Class Notes/Learning Log/Textbook Notes explaining Main Ideas, Questions, and characters in or about the book. Topic: Homer s Odyssey, Book IX: New Coasts and Poseidon s Son PolyPhemus pp Abbrev. Do not grow food No community Ll65-67 The Cyclops; Poseidon s son Cyclopes is plural for Cyclops giants, louts, without a law to bless them. C = Cyclops=Polyphemus=P O= Odysseus they neither plow, nor sow by hand nor till the ground, though grain--- but each one dwells in his own mountain cave Dealing out rough justice to wife and child, Indifferent to what others do Ll80- O takes some of his men to check out the Cs cave and find out what time of man he was. Cs description Ll87-92 A prodigious man Slept in this cave alone, and took his flocks To graze afield remote from all companions, Knowing none but savage ways, a brute So huge, he seemed no man at all of those Who eat good wheaten bread; but he seemed rather A shaggy mountain reared in solitude. Ll95- Why did O. bring food and wine when in search of the C.. O. took : his 12 best fighters, a goatskin full of brandy/wine that he got from Maron which was very concentrated. It was usually mixed one part wine and twenty parts water. O. also brought food.

Tragic Flaw emerges Ll Cyclops is not in cave when they arrive Men want to take cheeses and animals, but Odysseus wants to meet Cyclops. He goes against better judgement of his men and they stay. While telling the story Odysseus admits his mistake. Summary, Analysis, Reflection O takes men to the cave of the C against the wishes of his men. C is one of many, but they are loners and don t treat their wives and children well. As big as mountains and without civility. explaining Main Ideas, Questions, and characters in or about the book. Topic: Homer s Odyssey, Book IX: Poseidon s Son pp Ll155 O. and his men burn an offering to Gods and wait. C returns and after he is in with his flock, pulls a boulder in front of door. C sees O and his men. Asks if they are There to trade legitimately or pirates.

Ll163-9 Allusion O. responds that they are tied to Agamemnon thru the Trojan war because this Allusion shows how powerful, and brave O is. A don t mess with me warning. O. reminds the C that Zues will punish anyone who harms a guest. L210 C doesn t care and isn t afraid of Zeus. Eats two of O s men. He goes to sleep. O and his men are trapped because they cannot move the ponderous slab boulder. C wakes up, lights a fire, and then leaves, keeping O and men trapped in cave. L O and his men make a spear out of an olive tree in the cave. They scrape it and O fleshes out the plan to blind the C C returns with all of his flock including the rams L252 He eats two more men O offers him some wine, undiluted and he drinks three bowls C. becomes fuddled and flushed confused and red faced due to intoxication. C. asks O. what his name is Topic: O. shows Homer s his wit Odyssey, Book IX: O. replies New Coasts nohbody and Poseidon s Son

Class Notes/Learning Log/Textbook Notes explaining Main Ideas, Questions, and characters in or about the book. C, drunk and stumbling dribbles out streams of liquor and men as he passes out. Epic simile ll Cs blood in eye is hisses around the spear like the water that a blacksmith uses to cool the axehead he has heated in the fire. Allusion to Poseidon O and four men drive charred hot spear into his eye and blind him. In a Smithy One sees a white hot axehead or an adze Plunged and wrung in a cold tub, screeching steam The way they make soft iron hale and hard Just so that eyeball hissed around that spike. C wakes up and screams Other C come running and C says Nohbdy, Nohbdy s tricked me, Nohbdy s ruined me. Other Cs tell him to pray to his father and let them sleep. We learn he is Polyphemus father through this allusion. Then they leave C removes boulder and goes to squat on the beach

Epic hero trait of craftiness O comes up with plan to use sheep/tie them together and hide men underneath to escape. P. pets each sheep and even the ram that O is hiding under and doesn t suspect a thing. All of them escape. Ll Ll Tragic flaw: pride O taunts P after he is safely on his ship. His men caution him, but he does it anyway. C throws a hilltop at them causing a huge wave. O names himself an uses the epithets raider of cities and Son of Laertes He wants the C and everyone to know who outwitted and blinded the C. continues to taunt the C. Summary, Analysis, Reflection P prays to Poseidon to make O s journey more difficult and longer and that all his men should die. And that when he returns, his return will be full of bitter days. Odysseus shows himself to be a great leader of his men, but he also shows his own hubris (pride). This ends in the death of some of his men. And will make his journey longer and more difficult.
