2 Are you ready to pretend? Let s go!
3 Close your eyes. Now open them...
4 We are at the Emergency Department!
5 One summer day I was playing in the yard with my cousins. We were barefoot.
6 Suddenly all the fun stopped! I cried out in pain. Ow, ow, ow! My foot, my foot! Something hurt my foot. What do you think it could be? Turn and tell a friend.
7 Did you think a bee sting, a piece of glass, a thorn? Well it was a nail! I was really hurt!
8 My mom and my aunt both agreed. We needed to go to the Emergency Department at the hospital.
9 Sometimes people go to the hospital in an ambulance. I don t need that. My Mom drives me. She carries me to the car.
10 My foot really hurts. I say, Mom, what s going to happen? I am scared. It hurts a lot. Pretend your foot hurts a lot like mine. What would you say? What would your face look like?
11 Mom says, Don t worry baby. The nurses and doctors know just what to do. That is why we are here. You will be okay. I promise. Pretend you are a mom or dad helping your child to be calm and brave. What would you say? What would your voice sound like?
12 First we have to talk to the receptionist. She asks lots of questions and writes down all our answers. What happened? Does it hurt much? Is the nail still in your foot?
13 My mom sits me down in a chair while she gives the receptionist all my information. The receptionist types my name, my birthdate, my address, and my insurance information into the computer. It feels like it takes a long time.
14 Then the receptionist comes over and puts a special bracelet on my wrist. Now I will get to see a doctor.
15 Lots of people work in the Emergency Department. A technician pushes me in a wheelchair to a room, and helps lift me up onto a bed with wheels. He checks my bracelet. What s your name? Check. When is your birthday? Check. He makes sure what I say matches what s on my bracelet. Mom says, They are very careful to keep the patients straight.
16 The next person that comes in looks like a doctor. He has a stethoscope and is wearing scrubs. But he says he is a nurse. He checks my bracelet too. Pretend you are the nurse checking my bracelet. Take turns with a friend. What s your name? Check. When s your birthday? Check.
17 The nurse asks me other questions too. He washes the wound. The nail isn t there. It is still in my backyard in a board. It made a small hole in my foot. The nurse says, The doctor will see you soon.
18 When the doctor comes in she is very nice. She says, You are being very brave. These kinds of things happen to adventurers. We will fix you right up!
19 Before she touched my foot she told me, Take a deep calming breath. I felt a little calmer. Pretend you playing emergency room, and you are a nervous patient. Now take a deep calming breath.
20 She bandages my foot, and then says I need a tetanus shot in case the nail was rusty, so I don t get an infection. Oh no! A shot! Say it with me. Oh no! A shot! I don t like shots at all.
21 The doctor says, I have a trick to help make this easy. Do you want to try it? Look for the monkey on the ceiling! I look up at the ceiling to find the monkey, and she gives me the shot really quickly. I never find a monkey on the ceiling but the shot is over fast! That was a good trick! I wonder if there is a monkey up there...
22 Dr. Jones is very nice. She lets me ride in a wheelchair out to the car. She makes my foot feel much better.
23 My mom says I have to stay off my foot for a few days. I lay on the couch and look at books. Mom says, You need to relax and take time to let your body heal.
24 I have lots of time to think about all the people in the Emergency Department at the hospital. There are lots of different jobs. There are receptionists, nurses, doctors, technicians, and I even saw some cleaners.
25 I wonder what job I will have when I grow up. For now, I ll just pretend to be a nurse. Turn and tell a friend what emergency room worker you would like to pretend to be.
