Page 1 of 11 Grade 2 Week 29 The following are a list of characters from Ancient Greek Mythology, including Gods, Goddesses, and magical creatures! Read about each one, and then draw your own portrait of them. Find more background at: Zeus The most powerful Greek God was Zeus. He was the king of the gods, fierce, feared, all powerful and very strong. According to ancient myths he was one of the sons of the god Kronos. The stories say that Zeus and his brothers Poseidon and Hades killed their father and split his kingdom. Zeus took the land, Poseidon the sea and Hades the underworld. Nobody dared to upset Zeus, he had been known to hurl thunderbolts in a bad mood. Zeus lived on Mount Olympus, his wife was Hera and he was father to Apollo, Dionysus and Athene.
Page 2 of 11 Hera One of Zeus' wives was Hera, her symbol was a peacock. Hera was the protector of women and marriage.
Page 3 of 11 Apollo Apollo was twin brother to Artemis and Zeus' son. He was the god of sun, light, music and truth. He also controlled science, healing and poetry. His was the oracle at Delphi, he claimed it after killing a python which was sheltering there.
Page 4 of 11 Artemis Artemis was the moon goddess. She protected children and pregnant women.
Page 5 of 11 Aphrodite The Goddess of Love
Page 6 of 11 Eros Eros was the Greek god of love. He was the son of Aphropdite. He was able to persuade people to fall in love by shooting them with his golden arrows.
Page 7 of 11 Atlas Atlas was considered a leader, and was so in the battle between the Titans and the Olympians. The Titans were defeated in this war and were placed in Tartarus as punishment. However, Atlas wasn't granted this punishment and was instead forced to carry the entire weight of the sky on his shoulders. Atlas was relieved of his duty once by Hercule's, but was later tricked into resuming his burden.
Page 8 of 11 Centaur A centaur was a beast half horse, and with the head, torso and arms of a man.
Page 9 of 11 Cerberus Cerberus was a huge and savage dog with three heads which guarded the entrance to Hades. He was the offspring of Echidne and Typhon.
Page 10 of 11 Pan Pan was the god of herds, flocks, fertility, forests, and wildlife. He is known to be a formidable musician, and even challenged the god Apollo to a contest. Pan's instrument of choice was known as the Syrinx. This was a flute that consisted of seven descending sized reeds placed size by side.
Page 11 of 11 Pegasus Pegasus was the winged horse of Bellerophon and Perseus. After the horse helped Bellerophon defeat the Chimaera, he then tried to ride the horse up into the tops of Mount Olympus. Zeus did not agree to this and sent a thunderbolt down to stun the horse into throwing the hero off. Pegasus was allowed to fly the rest of the way to the top of Mount Olympus.
