1 FALL 2016 Undergraduate Course Descriptions ENG : Introduction to Narrative Instructor: Robert Langenfeld This course surveys the short story by writers from many countries. The first section of the course focuses on basic elements of narrative: plot, point of view, and characterization. In the second section we look at how the short story has changed from its early beginnings in the nineteenth century to the present. In the final section we study contemporary short stores, many published in the last few years. The course format will include a mixture of lecture, class discussion, group work, movies, audio readings, and use of the course website. Attendance: Don'ʹt worry if on occasion you are late to class. However, do not leave class early. If you have to leave early, then you should not come to class. E- mail friends in your group and find out what you missed. I reserve the right to drop you from the course if you leave early. Texts: All the literature we will be reading will be on our website as PDFs you can access through links on the syllabus. More on this when I introduce the class. ENG : Major British Authors: Romantic to Modern Instructor: Robert Langenfeld English 212 surveys writers in British literature from the Romantic, Victorian, and Modernist eras. Since we have but a few months to cover over two centuries of literature, we must select representative figures from these eras to help us understand key features of literary history since the late 1700s into the early twenty- first century. The course format will include a mixture of lecture, class discussion, group work, movies, audio readings, and use of the course website. Texts: All the literature we will be reading may be found on our course website. More on all of this the first day of class in August. ENG : Journalism 1: Fundamentals of News Writing Instructor: Stan Swofford W 6:00 This is a writing- intensive course with an emphasis on basic news writing, feature writing, interviewing and reporting. Students will learn how to identify, focus and build on the key elements of a newspaper story, using interviewing techniques acquired

2 in class. They will begin by writing one- or two- paragraph briefs and progress to more lengthy stories after mastering techniques of interviewing and reporting. They will write about serious issues and lighthearted slices of life. ENG : Introduction to Fiction Workshop Instructor: Craig Nova English 225 is the introductory fiction writing class. In it, the student will consider the elements of storytelling, such as dramatic structure, language, character, figurative language, and similar matters. The course will also use supplementary, published short stories by writers such as Alice Munro. Each student in the class will produce at least two stories. ENG : American Literature 2 Instructor: Noelle Morrissette This course provides a survey of American literature from 1865 to the present, focusing on the representational strategies employed by authors and ranging across historical periods and literary genres. We will examine how authors contribute to a national literary tradition by reworking ideas of literature and nationhood. Along the way, we will consider questions about the boundaries and various functions of both literature and nation, as well as the ways in which literary texts have addressed (or failed to address) America s critical struggles over the extension of democratic principles across lines of race, class, and gender. Authors include Chesnutt, Twain, Stein, Du Bois, Johnson, Hemingway, Wright, Ellison, and Morrison. ENG : Introduction to Rhetoric Instructor: Shana Scudder In this course, you will learn what rhetoric is, and how to analyze a variety of rhetorical situations and texts using both classical and modern rhetorical concepts, lenses, and terminology. We will start with rhetorical foundations, and from there we will look at how arguments are made through autobiography, visual rhetoric, and performance. You will write three short (3-5 page) papers for each unit, and your final project will be a multi- modal project that synthesizes several concepts from the course.

3 ENG : Introduction to Rhetoric Instructor: Elizabeth Chiseri- Strater This course will focus on civic rhetoric and its responsibilities. The November election will provide fodder for our consideration of political rhetoric. Text: Rhetoric in Civic Life, SECOND EDITION, Palczewski, Ice and Fritch. ENG : Women in Literature- Dangerous Bodies Instructor: Karen Kilcup What makes women, and their bodies, dangerous? How do female and male writers portray women differently? How do readers perceive them differently? Who decides what dangerous means? How do writers treat young women? Older women? Differently abled women? Working women? Sex workers? Lovers, friends, mothers, sisters? In seeking responses to these questions, this course samples a wide range of American women s literary work, including Euramerican, African American, Native American, Asian American, and Mexican American authors. Classes will typically include some lecture but student participation and discussion will direct our focus. Representative writers: Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Wilson, Kate Chopin, Alice Dunbar- Nelson, Zitkala- Ša, Stephen Crane, Maria Cristina Mena, Amy Lowell, Paule Marshall, Edith Wharton, Tillie Olsen, Sylvia Plath, Sandra Cisneros, Alice Walker, Nancy Mairs, Katharine Forrest, Marie Lu, Marilyn Hacker; various magazines (nineteenth- to twenty- first century), websites. ENG : Shakespeare: Early Plays & Sonnets- - Speaking Intensive. Instructor: Christopher Hodgkins We will read and discuss nine plays (The Taming of the Shrew, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, I Henry IV, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Hamlet), beginning with selections from the Sonnets. During the semester you will write three papers a short analysis of a sonnet; a 2- page annotation of published critical articles on a play studied; and a final research essay on a play. There will be regular reading quizzes and two exams the first at midterm and the second (covering the latter half of the course) at the scheduled final examination time. We will emphasize close reading, scene analysis, and oral analysis of particular scenes. Students also will participate in performance groups presenting scenes to the class late in the semester. Texts: Any well- edited, carefully annotated edition of the complete works such as Pelican, Signet, Riverside, or Norton editions, or David Bevington, ed.,

4 The Complete Works of Shakespeare, which I will use in class; MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6 th or 7 th edition. (GLT/English Major: Before 1800) ENG : Topics in Rhet/Comp: Rhetoric and Popular Culture Instructor: Shana Scudder In this class we will be discussing the ways that contemporary rhetorical theory can be applied to popular culture, such as television, film, social media, graphic novels, popular music, and celebrity culture. This course will draw heavily on the theories of Kenneth Burke as well as other contemporary rhetorical theorists. ENG WI: African American Writers after the 1920s Instructor: Noelle Morrissette This upper- level, writing intensive course provides an examination of modern and contemporary African American literature, concentrating on novels, poetry, essays, and drama, and emphasizing gender and sexuality in relationship to race. We ll consider whether there are distinct male and female experiences represented in the literature we read, and consider the development of interdependent and/or distinct black male and female literary traditions over the course of the twentieth (and twenty- first) century; we ll also probe the ways that other categories, especially class and sexuality, intersect with the category of gender, sometimes troubling the very idea that there are actually male and female experiences at all. Visual art and film may accompany the introduction of texts. (Writing Intensive Marker) ENG : Studies in Digital Studio Theory and Practice Instructor: Lindsay Sabatino Studies in Digital Studio Theory and Practice provides students with valuable professional development opportunities. Students will learn how to collaborate, provide and receive constructive feedback, explore principles for digital composition, visual communication and multimodal design. Together, we will discuss what it means to effectively communicate through digital environments. This course provides the opportunity to build better public speaking and conference presentation skills. If hired for the Digital ACT Studio, it is an excellent credential for their résumé. This course is Writing Intensive and Speaking Intensive. This course is by application only.
