2 The City of London The City of London Corporation supports and promotes the City as the world leader in international finance and business services. The City of London supports the City business community, helping to develop business opportunities and establish relationships with decision makers and influential key contacts worldwide. The roles of the City of London s two leading Members the Lord Mayor and the Policy Chairman are focused on supporting and promoting UK-based financial services. The City of London works on behalf of financial and professional services across London and the UK. The City of London s political and governance structures are not based on party politics, and work on behalf of the UK-based financial services industry is financed by the City of London s private funds. The City of London acts as an honest broker working with both business and government. It works with both London and national government bodies and engages in dialogue with the European Union. Internationally, the City of London works to promote and support the City as a brand for UK-based financial services overseas, strengthening the UK s international trade and investment ties and building links with foreign governments and the private sector. o The City of London engages regularly with the UK government and parliament to maintain awareness among national policy makers of the importance of financial services to the UK economy, and the need to safeguard an environment which attracts talented individuals and allows innovation. The City of London provides an effective, commercially neutral forum for pan-industry activity and representation to government on issues including tax, regulation and immigration. o As much of the legislation with an impact on the financial services sector originates from the European Union, the City of London maintains an ongoing and active programme of engagement with EU institutions. o The Lord Mayor s international business role entails an intensive programme of visits to overseas markets, accompanied by business delegations. During these visits, he promotes the services of the City through a programme of speeches, meetings and the forging of links between UK business representatives and their overseas counterparts.

3 o The City of London regularly hosts visiting delegations of practitioners and government officials from around the world. This work provides opportunities for City practitioners to access senior visitors through roundtable discussions, networking events and one-to-one-meetings. o The City offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Mumbai run a high level programme of seminars, roundtables and networking events which provide a sustained level of engagement between financial services practitioners, regulators and government officials from these countries and the UK. o The City of London hosts, organises and arranges major receptions and banquets for Heads of State, politicians, the diplomatic community, business leaders and others thereby providing the opportunity for making contacts and discussion of issues of interest to the financial services sector. o The City of London commissions research tailored to the international interests of financial services firms, think pieces on topics of current interest authored by experts in the fields in question, and a number of economic research periodicals. o The City of London helps foreign financial and professional services firms to establish a presence in London and to grow their existing operations in the UK. This is done through the provision of advice and assistance, identifying office space, providing contacts and connections and supplying research and information. o The City of London also maintains regular engagement with other major international financial centres, with a particular focus on New York and the policy making centre of Washington. Senior City of London figures also regularly visit Hong Kong and Singapore, key European financial centres such as Frankfurt and Paris, and well as emerging markets such as China and India.

4 The City of London s India programme In order to strengthen direct links with India, one of the world s largest and most vibrant emerging markets, the City of London runs an India programme. The City of London funds and manages the City of London India Representative Office to promote the interests of UK-based financial services in India. The office works to further strengthen trading and investment links in both directions between India and the UK through the provision of world class financial services and products. The City of London Advisory Council for India was established in 2007 to guide the City of London s engagement with India and the work of the City Office in Mumbai. The Advisory Council meets biannually in Mumbai and in London to review progress in financial services reform in India and the work of the India Representative Office, discuss work on the City s priority areas over the preceding six months and establish new areas of focus. The current areas of focus are: o the development of the Indian corporate debt market; o infrastructure financing; o financial sector skills; and o insurance investment. 5 What the India programme offers The City Office in Mumbai engages with decision makers in the financial services sector in the focus areas set by the Advisory Council for India, and supports UK-based financial services companies to do business in India. The City of London: o organises bimonthly financial services roundtables in Mumbai bringing together regulators, officials and corporate leaders on subjects that are of mutual interest to the UK and Indian financial services sector; o regularly produces position papers and commissions primary research on financial sector issues; o publishes a weekly Indian financial services news update and bimonthly India newsletter; o provides key contacts and introductions for UK and Indian financial and professional services firms; o provides desk research and India market related information to UK firms; o arranges meetings and business programmes for financial policy study tours to London by Indian government officials and practitioners; and o assists Indian financial services firms to set up operations in the UK. 6 The City of London s China programme In order to strengthen direct links with China, one of the world s largest and most vibrant emerging markets, the City of London runs a China programme. The City of London funds and manages offices in Beijing and Shanghai to promote the interests of UK-based financial services in China. The offices work to further strengthen trading and investment links in both directions between China and the UK through the provision of world class financial services and products. The City of London Advisory Council for China was launched in 2010 to guide the City of London s engagement with China and the work of the offices in Beijing and Shanghai. The Advisory Council meets biannually in China and in London to review progress in financial services reform, discuss work on the City s priority areas over the preceding six months and establish new areas of focus. The current areas of focus are: o the internationalisation of the renminbi and London as a centre for renminbi business; o M&A and Chinese firms locating in the UK; o insurance and risk management; and o maritime services.
