineering Ltd (consultant engineer for Sub Surface Technologies Ltd) or an independent structural engineer. A design factor of safety of 3 for permanent loads should be used in all instances unless a pull test or load test is being carried out on site. In this instance the factor of safety may be reduced by design. 2. A chartered civil or structural engineer to accept responsibility for: Assessing and confirming the adequacy of the pile design after ensuring that the site investigation is adequate and/or a suitable probe pile is installed and the site conditions are appropriate. Validating the installation of the piles as a minimum by way of reviewing pile installation logs. Confirming the piles have been driven into suitable stratum and capable of taking the design loads, either by way of end bearing or Helical Pull down test methods. 3. A Chance/Sub-Surface Technologies Ltd approved installer to be used to carry out the works. Evidence of up to date certification should be provided on site 4. Product capacity end bearing and pile types to be in accordance with Appendix A & B of SCI report RT 1324 version 06 dated January A torque chart listing the drive head type in relation to required bearing capacity should be available on site for that being used on site.
