1 Indianola High School Art Facilities and Programs Welcome to the Indianola High School Art Department. Our facilities were designed to help us provide a well-rounded art education to the beginning art student and specialized instruction to students intending to continue their art studies in college, art school or vocational school. Our art alumni have pursued undergraduate and graduate degrees and careers in painting, ceramics, sculpture, commercial art, and photography.

2 The 2-D Studio (2-dimensional) is where our drawing and painting students work. It has beautiful, natural north light plus excellent overhead lighting with a special lighting track for models and other subject matter. Individual slots or compartments allow for storage of student work and the ample floor space allows for individual arrangement of models and subject matter. We have two exhaust systems for fumes and spraying and a large workshop area with table saws and miter saws for construction of frames and stretcher strips. We have a fine art print collection of over 300 reproductions and approximately 2,500 slides in our slide collection. We have a small art library and we subscribe to variety of art magazines for students use. An overhead garage door enables us to bring in models and subject matter as large as an automobile. Our 2-D studio has an exit which leads to a large patio area with picnic tables for working outdoors. 3 The 3-D Studio houses our sculpture program and is where both wheelthrown and hand-built ceramics are taught. Overhead electrical outlets provide plenty of power for our wheels which include a variety of kick wheels and electric wheels used by our ceramics students. We have a large glaze formulation and mixing area plus a spray booth for spray application of glazes and a slab roller. 4 our electric kilns with an excellent exhaust system. We also have a raku kiln for outdoor firings. Our sculpture students work with a variety of sculptural materials and processes, from modeling and carving to welding and assemblages. The Graphics Studio is where our Graphic Design, Digital Imaging, and Photography classes are conducted. This studio also has natural north light. Our state-of-the-art computer lab consists of 20 Power Macs, 4 scanners, a color laser printer and we are linked to the Internet via fiber optic. Our darkroom is equipped with eleven enlarging stations for creative darkroom processes and fine art photography. Using both the darkroom and our computer lab, students are able to do digital darkroom work for journalism and commercial art applications.our Graphic Design and Digital Imaging students use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PageMaker, Web Painter and Microsoft Office for their computer-generated work. Graphic Design students create layouts for brochures while Digital Imaging students design Web pages (below) in the art department computer lab.

5 Our Gallery of Art, located next to the high school theatre, enables us to bring works by professional artists to our school and community. One of the largest high school based galleries in the country, we have had exhibits by artists from around the U.S; Europe and the Middle East. In addition to providing our students with excellent exhibitions of fine art, the gallery allows our art students hands-on experience as gallery assistants. Our new Student Gallery is located outside of the high school art studios. This allows us to display student work throughout the year and provides a place for critiques of student work during class time. The I.H.S. Art Club is an extra-curricular club which is open to all I.H.S. students. You do not have to be enrolled in an art class to be in Art Club. This organization is a social and service organization. We hold a variety of fun functions for our students and also sponsor activities like our Dinner and the Art Center. We perform a variety of service activities for the school and community and sponsor an annual blood drive to encourage students to learn what donating means to others. Through the Art Club s fund-raising efforts, we have raised thousands of dollars to purchase equipment for the high school art department and to provide a yearly scholarship to high school seniors pursuing their art studies at college or technical school. The high school Art Faculty, Bob Kling and Richard Kazmerzak, are both practicing artists who exhibit throughout the United States and teach the areas of their specialties. Mr. Kazmerzak obtained his B.F.A degree from the University of Northern Iowa in art education, specializing in ceramics. He teaches art 1, ceramics, sculpture and photography. Mr. Kling received his B.A. from University of Northern Iowa in art education with an emphasis in both drawing and art history. He obtained his M.A. degree in painting, also from UNI. Mr. Kling teaches art 1, painting, drawing, digital imaging, and graphic design. Our Student Art Assistants help the art faculty in preparations for class work and gain valuable experience in working in an art-related field.

Thursdays are Open Studio in the art department. The studios are open after school until 8:00 p.m. and the Art Club provides free popcorn (above). The Royalty poses at the annual MAD Dance. MAD stands for music, art and drama. 8 Art Courses Art 1 - is a full year, introductory course. A broad variety of media and materials are used to study concepts in drawing, painting, color, pottery, art history and appreciation. Drawing - (sem.) introduces drawing concepts, media, processes and techniques including pencil, ink, charcoal, graphite, wash, pastel and oil pastel with a variety of subjects (Art 1 is a prerequisite.) Advanced Drawing - (sem.) includes advanced concepts and processes to drawing problems to improve both skills and individual creative approaches to student s own work. (Drawing is a prerequisite.) Painting - (sem.) introduces the student to acrylic painting processes and techniques, construction of stretcher strips, stretching canvas, framing and display. (Art 1 is a prerequisite.) Advanced Painting - (sem.) Students will study painting from an historical approach and apply a variety of painting styles and techniques and concepts. (Painting is a prerequisite.) Ceramics - (sem.) introduces the student to both wheel-thrown and hand-built forms, glazing and firing. (Art 1 is a prerequisite.) Advanced Ceramics - (sem.) includes individualized approaches to ceramic problems with student emphasis on their choice of hand-built or wheel-thrown forms, advanced glaze formulation and firing techniques. (Ceramics is a prerequisite.) Sculpture - (sem.) introduces the 3-D concepts and processes of building, modeling, casting and carving using clay and a variety of other media. (Art 1 is a prerequisite.) Advanced Sculpture - (sem.) includes an individualized approach to sculpture with study in student selected media. (Sculpture is a prerequisite.) Graphic Design - (sem.) is an intro to the world of graphic design and commercial art. Students will design layouts, advertisements, magazine covers, logos, brochures, and flyers. Students will be introduced to computer graphics, digital imaging, photo enhancement and computer layouts and will use Adobe PageMaker, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator. (Art 1 is a prerequisite.) Digital Imaging - (sem.) Students will use a variety of digital imaging devises including scanners and digital cameras for importing and exporting graphics. Digital imaging students will use Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Illustrator to create graphics and will learn Web page design and create personal and commercial Web pages. (Graphic Design is a prerequsite.) Photography - (sem., no prerequisite, open to seniors first) is an intro photo course including the study of the pinhole camera, 35mm camera, taking pictures, film development, enlarging, darkroom techniques and display.
