1 Coffee Shop Confrontation Facilitator Guide A Scenario for Building Leaders Brought to You By: This message funded by America's Pork Checkoff program.

2 Workshop Objectives As a result of this session, producers will: Discuss different approaches to handling a realistic situation in which they must communicate effectively about decisions made by industry leaders. Create an action plan for improving one or two of the following skills: Managing Conflict/Negotiation Building Relationships Risk Taking Session Overview 1. Introduce and Preview the Scenario 1 min 2. Complete the Scenario 10 min 3. Discuss the Scenario as a Group 15 min 4. 3 Introduction and Preview 1 minute Step 1: Introduce the scenario. Industry leaders make many decisions that can affect producers at national, state and local levels. Not every decision is unanimous, nor is every producer satisfied after decisions have been made. As a representative of the pork industry, it is critical that you carefully consider the needs of all producers as you serve on the decision-making boards and committees. You should be prepared to work towards consensus and speak to the decisions made. Sometimes this is easier said than done. The scenario we ll experience next is entitled Coffee Shop Confrontation. It will give you a chance to decide how you might respond to your peers after making a difficult decision for the industry. It s designed to help you begin thinking about some of the skills that can help you effectively make decisions and serve as a leader in the industry. As you watch and make decisions, think about how you would react if you were in this situation. Put yourself in the central character s shoes you may be standing there very soon! Step 2: Pass out one copy of the participant guide to each audience member. These are copies of a participant guide. Grab one of these and place it face up in front of you. You ll also want to have something to write with nearby. For now, leave the guide closed in front of you; we will use it in a minute. This message funded by America's Pork Checkoff program. 3

4 Complete the Scenario 10 minutes Step 1: Click Begin on the module title page. Step 2: Prompt participants to make a choice and read feedback in the participant guide. When the first decision comes up prompt participants to locate the options for Decision One on page 2 of the participant guide. Have participants select one of the options and then look to page 3, 4 or 5 to find some feedback regarding the decision they have selected. Provide them 2-3 minutes to review the feedback and complete the reflection statements provided. Step 3: Have participants work with a partner to discuss their decision. Excellent. Turn to the person sitting next to you and discuss the decision you made and how you answered the two reflection statements. Allow time for sharing. Optional: Survey participants on the choices they made and record the numbers. Identify how many participants chose each option. Remind the participants that there is NO right answer. Make a list showing the options (Option A, Option B and Option C) and record the number of participants who chose each option on a flip-chart and/or whiteboard. You will use this information during the group discussion. Step 5: Choose one of the options, and then click Return to Coffee Shop. Step 6: Prompt participants to make a choice and read feedback in the participant guide. When the second decision comes up prompt participants to locate the options for Decision Two on page 6 of the participant guide. Have participants select one of the options and then look to page 7, 8 or 9 to find some feedback regarding the decision selected. Provide them 2-3 minutes to review the feedback and complete the reflection statements provided. Step 7: Have participants work with a partner to discuss their decision. Excellent. Turn to the other person sitting next to you and discuss your decision. Be sure to share how you answered the two reflection statements. Allow time for sharing. 5 Optional: Survey participants on the choices they made and record the numbers. Identify how many participants chose each option. Remind the participants that there is NO right answer. Make a list showing the options (Option A, Option B and Option C) and record the number of participants who chose each option on a flip-chart and/or whiteboard. You will use this information during the group discussion. Step 9: Choose one of the options, and then click Return to Coffee Shop. Step 10: Prompt participants to select and complete the Skills Survey or the Kaizen Questions. On the Time to Reflect page have the participants select either the Skills Survey or the Kaizen Questions. If they selected the Skills Survey, they should proceed to page 10 in the participant guide. If they selected Kaizen Questions, they should proceed to page 11 in the participant guide. Ask participants to wait until after the group discussion to complete the Action Plan Worksheet on page 12. Allow them 5-7 minutes to complete the survey and/or questions. This message funded by America's Pork Checkoff program. 5

6 Discuss the Scenario as a Group 15 minutes Step 1: Ask the group the following questions to stimulate discussion. What was most challenging about the two decisions you faced in the module? What were some of the areas of improvement you identified for yourself as a result of this experience? What is one insight about serving as a leader in the organization that you will take away from this experience? Step 2: Summarize the discussion. Highlight the skills addressed in this module: Managing Conflict/Negotiation Building Relationships Risk Taking Encourage participants to begin working on their action plans to build these critical skills for a coffee shop confrontation. Review and Complete an Action Plan 4 minutes Step 1: Review the session. As a leader in the pork industry, there will be times when you will help make decisions on behalf of other producers. Some decisions may be very simple; others may be more controversial. Building relationships with fellow producers will go a long way toward increasing your awareness of their needs and desires. Additionally, solid relationships can provide you with the credibility you need in the face of disagreement. Be prepared to know the issues, negotiate and take the risks needed to ensure the best possible future for the industry as a whole. Consider how you will react when asked about the decisions you did or did not support. Step 2: Prompt participants to complete the action plan. Ask participants to turn to page 12 in the participant guide. Once there, participants should complete the action plan worksheet provided. This sheet will help them identify goals for building some of the skills necessary to serve as an effective industry leader. This message funded by America's Pork Checkoff program. 6
