Three Steps Toward Helping Struggling Readers: Assessment, Intervention, and Instruction Teachers teach children, not programs. Almost all the conventional ways of referring to children who find literacy learning difficult imply a weakness in the children. We take the position that teaching must be designed to meet the needs of each child and that educators must constantly search for effective ways to serve the children they teach. Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell STEP 1 Assessment Assess and understand students reading performance with Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System 1 & 2 One-on-one, comprehensive assessment for determining independent and instructional reading levels, for placing students on the Fountas & Pinnell A-Z Text Gradient, and for connecting assessment to instruction with The Continuum of Literacy Learning. STEP 2 Intervention Address student needs with 300 systematically designed lessons based around carefully leveled, original books Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention Small-group, intensive, supplementary intervention system designed to bring struggling readers and writers to grade-level competency in weeks. STEP 3 Instruction Inform and differentiate your teaching with exemplary classroom resources. Fountas & Pinnell Professional Books Fountas and Pinnell s teaching tips, smart strategies, proven classroom ideas, and professional-learning opportunities will lead the way as you discover how to help readers develop effective systems of strategic actions over time. 2
ASSESSMENT Professional Support for the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System Course goal To train teachers and staff in administering the Benchmark Assessment System Focus Assessment, placement, and connecting assessment to instruction Our teachers have enthusiastically embraced the F&P Benchmark Assessment System as it is easy to use, well organized, and provides a wealth of information regarding a child's reading strategies and development. The information gained from the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System enables our teachers to select reading materials that closely match their students' instructional levels, and to plan instruction to build on their skills as readers. Director of Elementary Education, Frontier Regional School District, Massachusetts Available for both System 1 (Grades K-2) and System 2 (Grades 3-8), Benchmark Professional Support introduces participants to the thinking behind the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, provides training on how to administer and analyze the assessment, and helps participants understand instructional and grouping implications. Through demonstration, guided practice, and discussion, teachers will gain a deep understanding of the system, including how to: administer, code, and score a Benchmark reading assessment determine independent, instructional, and placement levels of readers using the Fountas and Pinnell A-Z Text Gradient analyze a child s reading performance including reading comprehension, reading rate, and word analysis to assess the reader s current processing system. A Spanish edition of Benchmark System 1 will be available Spring
INTERVENTION Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) Professional Support Course goal To train teachers in implementing the LLI system to move struggling readers forward Focus Intervention for struggling readers Save 20% on LLI Professional Support when you purchase the LLI product at the same time. Call , ext Once you ve assessed your readers needs, intervention can raise their performance. The groundbreaking new Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) is a research-based, supplementary intervention system designed to help teachers provide powerful, daily, small-group instruction for the lowest achieving students in the early grades. LLI Professional Support includes three days of training (two days of intensive learning plus one follow-up day) to give participants an in-depth understanding of each of the three LLI Systems. Each supports instruction at different levels on the Fountas & Pinnell A-Z Text Gradient. Orange, Levels A-C (Kindergarten) 70 lessons with 70 original titles Green, Levels A-J (Grade 1) 110 lessons with 110 original titles Blue, Levels C-N (Grade 2) 120 lessons with 120 original titles In the years I have taught using the LLI model, I have watched children who used to find literacy activities difficult delve into reading and writing with enthusiasm and independence. The students' awareness of their own growth and competencies is mirrored by their classroom teachers. Reading Recovery teacher, Boston Public Schools 4
Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) has had an awesome impact on my district s Reading Intervention Program. As the District State and Federal Programs Coordinator and Reading Intervention Supervisor, LLI has improved the rate at which students exit the program on level. In this age of accountability, teaching our students to become readers and writers is the first step to success. Coordinator, State and Federal Programs, Southwestern City Schools, Ohio Topics covered include an overview of the Lesson Framework, assessing and grouping students, teaching within the LLI lessons, using the Prompting Guide, understanding the demands of texts, and documenting progress. In addition to learning how to implement LLI, participants will deepen their understanding of many research-based techniques to help struggling readers make accelerated progress. Finally, there is an intervention system that addresses the essential aspects of literacy through a variety of instructional approaches and includes the professional development that helps teachers make the best decisions for children. Our students, many of whom are second language learners, are now achieving grade level expectations! As a District Language Arts Supervisor I am confident that our students who are experiencing the most difficulties will receive the highest quality assessment and expert teaching that is aligned with our rigorous district goals. 8 INSTRUCTION Introduction to The Continuum of Literacy Learning, Grades K-8 Course goal To learn how to use the Continuum as a tool for assessment and planning Focus Using the Continuum as a tool within the different curriculum Where other assessment and benchmark systems leave you wondering Now what? Fountas and Pinnell provide a link from assessment to instruction via classroom practices such as guided reading and read-aloud. The Continuum of Literacy Learning: A Guide to Teaching is included with the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and provides the basis for this seminar. The course explores how The Continuum can be used as a tool in the teaching of reading and writing, and in setting goals for learning while planning lessons for individuals, small groups, and the whole class. Discover how The Continuum can be used as a bridge in connecting your assessment data and your instruction, as well as how it can serve as a guide for evaluating student progress over time, helping you identify the specific areas in which students need help. Two full days are recommended for this course in order to fully cover The Continuum. A focus on the reading continua during the first day and the writing continua during the second day is strongly recommended. Our consultant will work with you to decide which topics will be addressed each day. Topics may include: Systems of Strategic Actions Interactive Read Alouds (IRA)/ Literacy Discussion (LD) Continuum Shared and Performance Reading Continuum Guided Reading Continuum Writing About Reading Continuum Writing Continuum 6
When Readers Struggle: Teaching That Works Grades K-3 Course goal To develop effective practices for supporting low achieving readers Focus Understanding reading behaviors and development Effective teaching begins with assessment and focuses on the strengths and needs of individual children. All teachers need to learn how to teach the lowest achieving children well, and to learn how to use behavioral evidence to document their growth. Drawing from Fountas and Pinnell s newest book (included in the LLI System), When Readers Struggle, this seminar will address the range of difficulties that interfere with literacy learning in the primary grades. Beginning with the reading behaviors of proficient readers, participants will learn how to observe and analyze the critical behaviors that keep lower achieving readers from initiating and problem-solving successfully as they read. By understanding reading behaviors and how to respond with language that supports the reader s development, teachers will learn to plan multiple layers of intervention to assure reading success. Seminar participants will learn how to use When Readers Struggle as a comprehensive and practical resource to support effective teaching of low achieving readers. 7
INSTRUCTION Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Grades K-8 Course goal To study comprehension and fluency in-depth across various instructional contexts: whole group, small group, and individual teaching Focus Readers, texts, and teaching As a companion text to The Continuum, Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency further explores how each curriculum component, including interactive read aloud/literature discussion, shared and performance reading, guided reading, and writing about reading, supports the reading and writing process. Participants will gain an understanding of the components of an effective literacy program and how they translate into whole group, small group, and individual instruction in both the primary and intermediate grades. This seminar provides an exploration of how students think within, beyond, and about the text to process the full meaning of a text. Teachers will acquire a basic understanding of how all experiences and instruction within the literacy framework is grounded in the reading process. Topics may include: Readers: Helping Students Build a System for Processing a Variety of Texts Readers: Understanding Fluency Texts and Teaching for the whole group: Interactive Read Aloud Texts and Teaching for the whole group: Independent Reading Texts and Teaching for the whole group: Shared and Performance Reading Texts and Teaching for the small group: Literature Discussion Texts and Teaching for the small group: Guided Reading Writing About Reading 8
Phonics Lessons and Word Study Lessons, Grades K-3 Fountas and Pinnell s firsthand publications Phonics Lessons and Word Study Lessons reflect the most current research on child and language development, and support the kind of instruction that emerging readers need. In this seminar, teachers will begin with an instructional and theoretical overview of these powerful resources and move toward understanding and developing a continuum of learning about letters, sounds, and words. They will discover activities designed to help them plan and implement effective lessons for teaching phonics, spelling, and vocabulary, as well as the important role poetry and literature play in supporting children s development of letter and word knowledge. 9
INSTRUCTION Guided Reading Grades K-3 Course goal To gain an introduction to guided reading, to promote independent learning, and to build a foundation for understanding reading behaviors in grades K-2 Focus On the basic components of a guided reading lesson, how to analyze running records, and how to provide various levels of support to early readers as we help them develop systems for processing text Learn how to create an effective literacy program based on guided reading and supported by read-aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and other approaches. In the Guided Reading seminar teachers explore the reading process and how it is supported throughout a guided reading lesson. They will learn the framework of a guided reading lesson and how they can support comprehending and fluency throughout each element of the lessons. In addition, participants will learn about the gradient for leveled texts and will have the opportunity to analyze texts for the supports and demands across the gradient. This course also focuses on classroom management during guided reading and on how to develop meaningful independent literacy work. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore The Continuum of Literacy Learning for guided reading, and plan a guided reading introduction based on their understanding of the continuum. Topics may include: Understanding Your Readers Managing Guided Reading Texts and Teaching 10
Teaching Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy Course goal To provide a foundation for beginning reading and writing workshop in the intermediate grades Focus Establishing independent reading, guided reading, and literature discussion Topics may include: The Reading Process: Systems of Strategic Actions Reading Workshop and the Three Block Framework Guided Reading This course provides a foundation for beginning reading and writing workshop in the intermediate grades with a focus on establishing independent reading, guided reading, and literature discussion. An overview of the key principles of reading instruction outlined in Fountas and Pinnell s bestselling Guiding Readers and Writers, this seminar provides teachers with an understanding of all of the elements of an effective literacy program, and the different models for integrating these elements into a predictable and organized routine. Customized to meet your teaching and learning needs, topics within the seminar may include reading and writing workshop, conferences, guided reading in the intermediate grades, reader s notebooks, text analysis, managing the literacy block, and literature discussion groups. In addition, this course provides a hands-on guide for setting up reading workshop in twenty to thirty days. 11
