2 Dilemma 1 Cecilie, aged five, and her parents have invited some of the children from your group to a birthday party at the weekend. On the following Monday, some of the girls are chatting about the birthday party and are wearing pretty little bracelets that they got at the party. Caroline wasn t invited. You can see that she s not being allowed to join in with the group that s formed among a number of the girls who went to the party, and she s walking round on her own.

3 Dilemma 2 At a staff meeting, it s agreed that you ll all keep a special eye on a group of boys from the blue room, because they ve upset a girl from the same room a number of times. Your colleague is on playground duty a couple of days later, and you see from the staffroom window that the boys from the blue room are upsetting the girl. Your colleague is watching what s happening from a distance, but she doesn t react. You know your colleague is under pressure from personal problems at the moment and has been on sick leave for a time.

4 Dilemma 3 You re a carer in the green room, where a child has been bullied and not been allowed to join a group of children for quite a long time. His parents are now considering moving their child to another preschool.

5 Dilemma 4 Anton often plays on his own. When you ask him whether he wants to join in and play with the other children, he says he doesn t. The other children don t want to play with him either. Anton becomes sadder and sadder.

6 Dilemma 5 Two boys in your room ask their parents over and over whether they can play together at the weekend. One of the mothers keeps coming up with excuses, but you ve seen her organising play-dates with the parents of other children.

7 Dilemma 6 Three girls from your room often play together. Two of the girls have agreed to play together after lunch. The third girl asks if she can play too but the others say she can t. This upsets her. It s not the first time that this has happened.

8 Dilemma 7 You re holding a parents evening. One set of parents tell you that their daughter has cried and told them that one of the carers at preschool has made fun of her in front of the other children. The carer in question is also present at the parents evening. The carer gets angry, feels she s being accused and denies that anything ever happened. The parents are adamant that their daughter isn t lying.

9 Dilemma 8 In the staffroom, you overhear a discussion between carers from another room. They re talking about a boy in their room, referring to him as the troublemaker of the group and the cause of social problems in the group. You feel they re making a scapegoat of this child, and you often hear this kind of discussion in the staffroom.

11 HOW TO USE THE DILEMMA CARDS Purpose: The dilemma cards are designed to inspire you as a team to discuss various situations in your everyday life at preschool. They focus on your handling of bullying or situations which could develop into bullying. Method: Talking about dilemmas in your everyday life at preschool makes other people aware of the challenges you face and your attitudes and needs, and it gives you the opportunity to debate how you could deal with such situations in future. This allows the method to extend and challenge the way you have been doing things to date. The intention is not to achieve agreement on a single solution to the dilemmas, but to come up with a range of possible actions that could help to make life at preschool better for children who are having problems. A good supplement: The dilemma cards are just one element of many in the Free of Bullying suitcase. Use these cards as a supplement to your preschool s other initiatives to combat bullying and promote wellbeing. Use the eight different dilemma cards in the suitcase and by all means extend the method by coming up with a few relevant dilemmas of your own. These could be situations which you encounter which involve children, parents or colleagues. Time required: Split up into small groups and spend about six minutes on each dilemma card. If necessary, spend 15 minutes with the entire staff team at the end and share your suggestions.

12 Dilemma cards the rules 1. Divide the participants into groups of 3-4 people. 2. Give each group a set of dilemma cards. Shuffle the dilemma cards and place them on the table, face down. The members of the group take it in turns to take a dilemma card. B Be e d e n d re rveenvneen r 3. One person takes a card. Give that person a few moments to think about the question, then ask them to say how they would immediately deal with the dilemma. r 4. The card is then passed on to the next person, who gives their opinion. Repeat this until everyone has had their say. 5. Once the card has been passed round to everyone, you can then open the floor to questions and discussion. It is important to maintain a constructive and respectful tone for the discussion, and to allow everyone to have their say.
