Transition from Children s to Adult Hearing Services Information for patients, relatives and carers For more information, please contact: Audiology Department Tel: hearingaidrepairs@york.nhs.uk The York Hospital, Wigginton Road, York, YO31 8HE
Contents Page What is different about the hearing aid service you receive as a child and as an adult? 3 Teachers of the Deaf (TOD) 4 Services Beyond School 5 2
What is different about the hearing aid service you receive as a child and as an adult? When you were younger your parents/guardians made choices about your hearing needs. As an adult, we will no longer involve your parents/guardians. All of the choices made about your hearing tests and hearing aids will be made between you and an Audiologist. In the adult service you will still be seen in the same department but we will not send for you. Instead, you will need to contact us directly on or hearingaidrepairs@york.nhs.uk for help with your aids or if you need a hearing test. Once in the adult service you will be routinely offered a 15 minute repair appointment to assess the concern that you have. If the Audiologist needs more time they will arrange to bring you back for a longer appointment. Unless you have a specific condition that means you re hearing will change more rapidly that the general population, we will not carry out a hearing test within three years of any previous test, unless of course you feel something has changed. If your last hearing test was three years or over when you get in touch with us we ll automatically offer you a 45 minute hearing aid review appointment. 3
To be eligible to enter the adult service you will need to be over 18 years old and not be in full time education. If you are in full time education and you are between years old you can opt to stay in the paediatric service. If you stay in the paediatric service you will be offered annual reviews but we will no longer send your parents/guardians updates by letter. Teachers of the Deaf (TOD) TOD services have different provision criteria. Please ask them directly to find out how they will support you in further education. City of York: Specialist teaching Team, Deaf and Hearing Support: team/358/hearing_difficulties North Yorkshire: Sensory, Physical and Medical Support: 4
Services Beyond School There are several services available to help you in day-to-day life, in further education or in the work place. You will need to consult the relevant person at work or your Further Education provider for more information. Citizen s Advice Bureau Disabled Students Allowance This is a service provided by the UK government that assesses your individual educational needs. They then provide a report used by colleges and universities to provide resources that you can use to help you in your studies. Access to Work: Access to Work can help you if your health or disability affects the way you do your job. It gives you and your employer advice and support with extra costs which may arise because of your needs. 5
National Deaf Children s Society: This charity will support you for as long as you are at home with your parents/guardians. Once you are living independently, their support stops. See their website for more information. Health & Social Care You are entitled to have your social care needs assessed by Health and Social Care Services. You can self-refer. City of York: North Yorkshire: 6
