2 TIER 1 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS What is the Literacy Diet? (Reader s Workshop Basics) Guided Reading Basics K 2 or The Basics of Writing in HCPS This course will provide teachers with a balanced diet of literacy instruction. Teachers will understand basic definitions, time percentages, and how to put these into an effective reading/language arts workshop plan. All levels: Learn how to group students, select texts for reading instruction, and plan an effective guided reading lesson. 3-5: Deepen comprehension through independent followup work. Overview of the writing process, assessment, 6+1 traits terminology and rubrics, and writing instruction. On-going discussion on blackboard Classroom implementation and support from grade level team and school reading specialist Follow up with school 6+1 Traits trainer Organizing for Writer s Workshop K 2 or When, how and why to teach using Writer s Workshop: scheduling, basic components including mini-lessons, writing time, conferencing, and sharing, and incorporating 6+1 traits instruction Follow up with school 6+1 Traits trainer Moving Beyond the 5 Ws of Comprehension Vocabulary 101 K 5 K 2 or 3 5 Build the foundation for reading comprehension with an emphasis on text comprehension from the beginning, rather than waiting until students have mastered the basics of reading. Share sessions with grade level colleagues to discuss lessons and strategies that work

3 H Vocabulary 102 K 2 or Read Alouds that Promote Thinking What is a Fluent Reader? The Basics of Word Study How to Assess a s Reading K 2 or Hanover County Public Schools Professional Development Experiences for All s Experiences for All s This workshop will help you dig deeper into vocabulary instruction and help all learners become independent in their vocabulary practice. Come prepared to make vocabulary centers to use in your classroom! Learn how engaging and dramatic read-alouds in the library or classroom can also provide an opportunity to model comprehension strategies. Teachers will learn think-aloud protocols and create their own instructional read-aloud lessons. This course will define fluent reading behaviors. Teachers will learn how to take an effective running record to determine student s fluency and how fluency fits into the Literacy Diet. Teachers will learn the basics of word study instruction, including the orthographic levels, assessment, and flexible grouping for instruction. Teachers will also discuss the application of word study to reading and writing. Ever have any questions about how to give an assessment? This class will discuss basic reading assessments (formal and informal) given in HCPS. Strategies for successful assessment management will be included. Share lesson plans/protocols with other participants and on Blackboard Assess class using a HCPS assessment Blackboard open discussion on fluency activities used in class Running Record Basics K 3 3 Learn how to take ongoing running records on leveled texts during guided reading. Use them to group and plan for instruction.

TIER 2 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Using Nonfiction During Guided Reading K 2 or Use nonfiction text to integrate content area SOLs during guided reading. Strategies for before, during, and after will be shared. Blackboard postings and discussion Writing in Reading and the Areas When, how and why to incorporate writing into your reading and content area instruction. Follow up with school 6+1 Traits trainer Vocabulary in the Areas Learn how to apply great reading strategies into the content areas. Come prepared to make vocabulary resources to use in YOUR classroom! Comprehension Toolkit: The Super 6 Strategies K 5 Wkshp 1 and Wkshp 2: 3 hours each Teachers will gain an in-depth understanding of each of the six research-based comprehension strategies. You will be able to teach a mini-lesson on each of the strategies after taking this workshop. You will also learn how to reinforce these strategies in your small guided reading groups and in the content areas. Workshop 2 builds on Workshop 1. Share sessions with grade level colleagues to discuss lessons and strategies that work Discussion board on Blackboard to share Super 6 lesson ideas

K 2 or Interactive and Shared Writing Read Alouds that Promote Thinking K 2 3 K 5 teachers and librarians Building a Fluent Reader 3 Hanover County Public Schools Professional Development All s Effectively manage and introduce word work and writing Workstations. Make and take materials to use right away. Do you need to spice up your vocabulary instruction? Learn brain friendly ways to introduce and reinforce your classroom vocabulary. Help your students learn to self-monitor their understanding of words. When, how and why to incorporate interactive and shared writing into your day. Learn strategies for modeling and for involving students in group writing activities. Learn how engaging and expressive read alouds can also be an opportunity for modeling reading comprehension strategies and analyzing author s craft. This course will focus on using assessment to target and build fluent reading behaviors. Strategies and activities will be discussed that promote fluent reading behaviors. Workshop 2 builds on Workshop 1. Share sessions with grade level colleagues to discuss lessons and strategies that work Follow up with school 6+1 trainer Follow up with building reading specialist and library media specialist Blackboard discussion of anonymous student s fluency Progress and fluency activities Assess class using an HCPS assessment

6 Kick Word Study Up a Notch! Modeling Good Writing Using 6+1 Traits What Do I Do With All This Data? K 2 or K 2, 3 5 or grade level sessions 3 All s All s Delve deeper into the orthographic levels and compare daily instruction versus a weekly contract. Small groups will work together to learn feature specific activities, inclusion of sight words, and management ideas. Discuss the application of word study to reading and writing, when and how to accelerate students, and what to do when they fail to make progress. Using 6+1 traits of writing and anchor papers for scoring and planning lessons through the use of picture books and student samples. You ve assessed. Now what? This course focuses on what to do with assessment data. Topics include interpreting data to guide instruction and help with placement. Participants should already be familiar with using HCPS assessments. Follow up with building reading specialist Follow up with school 6+1 trainer Bring current data for analysis; continue to use data to adjust instruction; follow up with building reading specialist Advanced Running Records K 3 3 Learn how to analyze oral reading errors recorded on a running record. Use analysis to plan strategic instruction that will move students forward. Bring current running records to plan for targeted instruction during guided reading; follow up with building reading specialist Writer s Workshop: Assessing and Planning K 2 or How to assess student writing to determine needs and then incorporate effective conferencing and teaching strategies to improve students as writers. Follow up with school 6+1 trainer

Teachers in group support each other through discussion and critiques TIER 3 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Teachers will focus on word study topics specific to Sharing and support through Blackboard discussion Specialized their teaching assignment: struggling readers; GT; ELL; board SPED/Speech. Information will help teachers target Black Topics in Word students who do not show progress using Word Study. K 5 board Teachers will be asked to participate in a follow-up Study course online discussion.
