3 Alameda Vipers AAU Basketball About The Program Alameda Vipers are a registered 501(3)(c) Non-Profit, competitive youth basketball program that focuses on coaching and teaching advanced skills, sportsmanship, through hard work and the a love of the game of basketball. The instruction regimen includes practice sessions, scrimmages, and tournament games. Alameda Vipers are based in Alameda County, CA Club website: The Alameda Vipers Club is affiliated with the National Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and fields girls and boys teams in grades 3 to 12. The Vipers operate year-round and separates the 12-month calendar into 3 seasons Winter/Spring (Jan-May), Summer (June-Aug) and Fall (Sept-Dec). AAU Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest sports organizations in the United States. The difference between AAU basketball and other basketball leagues is based on the use of full high school rules. No developmental limitations are placed on the game such as participation and no-press/fast-break rules. This promotes competitive play and the broadest exposure to fundamentals and advanced techniques of the game. Team As Community The team is built around a community concept. All board members, coaches and those who help the team are volunteers. Parents are asked to be active participants in non-coaching team activities. For instance, we do our best to setup car pool schedules that help share the burden of transporting player, parents and fans to-and-from games and practices. Participation of parents is a requirement of team membership. Parents are expected to focus on the primary part of our agenda that supports our coaches as they teach basketball in a team environment, and de-emphasize the importance of just winning. Education and skills development are our primary goal. Financial and Participatory Commitment Parents are responsible for covering the cost of their child s participation in the program. We welcome any assistance in obtaining sponsors for the teams and the club to help subsidize any operational or tournament costs. Each team has an Account against which membership dues will be applied. These funds provide for: AAU Annual Club Membership Fees Team liability insurance ($1 million liability) Equipment Tournament / League Entry fees Other expenses required to run the team Practice Facility Rental We are not a recreational team. We strive to have a team for each grade level and some grades may contain a Select and/or Competitive Team. Select Team consists of the most competitive players for their age group, who will play a Division 1 AAU schedule. This team will play the most tournaments, including several travel tournaments. This team is for our most committed players and families. For our teams, the club management as well as the team coaches will determination whether or not a team is Select based on the roster collective talent and level of commitment. Competitive Team is for experienced and enthusiastic players, including players who have advanced beyond their recreational/school teams, and want to begin playing more competitively and/or may have multiple sports in the same season. They will play a local Division 2 or 3 AAU schedule. Practices and Training All teams will practice approximately 3 hours per week. Select teams will also have a Training Day in addition to the regular practices will be added after the team is established. Practice times are scheduled based upon availability of gyms, coaches and trainers. Proper club attire at practices and games is required as determined by the coach. Playing time is determined by the coach to meet the competitive needs of the team and the games. Playing times are not equal and there are games where all players may not get in the game. It is the coach's decision to put the best players in the game as the situation demands. To remain competitive, players must meet the expectation of the coaches related to individual skills, mental preparedness, coach-ability (attitude, effort, ability to learn), and physical conditioning for the rigor of AAU games and practices. Players and parents must respect the coach and the coach s decision and responsibility to the overall team and club. A commitment to discipline in basketball training and conditioning during practice and outside of practice is required as well as reaching and maintaining the physical and mental conditioning and preparedness, and a commitment to team basketball. Head coaches have the right to add and remove players based the best outcome for the team. Alameda Vipers Membership Application Page 3
4 Fees The Alameda Vipers is a registered non-profit organization. We keep the fees for players very low. We have modest uniforms and focus on teaching the game of team basketball. Basketballs are provided. Each season the players fees are based on factors including gym rentals, insurance, game and tournament costs. After the team is formed the Coach will provide the total fee amount to the parents. Checks for fees are made payable to: Alameda Vipers. Games & Tournaments Players are expected to commit to attending practices and games over the course of the season. Fees are based on the number of games that the team s Head Coach wants for that season (minimum 15 games), and gym rentals fees, first aid, supplies and club insurance. Most games and tournaments will be local (within the bay area) and some may occasionally be out-of-area (Sacramento, Reno, LA, etc.) and may require an overnight stay. The Head Coach and Team Parent will select the appropriate number and location of tournaments. Once the game schedule is finalized, it is expected that players will attend all games and be ready to play. Tournaments are on weekends. Schedules for the tournament are commonly released on Thursday before the weekend games Traveling & Game Expenses: All costs associated with travel to tournaments such as uniforms, transportation, parents and fan admission to games, food and hotel stay are the players family s responsibilities and are not included in the seasonal fees. Background checks are required of all Coaches and Assistant Coaches. The National AAU conducts criminal background checks on every non-athlete member (Coaches, Managers, etc), and will not issue an AAU Membership card and can t coach until the background check is "clear".
