1 ANTI- BULLYING SAFETY PLAN PROGRAM (SPP) AT ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC SCHOOL/BLUFFTON/SC PRESENTED BY: COURTNEY SMITH SGG

2 What We Did We surveyed our student body (225-- PK thru 8 th grade students) to find out what the believe is a bully and what they can do when they see someone being bullied.

3 What We Did Cont. We also had certain grade levels draw pictures of what it feels like to be safe at school.

4 Results Here are the results (by grade level) to the question---a bully is someone who: The most common results are listed

5 Grades PK and K: Is not nice and mean---these two grade levels spoke volumes through their drawings of a safe school environment- --which will be discussed later in this presentation.

6 Grades 1 and 2: Can hurt your feelings Keeps making the same bad choices Is mean Doesn t know the kindness of Mary and Jesus Is selfish Doesn t stop when you say Stop Doesn t follow directions Acts like a boss Is someone who got bullied before Doesn t let you play with them

7 Grades 3 and 4: Calls you names Might hurt someone physically, mentally and spiritually Talks about other people Hurts someone s feelings Brags about themselves Leaves others out/excludes them from a game Hurts/threatens weaker people Is actually scared but acts tough

8 Grades 5 and 6: Jealous of other people Has no self-esteem Thinks he s cooler than everyone Pushes little kids around Insecure and bitter so treats other badly/wrongly Is a coward/picks on people for no reason Has to be violent to make someone like him/her Cyber-bullying Excludes someone Is immature Gossips Doesn t fit in

9 Grades 7 and 8: Picks on other people to make themselves feel good Physically hurts someone or insults them Takes advantage of someone who is weaker than them Makes you feel as if you aren t good and shoots you down Spreads gossip Likes to ruin someone else s life Ignoring someone Can lead to very sad or angry people They are mean, shallow, and disrespectful

10 Written Survey Results Here are the results by grade level to the question When I see someone being bullied, I can The most common responses are listed

14 Grades 7 and 8: Try to stop the person Defend the person being bullied Get an adult who will make them stop the situation Stick up for the victim Tell the bully what they are doing is wrong Change the conversation

15 Drawing Survey Results The final part of our survey was to ask grades PK-6 to draw a picture of what it looks like to feel safe at school

16 Here are the results of our drawings This is for PK and K: This group can express themselves through drawings--- they could not fully express themselves in written form but they are great with pictures. Many pictures involved the sun, friends holding hands, people smiling, playing together, one even had a person with a thought above their head which contained a heart for Love

17 Drawings 1 st and 2 nd grade: Friends together, sunshine, saying Hi to each other and sharing their names, holding hands, church pictures with a Heart as the door knobs, friends on the playground, on swings together, one even drew two students together and one was crying and the other one asks Are you okay?

18 Drawings 3 rd and 4 th grade: Many pictures involved smiles and children playing together, sunshine, girls with arms out and a cross above her head, playing on the floor together in class.

19 Drawings for 5 th and 6 th grade: Many used people smiling, playing on swings; laughing together, playing outside together, many students drew a classroom with signs posted saying Bully Free Zone and Bully Free School, another drew a student with thumbs up saying All students here are safe.

20 Summary of School Survey PK and K did the best in showing their opinions through pictures and proving that everything is always better when the sun shines. 1st through 6 th grade gave their ideas on bullying through verbal abuse--- one of the more common affects of bullying. 7 th and 8 th grade gave more solid answers as if they have been bullied at one time and they knew what it feels like to be the victim.

23 The Many Forms of Bullying Verbal abuse- Calling people unkind names Cyber-Bullying Physical-willful injuring of a person Indirect-gossiping Social Alienation- being excluded from a group Intimidation-threatening someone to make them do something they know is wrong

24 What We Already Have to End Bullying We have certain things in place already at SGGCS to create a safe environment for all. We have materials to aid with Anti-bullying. Some materials include books from Scholastic on bullying, a K-3 pamphlet from Scholastic on Bully-Proofing your classroom, and a poster that reads This is a No-Bullying Zone and another one that reads In this Class We Treat Everyone With Respect and Kindness. We also have a Counseling Referral Form.

25 How We Used the Information After doing the research and surveying our student body of 225 students we developed a Safe Practices Program for our own school in the area of Anti- Bullying.

26 Our New School Safe Practices Program will include the following: Discussions on how to Spot a Bully: We will do role-playing (by grade level) featuring different bullying situations and how to react to them, and we will also present how bullying is different for girls and boys.

27 Our Safe Practices cont d We will involve the whole student body in our No Bullying School and Safe Practices Campaign We will offer a bracelet and written student pledges against bullying Create Design a Logo contest for the best T-shirt design Teachers will create an action plan for their specific classrooms Have students sign behavior contracts Implementing a buddy system Create student programs to help build self-esteem

28 More Safe-Practices We will place more information in the student handbooks on specific policies in place for bullying Create a school-wide reporting system Hold leadership classes Include the new bullying policies in the school s newsletter Have message boards around the school to remind students how to show respect and self-discipline Adopt a logo Make SGG a Safe Environment for all with SPP

29 Conclusion With the new policies that SGG will introduce, I hope that they will end most bullying inside the school. What happens out of school could end because everyday people will be reminded that bullying is wrong and it has very dangerous results for both the bully and the victim.
