2 What is lavandin? Everybody knows what lavender is. Or do they? Most people confuse lavender for its close cousin lavandin as it is more commonly used by the cosmetics industry. A hybrid plant, lavandin was born centuries ago from the natural cross-pollination of fine lavender (L. angustifolia) and spike lavender (L. latifolia). Despite a different color lavandin is bluer both varieties look pretty similar. Yet their properties are fairly different. Lavender is a natural scent enhancer. Many great fragrances are brightened up with lavender notes as it enables them to last longer without overpowering their dominant notes. Indeed, lavender is so light it naturally fades behind other scents. On the other hand, lavandin inherited a camphor scent from its other cousin, a scent so strong it would overpower any note if used for a fragrance. But it can be put at use in many different ways.

3 To avoid counterfeit or feeble oils, great perfumers know to source lavender oil in Provence. With its gentle climate and its dry alkaline limestone soil, the French region offers the best environment for lavender growing. The plants are given the perfect amount of water and bathe continuously in sunlight. As a result, they develop a very strong scent that produces highly powerful essential oils. To highlight this particularity, France created in 1981 an Origin Certification label (called AOP, similar as the wine industry s certification system). Granted only to companies producing lavender in the very region of Provence and according to methods guaranteeing the purest production, it enables consumers to source only the best oils in the market. 4 As any other essential oil, both lavender and lavandin oils can be used for therapeutic and aromatic purposes. - Expectorant. Used as an expectorant in vapor inhalations to relieve cold and flu symptoms, it soothes the lungs, cleanses the throat and reduces coughing. - Skin Healing. Lavandin oil can be used to help heal little cuts and wounds, pimples and small burns. It is also used to heal skin cracks between toes. And since it s alcohol-free, it doesn t sting. - Aromatic uses : Packed in small, easy-to-carry bottles, the powerful scent of an oil can be put to good use in many occasions: a few drops on the floor cleaning water, in the toilet bowl, or on the vacuum filter will release a fresh and floral smell in the house. Diluted and vaporized in closets, on pot-pourris and curtains, oils can replace chemical deodorants to purify the air. Lastly, a few drops in a burner or a perfume vaporizer can naturally eliminate tobacco, cooking or stale smells. Putting Essential Oils at Use

5 Both oils are widely used in cosmetics, perfumery and homeopathy. Yet, lavender and lavandin oils show very different characteristics and benefits. Camphor gives to lavandin mostly calming and relieving qualities, when lavender is mainly used for its invigorating properties. Lavandin - Pain relief. A natural antiseptic and analgesic, lavandin oil can be used to relieve the burn and itch from a mosquito bite, muscle stiffness, aches and pains. It is also used to relieve joint pain and rheumatisms. - Insect repellant : lavandin oil is a strong lice and moth repellant. A few drops on the hair or in the closets are enough to create an insect-free zone. - Relaxation : Mixed with almond oil or Vaseline, it can be the base of a relaxing massage. Adding a spoon of milk and a few drops of the oil to bath water creates the same relief as a soothing massage. - Sedation : a few drops on a bed sheet or a pillow are enough to help ease sleep troubles. Lavender - Invigoration: mixed with almond oil or petroleum jelly, lavender oil can be the base of an invigorating massage. - Stress relief: a natural antidepressant, lavender can show surprising qualities: inhaling briefly the air coming out of an open bottle in a deep breath helps calming down. 6 Specifications Pierre-Jean Mateudi offers 4 different types of lavender and lavandin essential oils, including 3 organic oils, all certified by Ecocert. The oils are conditioned in different types of bottles: - small 10ml and 5ml bottles with a drop-by-drop opening, to use infinitesimal amounts of the product, or simply inhale it. - bigger 50ml and 100ml spray bottles for aromatic uses. Bottles are made either of blue or brown tainted glass, to shield the oils from any UV damage. Caps are made of plastic for the 5 and 10 ml bottles. They are made of aluminum for the spray bottles.
