1 Save Money by looking into an Auxiliary Meter Auxiliary meters (also called credit or deduct meters) are water meters placed on water lines that are dedicated to fill swimming pools, irrigate the lawn, or for other uses in which the water will not ultimately end up going to the sanitary sewer system.? Since a portion of your sewage bill is based on the main water consumption meter at your home, the installation of an auxiliary meter can save you money in the long run by not having to pay for the water that does not go down the drain. Please give us a call if you are interested in installing an auxiliary meter. The Authority will give you information on the potential money savings, the proper installation of the meters, and the appropriate method for reporting your meter readings.

4 Is an Auxiliary Meter right for me? The decision as to whether or not an auxiliary meter is a good investment requires: 1. A little bit of knowledge as to about how much water you expect to use for your sprinkler system/filling your pool/etc. on an annual basis; 2. A little bit of research into the cost of the meter and the cost of installation; and 3. A little bit of math.
5 Is an Auxiliary Meter right for me? The property owner must figure out how much money the meter will save them over time versus how much it will initially cost for the purchase and installation of the meter. In most cases, savings are not realized in the first year or two after installation. Obviously, the more water used, the quicker the return on the investment. Sprinkler systems tend to be big water consumers and prime candidates for savings via an auxiliary meter.
6 Auxiliary Meter Below is an example showing money savings over time. This is based on THTMA s current charge for the water consumption portion of your sewer bill ($3 per thousand gallons of water used). As noted at the bottom of the page, this is only an estimate the actual cost of meter plus installation and the actual water usage may vary greatly. Cost of auxiliary meter and installation = $175* Yearly pool/sprinkler/etc. water usage = 15,000 gallons** Savings per year = 15 x $3 = $45 Years to make up cost of meter = $175 $45 = 4 years * Meter and installation costs estimated ** Outside water usage estimated
7 Auxiliary Meter Installation There are certain conditions as to how the meter must be installed and how meter readings must be reported. Therefore, please call the Authority for details before installing an auxiliary meter. As always, the Authority recommends getting at least three price quotes for the purchase and installation of an auxiliary meter. Also, as always, please feel free to call the Authority if you have any questions.
