3 Taste Buds Notes SCREEN 1 A healthy balanced diet can affect how we look and feel and improve performance. This is an animation featuring Flick, one of the Taste Buds characters. It shows her practising for and taking part in a dancethon competition. We see how the poor balance of her diet affects her performance. The cartoon begins by showing Flick struggling to get her dance routine right. Her friends investigate and discover her lunch box contains mostly sweets and treats. They decide to secretly help Flick s Mum do the shopping and improve the balance of her diet. Play the animation for the children and afterwards discuss what they have seen and learned. SCREEN 2 A healthy balanced diet can affect how we look and feel and improve performance. This screen explains the Trolley Stuffers game. The aim of this game is to try to get a balance in Flick s diet by adding and removing items from her Mum s shopping trolley. Introduce the game to the children by explaining the purpose of the Trolley Stuffers game.

4 Taste Buds Notes SCREEN 3 Different quantities of foods from the different food groups are required to achieve a balanced diet. A healthy balanced diet can affect how we look and feel and improve performance. You must help improve Flick s diet by adding or removing items from her Mum s shopping trolley to get a balance of foods. The Taste Buds have decided to help balance Flick s diet by changing the items that her mother buys. You can control what items go into the trolley and also remove some items to try and get a balance. You can see how you are doing by looking at the chart (balance-meter) in the top right hand corner of the screen. You can use the Z and X keys to move the trolley to control what food goes into it. If there s something in the trolley that s messing up the balance, you can take it out with the hook. Use the arrow keys to move the hook, and to make it drop. The hook will automatically go up once it grabs something. But watch out - if the food reaches the top of the trolley, Flick s mum will automatically head to the Checkout. The balance of goods in the trolley when Flick s mum checks out is shown on the balance-meter. We see how Flick does in the based on the balance of foods that the class has selected for her. Invite the class to get involved by asking them to play the Trolley Stuffers game. Read the instructions first to learn how to play the game.

Flick s performance depends on the balance of foods in the Trolley Stuffers game that has just been played. Play the animation and afterwards discuss what the children have seen and learned. You can play the Trolley Stuffers game again and change the balance of foods in the trolley for a different outcome. SCREEN 5 Different quantities of foods from the different food groups are required to achieve a balanced diet. A healthy balanced diet can affect how we look and feel and improve performance. The screen displays some information on the benefits of having a balanced diet and aims to reinforce the messages from the animations already watched. Talk through these points with the class and ask them if they can think of any other reasons why having a balanced diet is important. Ask the children to try to remember the Food Pyramid and food groups and what they have learned about them.

A healthy balanced diet can affect how we look and feel and improve performance. This is an Extension Activity. This interactive screen allows suggestions from the class to be typed in on-screen. This slide contains four scenes based on Flick s audition. Each scene can be accessed by clicking the Next button. Each shows the characters talking, but with the text removed from their speech bubbles. The class must suggest what the characters might be saying based on what is happening on-screen. activity 2 print and create your own food pyramid Understanding the Food Pyramid and the six food groups. This is the title screen for a print and colour activity. Pressing the Print button, prints out a black and white image of Flick with her trophy alongside a blank copy of the Food Pyramid. The children can use this blank Food Pyramid to draw and colour in the foods from the six food groups, on the correct shelves. Ask the class to get involved by making suggestions about the advice the Taste Buds would give to Flick. HOMEWORK ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS 1: If the children have access to the internet at home, ask them to complete the food diary along with their parent/guardian.
